Taxonomy & naming
Albert Günther described Epiplatys infrafasciatus in 1866, with the type locality recorded as Old Calabar — the historical trading post at the mouth of the Cross River in what is now southeastern Nigeria (approximately 08°20'E, 04°57'N). Günther's original placement has since been moved, hence the parenthetical authority (Günther, 1866). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Epiplatys infrafasciatus as a valid species within the genus Epiplatys, family Nothobranchiidae.
Epiplatys is a large genus of non-annual, surface-oriented African killifishes distributed across the lowland forest zones of West and Central Africa. The genus name combines the Greek epi (upon, at the surface) with platys (flat, broad), a reference to the flattened dorsal head profile and surface-feeding habit that characterise the group. The specific epithet infrafasciatus is Latin: infra (below, beneath) and fasciatus (banded, striped), together describing the distinctive dark cross-bands on the lower body that give the fish its common name of six-banded panchax.
Multiple collection codes are documented for this species by killifish societies, reflecting its broad coastal distribution and the attention collectors have paid to population-level variation. Populations from Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea differ in the intensity and number of flank bands, and some are reported to present greater difficulty in breeding than others, suggesting meaningful population-level divergence even within what is currently treated as a single species.
Morphology
Epiplatys infrafasciatus reaches a maximum of 3 in standard length, a figure consistent across both FishBase and the Killifish of West Africa reference library (citing Radda, 1979). The body is elongated and laterally compressed, with the flattened top-of-head and upturned mouth characteristic of surface-feeding Epiplatys. The dorsal fin is set far back, giving the fish a pike-like silhouette well adapted for a sudden upward strike at prey on or near the film.
Meristic counts from the WAK reference library are: dorsal rays 9–13, anal rays 14–19, and lateral-line scales 27–32. Ground colouration of wild-caught males is typically olive-green to golden-yellow on the flanks, shading to a cream or pale silver below. The most prominent feature is a series of dark, roughly vertical bands running across the lower flanks and belly — typically six in well-marked individuals, though the count and contrast vary between populations. Males display extended, pointed caudal and dorsal tips and stronger colour than females, particularly during courtship.
Females are plumper-bodied, more uniformly coloured, and lack the pointed fin extensions of mature males. The banding is usually present in both sexes but is less saturated in females. Juveniles are plain and the banding develops progressively as the fish approach sexual maturity at around five to six months of age.
Habitat
This species occupies coastal lowland freshwaters in the Gulf of Guinea drainage: from the eastern bank of the Cross River in southeastern Nigeria, across the coastal plains and rainforest streams of Cameroon, south to the Rio Benito watershed in northern Equatorial Guinea, and including Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea. The WAK reference library describes the preferred habitat as coastal rainforest streams, small brooks, and swampy margins — slow-moving or near-still water shaded by dense forest canopy, with abundant surface cover from overhanging vegetation, floating leaves, and emergent root tangles.
Water conditions across this coastal rainforest zone are warm and soft: FishBase records a thermal range of 72–79 °F for the species. The streams it inhabits are typically stained with tannins from decaying leaf litter, yielding mildly acidic to neutral conditions. The fish is found at or near the surface, tucked into patches of shade or beneath floating debris — a position from which it can intercept terrestrial invertebrates falling onto the water and small aquatic insects at the surface film.
Population data compiled by the American Killifish Association documents 42 distinct collection localities across Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, including sites such as Limbe (Mile 11) in southwestern Cameroon and populations on Bioko Island. The breadth of the documented locality list reflects both the species' range and the enthusiasm with which killifish hobbyists have collected and maintained geographically distinct strains.
Feeding
In the wild Epiplatys infrafasciatus is a surface and near-surface predator subsisting chiefly on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates: insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and any invertebrate small enough to be seized at or just below the water surface. The upturned jaw is adapted precisely for this feeding mode, allowing the fish to strike upward at prey touching the film without breaking through it dramatically.
In captivity the species is an eager and undemanding feeder. It accepts small live foods — Drosophila (flightless fruit flies) dropped onto the surface are particularly effective and mimic the natural prey-capture behaviour — along with frozen bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, Artemia, and small water fleas. Floating or slow-sinking micro-pellets are taken once the fish is settled, but live or frozen invertebrates should anchor the diet. The small gape means that food particle size matters: items should be sized to fit comfortably in the mouth of individual fish, and juveniles require appropriately fine foods such as microworms and baby brine shrimp nauplii.
