A small, surface-dwelling panchax from the upper and middle Sassandra River basin of western Ivory Coast, Epiplatys kassiapleuensis was described by Berkenkamp and Etzel in 1977 from a creek two kilometres west of Kassiaple in the Hochland von Man highlands. FishBase currently treats it as a junior synonym of the wide-ranging Epiplatys olbrechtsi Poll, 1941, placing it among five recognised subspecies of that taxon; Killi-Data Online and the American Killifish Association continue to list it as a distinct species in active hobbyist use. The fish inhabits permanent, soft, slightly acidic rainforest streams and is a non-annual plant-spawner — eggs are deposited on fine vegetation and surface roots rather than buried in substrate — making it straightforward to breed in captivity by killi standards.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis was formally described by Hans-Otto Berkenkamp and Volker Etzel in 1977, with the type locality given as a creek two kilometres west of Kassiaple in the Hochland von Man region of western Ivory Coast. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the species as valid under this original authorship, assigned to the family Nothobranchiidae and the genus Epiplatys.

FishBase treats E. kassiapleuensis as a junior synonym of Epiplatys olbrechtsi Poll, 1941, subsuming it as one of five recognised subspecies. Killi-Data Online — the specialist master database for the order Cyprinodontiformes — and the American Killifish Association list it as a distinct species, and it remains in hobbyist literature and collection records under the kassiapleuensis name. The taxonomy is therefore contested at the species versus subspecies level; hobbyists working with locality-coded material consistently use the 1977 name. Catalog of Fishes is the site's governing authority, and the original combination is treated as provisionally valid pending formal revision of the olbrechtsi complex.

The genus Epiplatys is one of the largest killifish genera, comprising approximately 53 recognised species (Killifische.info) spread across West and Central Africa and divided by Killi-Data Online into seven subgenera. E. kassiapleuensis is classified within Epiplatys sensu stricto or a closely related subgenus. The genus belongs to the panchax clade — surface-oriented, elongate killifishes characterised by a posteriorly placed dorsal fin and a strongly upturned mouth adapted for taking prey at the water surface.

Morphology

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis is a slender, slightly laterally compressed killifish with the characteristic silhouette of the panchax group: a long, torpedo-shaped body, a dorsally flattened head, and a mouth that angles sharply upward, an adaptation for snatching insects from the water surface. The American Killifish Association gives a maximum size of approximately 2 in; FishBase records 3 in TL for the broader olbrechtsi complex, suggesting some specimens may exceed the hobbyist-cited figure.

Colouration in males is typical of the West African Epiplatys assemblage: an olive to brownish-green base on the dorsal surface fading to pale gold or cream on the flanks and belly, with a series of irregular dark vertical bars or spots on the sides that break up and fade with age. The fins carry coloured edges — males in breeding condition show orange, red, or blue-green iridescence in the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. Females are plainer, lacking the fin colouration and lateral iridescence of the males, with a more uniformly olive-brown body. The pointed caudal fin of males may develop extended rays in mature individuals.

Habitat

The species' documented range centres on the middle and upper Sassandra River basin in western Ivory Coast, with collection localities recorded at Kassiapleu, Douekoue, and Siwa (American Killifish Association). The Sassandra drains the Hochland von Man highlands and flows southwestward to the Gulf of Guinea, passing through a mosaic of rainforest, transitional forest, and gallery woodland. The creek habitats where E. kassiapleuensis occurs are typically shallow, slow-moving, and shaded by overhanging vegetation — conditions that create the soft, slightly acidic water chemistry recorded for the species.

FishBase records the species as a permanent-water (non-seasonal) inhabitant, benthopelagic in habit, occupying the water column from the surface to midwater. Water chemistry values from FishBase give a temperature of 72 °F, pH 5.8, and hardness approaching zero — very soft, mildly acidic blackwater-adjacent conditions characteristic of rainforest stream habitats over laterite or sandy substrate. The American Killifish Association reports slightly warmer and less acidic water from field collections: 75 °F, pH 6.8, hardness 10 dGH, suggesting some local variation between highland creek sites and lower-gradient sections.

As a surface-oriented panchax the fish is concentrated in the upper water column, particularly near overhanging banks, floating vegetation, and root masses where terrestrial insects fall into the water. Epiplatys are strong jumpers and in the wild exploit the air-water interface actively.

Feeding

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis is primarily an insectivore in the wild, targeting small invertebrates at or near the water surface — terrestrial insects that have fallen into the water, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates. The American Killifish Association describes the diet as omnivorous, acknowledging occasional plant material, but animal prey dominates.

