Epiplatys esekanus is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the highland-to-lowland transition zone of southwestern Cameroon, collected from permanent freshwater brooks in the drainage corridors between the inland Cameroonian plateau and the coastal lowlands around the town of Eseka. Unlike the annual Nothobranchius and Fundulopanchax species that dominate the killifish hobby, this Epiplatys deposits adhesive eggs on plant material or spawning mops over an extended period and requires no peat-incubation phase — placing it in the plant-spawner guild that characterises the genus across West and Central Africa. Reaching roughly 2.5 in standard length, it is an upper-water-column, surface-oriented predator of small invertebrates and insects, a peaceful fish that challenges its keeper mainly through the sensitivity of its fry and its preference for slightly soft, acidic water.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys esekanus was originally described by J. J. Scheel in 1968, with the type locality recorded in the area around Eseka, a town in the Nyong River drainage of southwestern Cameroon. The species was initially placed in Aplocheilus, a pantropical killifish genus, before being transferred to Epiplatys — the assignment noted in the aquarium literature and reflected in the FishBase entry (FishBase ID 9827). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid name Epiplatys esekanus Scheel, 1968 within the family Nothobranchiidae, the African lampeyes and panchax killifishes.

The genus Epiplatys encompasses more than thirty described species distributed across West and Central Africa, all sharing the surface-oriented body plan, the upturned mouth, and the non-annual reproductive strategy that distinguish them from the better-known annual genera of the same family. Within Epiplatys the species belongs informally to the panchax group — a loose assemblage of mid- to large-sized Epiplatys species that tend toward moderate water preferences rather than the extreme blackwater or ephemeral-pool conditions associated with some relatives.

The American Killifish Association (AKA) database records at least seven collection localities for the species across the Cameroonian lowlands, including Eseka, M'Banga, Ndoupe, Boumnyebel, and Pout Kelle, and lists 25 entries in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) — a reflection of the species' modest but real presence in specialist killi circles over the decades.

Morphology

Epiplatys esekanus is a slender, torpedo-shaped killifish with the characteristic flat-topped, dorsoventrally compressed head and strongly upturned mouth that mark surface-feeding Epiplatys. FishBase records a maximum size of 2.5 in standard length (SL); aquarium sources note individuals reaching 2.5–3 in total length (TL), making this a mid-sized member of the genus. The body is elongated and laterally compressed behind the head, tapering to a relatively large, rounded caudal fin.

Colouration follows the general Epiplatys pattern of iridescent blues and greens on the flanks overlaid with a pattern of spots or blotches that varies between individuals and populations. Males in full colour display the richer iridescence and more vivid patterning typical of the genus; females are plainer and more olive or beige in overall tone, with reduced or absent metallic sheen. The upturned, subterminal mouth is suited to snatching prey from or just beneath the water surface.

Sexual dimorphism is present and follows the genus norm: males are more intensely coloured, often displaying extended or pointed unpaired fin tips, while females are noticeably plumper-bodied when gravid. The degree of colour intensity in males responds strongly to social context and condition, with well-fed, dominant males in a stable setup showing the most saturated hues.

Habitat

The species is confined to a geographically restricted area of southwestern Cameroon, occupying the drainage corridor between the inland plateau and the coastal lowland in the general vicinity of Eseka and the neighbouring localities recorded by the AKA database — Boumnyebel, M'Banga, Ndoupe, and Pout Kelle. This zone sits within the Congo Basin's northwestern periphery and the Upper Nyong River drainage system.

FishBase describes the habitat as permanent freshwater brooks — shallow, forest-shaded streams and small watercourses that persist year-round rather than drying seasonally, consistent with the species' non-annual life history. These are typically slow-moving to nearly still waters with a substrate of leaf litter, fine gravel, or sandy mud, shaded by riparian forest canopy that limits light penetration and contributes organic matter to the water column. Surface cover in the form of overhanging vegetation or floating debris is likely important both as foraging terrain and as cover from avian predators.

Water chemistry at the collection sites is mildly acidic and soft: aquarium sources record a working pH range of 6.0–6.5 and a general hardness of 3+ dH, reflecting the relatively low-mineral geology of the forested plateau-to-lowland transition. Temperature in the permanent hill brooks is moderated by shade and groundwater input; the recommended aquarium range of 72–79 °F likely approximates natural conditions across seasons.

Feeding

In the wild, Epiplatys esekanus is an opportunistic surface predator, taking small live invertebrates, flying insects that land on or near the water surface, and any appropriately sized aquatic prey within reach of its upturned mouth. The genus as a whole is associated with surface-layer prey capture, and the flat-topped head and dorsal eye position of E. esekanus reflect this foraging niche.