Mating
Epiplatys infrafasciatus is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the peat-burying annual species of seasonally desiccating savannahs, it inhabits permanent or near-permanent forest streams and reproduces by a sustained plant-spawning strategy: pairs hang fine adhesive eggs on the leaves, roots, or filaments of aquatic plants, moss, or synthetic spawning mops over an extended period rather than in a single mass-release event. There is no diapause and no requirement for the eggs to be stored dry.
Males pursue females persistently once the sexes are introduced, displaying lateral colour and extended fin tips. Courtship is brief: the male positions himself alongside the female, the pair align flanks, and a small number of eggs — one to a few at a time — are deposited on fine-leaved plants or mop filaments near the surface or amid mid-water vegetation. This serial spawning continues daily over weeks, making collection of eggs an ongoing activity for breeders rather than a single harvest event. Males may be aggressive toward unreceptive females, so the tank should provide adequate cover and hiding places.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive, relatively large for the fish's body size, and incubate in water — no peat burial is needed or beneficial. At 75–77 °F, eggs of related Epiplatys species hatch in approximately 9–16 days; the WAK reference library cites a 10–16-day incubation range for E. infrafasciatus. Fry are free-swimming from hatching and are initially small but hardy by killifish standards. First foods are baby brine shrimp nauplii, microworms, or commercial fry powder; the young grow steadily and reach sexual maturity at around five to six months, with full size attained by twelve months.
The WAK source notes that some populations are more challenging to breed than others, and that western populations show sensitivity to water pollution, suggesting that water quality and the specific source population can both influence breeding success. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (reflecting the natural rainforest stream habitat) is recommended. Because the adults will readily consume their own eggs, spawning mops or live plants should be checked and eggs removed or the adults transferred daily. The broad geographic provenance of available strains means that maintaining population provenance and avoiding hybridisation between locality forms is considered important by serious killifish hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Epiplatys infrafasciatus is among the more accessible Epiplatys species for hobbyists new to killifish. A pair or small group of three to four fish (one male, two to three females) can be maintained comfortably in a well-planted tank of 10–15 US gal. The tank should be densely planted with fine-leaved plants — Java moss, hornwort, or guppy grass all work well — and the water surface kept partially covered with floating plants such as frogbit or riccia to provide the shaded surface zone the fish naturally occupies and to reduce any tendency to jump. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory: all Epiplatys are capable jumpers.
Water temperature of 72–79 °F with soft to moderately soft, neutral to mildly acidic water (reflecting the coastal rainforest stream conditions) suits the species well. Filtration should provide gentle flow — a simple sponge filter is ideal — as the species does not favour strong currents. The six-banded panchax is peaceable with similarly-sized, non-aggressive tankmates that occupy different water layers, but its surface territory should not be contested by boisterous or nippy species. Kept in a species or species-biased setup it makes an excellent display fish: males spar and display with raised fins and vivid banding, and the fish's surface-patrol behaviour is engaging to watch.
Given the 42-plus documented locality populations, killifish society members typically maintain strains true to their collection locality and label their stock accordingly. The American Killifish Association's JAKA journal has published at least 20 articles covering this species, reflecting its prominence within the specialist hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys infrafasciatus as Least Concern (LC) on 1 May 2009, with assessors Entsua-Mensah, Lalèyè, and Moelants concluding that no immediate conservation concerns exist and that the species' distribution across the coastal lowlands of Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea is stable. The assessment predates detailed pressure mapping for this stretch of the Gulf of Guinea coast and will benefit from reassessment as land-cover change data improve.
The coastal rainforest zone occupied by this species is subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and infrastructure development — pressures that are reshaping freshwater habitats across the Cameroon Highlands and Cross River–Rio Muni lowland corridor. Bioko Island populations face additional isolation owing to the island's geography, and the WAK reference notes that some western populations are sensitive to pollution, suggesting that water-quality degradation is a real local risk even if the species-level status is currently secure.
The species' broad distribution across 42-plus documented localities and three countries provides resilience at the species level, but locality-level populations may each represent ecologically and genetically distinct units. The killifish hobby plays a quiet but genuine conservation role here: specialist collectors document and maintain locality-true strains with a rigour rarely matched for freshwater fish of equivalent public profile, preserving population diversity that would otherwise go unrecorded.