In the aquarium the species accepts a range of foods including frozen or freeze-dried bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, artemia, and small live foods such as fruit flies (Drosophila), whiteworm, and grindal worm. A varied diet of fine-particle, high-protein foods maintains colour and condition. The surface-feeding orientation should be accommodated — floating or slow-sinking foods are taken more readily than those settling to the bottom. Small pellets sized appropriately to the fish's mouth are also accepted by acclimatised specimens.

Mating

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent water bodies and does not undergo the egg diapause associated with seasonal, ephemeral-pool annuals. Reproduction is continuous rather than triggered by a single seasonal cue, and the pair bond is loose — successive spawning bouts occur over days or weeks rather than in a single event tied to the rainy season.

Courtship follows the standard panchax pattern. The male displays laterally to the female, spreading his fins to show their coloured margins and arching his body to exhibit the full iridescence of the flanks. Receptive females are shepherded to a spawning site near the surface — fine-leaved plants, floating plant roots, or a spawning mop — where a brief embrace deposits a small number of adhesive eggs. Because spawning is distributed over time and involves repeated visits to the plant or mop rather than a concentrated mass-release, egg numbers per session are low — a handful to a few dozen — but accumulate substantially over a sustained breeding period. Males may be mildly aggressive to females; a well-planted aquarium with visual breaks reduces harassment.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters on fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, or synthetic spawning mops near the water surface. They are adhesive, relatively large for the fish's body size, and incubate submerged in water — there is no diapause, no drying, and no peat-medium storage. At typical tank temperatures of 72–75 °F, eggs hatch in approximately 10–14 days, consistent with other non-annual West African Epiplatys. Newly hatched fry are free-swimming almost immediately and large enough to take baby brine shrimp nauplii and microworm from the outset.

The simplest breeding approach is to use a pair or trio (one male, two females) in a species tank of 10 US gal, well planted with fine-leaved aquatics such as Ceratopteris or Java moss, with a floating spawning mop added at the surface. Eggs should be checked every few days and removed to a separate hatching container to prevent predation by the adults. Fry growth is steady on a diet of nauplii, microworm, and small live or frozen foods; they reach sexual maturity in three to four months. Water temperature of 72–75 °F and pH in the 6.0–7.0 range cover the conditions from both field-collection sources.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis is well suited to the specialist killifish hobbyist and to anyone maintaining a West African biotope aquarium. A species or small-group tank of 10–15 US gal is appropriate; the fish are active at the surface and need length rather than depth. The aquarium must be tightly covered — panchax are excellent jumpers and will exploit any gap in the lid.

A soft, slightly acidic water chemistry replicating the Sassandra highland streams is ideal: temperature 72–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and soft water (5–10 dGH). Filtration should produce very gentle flow, as these are stream-edge fish unaccustomed to strong current. Floating vegetation and fine-leaved plants create the natural shaded conditions the fish prefer and provide surfaces for egg deposition. Tannin-staining from dried leaves or driftwood is beneficial, darkening the water and lowering pH slightly.

The fish are not aggressive toward non-competing tankmates of similar size and water requirement, but surface-dwelling companions may trigger competition for food. The most practical arrangement is a species tank, which also simplifies breeding management. Epiplatys kassiapleuensis appears in the specialist killifish trade under its Berkenkamp and Etzel name and at AKA species listings; it is occasionally available from killi clubs and breeders focusing on West African panchax.

Conservation

Epiplatys kassiapleuensis has not been independently assessed by the IUCN Red List; under the synonymy applied by FishBase, the relevant assessment is that of Epiplatys olbrechtsi, which was evaluated as Least Concern in 2009. That assessment reflects the broader olbrechtsi complex across Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire, not the kassiapleuensis form specifically. The collection localities for this taxon — Kassiapleu, Douekoue, and Siwa — are all in the upper Sassandra basin of western Ivory Coast, a region that has experienced substantial forest loss over recent decades through logging, agricultural encroachment, and small-scale gold mining.

The highland streams of the Hochland von Man are not designated protected areas and are subject to the same pressures affecting West African rainforest rivers broadly: deforestation-driven siltation, reduced riparian shading that raises water temperature, and direct disturbance of stream channels. Non-native mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) introduced for malaria control in West Africa prey on killifish eggs and fry in some localities, though their documented range in the Sassandra headwaters is not confirmed. The specialist killi hobby maintains ex-situ populations of E. kassiapleuensis from known collection codes (Kassiapleu, Douekoue, Siwa) that serve as an informal genetic reserve for this form.