In the aquarium the fish accepts a variety of small live and frozen foods readily: daphnia, artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm, mosquito larvae, and small insects such as wingless fruit flies (Drosophila) are all taken enthusiastically. Surface-delivered foods are preferred — foods that sink slowly or must be chased to the bottom are less readily pursued. The diet should be varied to maintain condition and colour; a reliance on a single food type tends to degrade both. Dry foods can be accepted by established individuals but live and frozen fare should form the core of the diet.

Mating

Epiplatys esekanus is a non-annual plant-spawner, and its reproductive biology reflects the permanent-water environment from which it comes. There is no diapause phase, no peat burial, and no seasonally compressed life history — pairs or small groups spawn continuously over weeks and months rather than racing through an annual cycle tied to the rains. The mating system is broadly typical of the genus: a dominant male courts receptive females with lateral displays and quivering behaviour, driving subordinate males away from preferred spawning positions.

Spawning occurs near the water surface or close to the substrate among fine-leaved vegetation or the fibres of a spawning mop. The pair momentarily press together as eggs and sperm are released; each spawning act produces only a small number of eggs, but the process is repeated many times over an extended period, yielding a steady trickle of offspring rather than a single mass clutch. Eggs are adhesive and cling to plant material or mop fibres after release. Males are persistent in courtship and can stress or injure females if the ratio of males to females is skewed; a setup with one male to two females, or a sufficiently large and planted tank, reduces this risk.

Breeding

Breeding Epiplatys esekanus in captivity follows the standard Epiplatys protocol. A fine-leaved plant or synthetic spawning mop placed at or near the water surface provides the egg-deposition site. Eggs are collected by removing the mop every few days (or by separating the adults from the eggs and raising the eggs in situ in a dedicated container), then incubated in shallow water at 72–79 °F. Aquarium sources report an incubation period of approximately 14 days, after which the fry hatch as free-swimming, miniature versions of the adults.

Fry are described in the aquarium literature as very sensitive to water contamination — small containers must be managed with particular care, and partial water changes with aged, matched water are essential during the first weeks. The fry are large enough at hatching to accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms as first foods; they grow steadily provided water quality is maintained. Infusoria can be used in the first day or two if nauplii are not immediately available, but the fry are capable hunters from the start.

The breeding population across hobby circles has historically been small; the AKA database logs the species under multiple collection codes corresponding to the known wild localities, and serious keepers try to maintain strains traceable to specific collection points to preserve genetic diversity. Adults are comparatively long-lived for a killifish, reflecting the permanent-water habitat.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys esekanus is a peaceful species suited to a quiet, well-planted killifish setup or a carefully chosen community of small West African fishes. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in length is ample for a breeding pair or trio; taller tanks with abundant surface cover — floating plants, overhanging vegetation — replicate the shaded stream habitats the species comes from and encourage bold behaviour. The fish are upper-water-column dwellers and spend most of their time near the surface, so depth is less important than surface area and cover.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic: pH 6.0–6.5, hardness around 3 dH, and temperature in the 72–79 °F range. These are undemanding parameters relative to some blackwater killies, but the species is not a fish for hard, alkaline tap water without appropriate conditioning. Regular partial water changes with aged water maintain the stable, low-waste conditions the fry especially require. A tight-fitting cover is essential, as with virtually all killifish — the combination of a strong jumping reflex and a surface-hugging lifestyle makes escape attempts a real risk.

FishBase notes that the species can be difficult to maintain in the aquarium, a reputation probably traceable to fry sensitivity and the need for appropriately soft, clean water rather than any aggression or feeding problem in the adults themselves. For a specialist killifish keeper, these requirements are routine; for a general community aquarist unfamiliar with softwater management, they represent a real challenge. The species is most rewarding in the hands of an experienced killifish keeper who can source well-provenanced stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys esekanus as Least Concern in February 2009, a finding authored by Moelants, Snoeks, Laleye, and Contreras-MacBeath and published in 2010 (IUCN taxon ID 169439, assessment ID 6627627). The assessment rationale noted the species' restricted geographic range around Eseka in southwestern Cameroon but found no evidence of widespread threats or population decline sufficient to warrant a threatened category at the time of assessment.

The restricted range is nonetheless a genuine conservation consideration. The permanent forest brooks that E. esekanus occupies in the plateau-to-lowland transition zone of the Nyong drainage are vulnerable to the deforestation and agricultural encroachment that have degraded large areas of lowland forest in Cameroon over recent decades. Loss of riparian canopy changes water temperature, sedimentation, and the organic-matter regime of these small watercourses in ways that can eliminate specialist stream-dwelling fishes even when the stream itself persists. There is also the general risk of introduction of Nile tilapia and mosquitofish to permanent freshwater bodies in the region — both are documented threats to native killifish in West and Central Africa.

The species has never been widespread in the killifish hobby, and the degree to which captive stocks represent wild genetic diversity is uncertain. A reassessment of its IUCN status using current survey data from its known localities would be a valuable step toward understanding whether the Least Concern assessment remains accurate given the rate of land-use change in southwestern Cameroon since 2009.
