Taxonomy & naming
Epiplatys grahami was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1911, with the type locality recorded as a swampy area near Lagos, southwestern Nigeria. Boulenger placed the new species in Haplochilus at the time of description; the current generic assignment to Epiplatys — established within the family Nothobranchiidae — follows Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which lists the valid combination as Epiplatys grahami (Boulenger, 1911). The authority is parenthesised because the species has been moved from its original genus.
Within Epiplatys the species falls in the subgenus Epiplatys and is placed in the 'singa' species group by killifish systematists. The genus Epiplatys is the most speciose group of panchax-type killies in West and Central Africa, characterised by a distinctly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, a laterally compressed body, and in most species a banded or spotted colour pattern along the flanks. Graham's panchax was first brought into captivity in 1905, making it one of the earliest West African killies to reach European aquarists, though it has never achieved the widespread popularity of the brighter members of its genus.
Morphology
Graham's panchax is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase). The body profile is streamlined and torpedo-like, widest at the shoulder and tapering cleanly to a rounded caudal fin — a shape well suited to ambushing prey at or just below the surface film. The mouth is strongly upturned, pointing almost vertically upward in relaxed posture, an adaptation shared across Epiplatys for intercepting insects and other surface-drifting food.
Colouration is relatively subdued compared with some congeners: the flanks are a warm olive-brown or greenish-tan, typically marked with a series of darker vertical bars or spots along the midline, most distinct in males in breeding condition. The dorsal and caudal fins of ripe males may carry a pale edging. The most immediately striking feature noted by hobbyists is the eyes, which are a brilliant, glassy green — conspicuously iridescent in good light and a useful identification character. Sexual dimorphism is mild: males are more brightly coloured and slightly more slender; females are plainer with a fuller, more rounded belly when gravid.
Habitat
Graham's panchax occupies swamps and the swampy margins of small, slow-flowing streams within coastal lowland forest from southeastern Benin through southern Nigeria (including the Lagos and Niger Delta areas, Epé, Badagri, and Gamui) and on through Cameroon (records include Kribi in the southwest and Muyuka) to northwestern Equatorial Guinea. This is the Guinea–Congolian forest belt, where low-gradient watercourses and seasonal inundation zones create shallow, heavily vegetated, often densely shaded environments with soft, slightly acidic water.
The American Killifish Association records breeding aquarium conditions of around 70–73 °F and pH 6.8 with very soft water (DH 2), reflecting the naturally soft, buffering-poor rainforest run-off typical of its native range. FishBase gives a broader field temperature range of 73–82 °F. The species is benthopelagic and non-migratory, spending most of its time in the upper water column close to the surface, particularly under overhanging vegetation or floating debris where insect prey concentrates.
Feeding
Like all Epiplatys, Graham's panchax is a surface and near-surface predator, exploiting the food-rich interface between water and air. In the wild, the strongly upturned mouth is used to intercept insects that land on or fall into the water — small flies, mosquito larvae, emerging aquatic insects, and similar invertebrates make up the bulk of the diet. The species is also capable of seizing prey just below the surface film.
In captivity it adapts readily to prepared and frozen foods without difficulty. Live or frozen Drosophila, bloodworm, brine shrimp, Tubifex, and mosquito larvae are all eagerly accepted and provide a good nutritional base. Floating micro-pellets of appropriate size are taken once the fish associates them with food. Offering a varied diet with a strong emphasis on invertebrate-based foods keeps the fish in best condition and encourages males to display their finest colouration.
Mating
Graham's panchax is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the annual species of the Nothobranchius or South American Austrolebias type, it does not bury eggs in substrate for a diapause period — its home waters are permanent or near-permanent, and its reproductive strategy is entirely adapted to that permanence. Males in condition are visibly more slender and more intensely coloured than females and engage in lateral display, spread-fin posturing, and gentle pursuit to court receptive females.
Pairing occurs close to the water surface or among fine vegetation. The male positions himself alongside the female and the two curve together briefly as a small number of eggs are deposited at each spawning embrace. Eggs are adhesive and are pressed onto fine-leaved plants, roots, moss, or — in aquarium settings — the fibres of a floating spawning mop. Spawning is intermittent and spread over days or weeks, with a few eggs produced at each contact, rather than a single mass-release event.
Breeding
Eggs are small and adhesive, pressed individually onto spawning mops, fine plants, or floating roots and left to incubate in water with no further parental involvement. The American Killifish Association records an incubation period of approximately 14 days at aquarium temperatures in the 70–73 °F range. There is no diapause and no requirement for a peat or dry-storage phase — eggs simply develop in water at a steady rate, which makes the species far easier to raise than the annual killifishes.
Fry are proportionally small on hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial fry powder in the first days, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Growth is relatively fast; the AKA notes that fish reach sexual maturity at around 5–6 months. For best production, mops should be checked regularly and eggs or mop segments with eggs moved to a separate raising container to protect the eggs from adults and to track development. A top-floating mop is reported to be preferred over a bottom-positioned one.
In the aquarium
Graham's panchax is an undemanding and rewarding killifish for the specialist, though it lacks the gaudy colour of some West African panchax and is less commonly traded than the showiest members of the genus. A species tank of 15 US gal or more is sufficient for a small group, furnished with floating plants (Ceratopteris, Salvinia) or fine-leaved stems to break the surface and provide cover. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory — all Epiplatys are excellent jumpers and will clear a gap of a few millimetres without hesitation.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.2), warm (72–79 °F), and well filtered but not turbulent — the species prefers calm, dark conditions. Multiple males can be kept together in a sufficiently large and furnished space, though persistent harassment of a single female should prompt rearranging the sex ratio. Because it is a peaceful fish of modest size, it can be combined with other small, similarly tempered West African species (dwarf tetras, small barbs) provided tankmates are not so small as to be viewed as food. It is one of the longer-lived small killies; well-kept individuals reach several years in captivity.
Killifish clubs and the American Killifish Association are the most reliable source of stock; wild-type populations from specific collection localities (Lagos, Benin, Kribi, Equatorial Guinea) are maintained by specialist breeders and represent the best genetic material for serious hobbyists. The first introduction to aquarists dates to 1905, giving the species one of the longest captive histories of any West African killi.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys grahami as Least Concern in June 2019 (published 2020), assessed by Lalèyè, Moelants, and Olaosebikan. The assessment reflects a species with a comparatively broad distribution across several West African countries and no evidence of a rapid range-wide population decline at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the coastal lowland forest zone it inhabits is one of the most heavily deforested and fragmented biomes in Africa. The Guinea–Congolian forest belt of southern Nigeria, Benin, and Cameroon has experienced severe habitat loss from agricultural expansion, urban growth around Lagos and other coastal cities, oil-palm and rubber plantation development, and drainage of swampy lowlands. Small streams and swamp margins — precisely the habitat on which Graham's panchax depends — are among the most vulnerable water bodies to sedimentation, pollution from agricultural and domestic run-off, and outright conversion. While the Least Concern listing is the current formal assessment, ongoing monitoring of lowland forest streams and swamps in southern Nigeria and Cameroon remains important, as localised populations in heavily impacted parts of the range are at heightened risk even where the species as a whole is not immediately threatened.
