Epiplatys mesogramma is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the Ubangi River drainage of the southwestern Central African Republic, where it inhabits the quiet, shaded margins of forest streams and gallery-woodland brooks flowing beneath dense riparian canopy. A plant spawner rather than a soil-burying annual, it scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation and lives for several years — a life history that sets it apart from the annual peat-spawning killies of the savanna floor and makes it a patient, low-key resident of permanent or near-permanent water. With a maximum size around 2–2.5 in, subdued but intricately patterned coloration, and demanding care requirements, it is a species for the specialist hobbyist rather than the general fishkeeper.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys mesogramma was described by Joerg-Volker Huber in 1980, with the type locality given as a small stream along the Mbaiki–Mongoumba road south of Bangui, at approximately 3°55′N, 18°10′E, in the southwestern Central African Republic. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan), is Epiplatys mesogramma Huber, 1980. Epiplatys is a large West and Central African genus of non-annual panchax killies currently containing several dozen valid species; its classification has been periodically revised as molecular and morphological data accumulate.

A phylogeographic study by Collier et al. (2009) resolved the genus Epiplatys into two broad clades: a western clade associated with savanna and forest-edge drainages west of the Congo basin, and an eastern or forest-interior clade. E. mesogramma falls within the western–savanna clade, grouping it with species found across lowland Central and West African gallery-forest stream systems rather than with the deep-forest panchax assemblages of the Congo interior.

The specific epithet mesogramma derives from the Greek mesos ('middle') and gramma ('line, mark'), likely referring to a mid-lateral stripe or body marking. The genus name Epiplatys combines the Greek epi ('upon, above') and platys ('broad, flat'), describing the flattened dorsal profile typical of surface-oriented predators in the family Nothobranchiidae.

Morphology

Epiplatys mesogramma is a slender, slightly dorsoventrally compressed killifish typical of the panchax body plan: a long, relatively cylindrical trunk, a dorsally placed dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle, and an upturned mouth adapted for feeding at or near the water surface. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in, while Seriously Fish gives 2 in standard length, with males the larger sex. The species is small even by killifish standards.

Colouration follows the cryptic-to-subdued pattern common in forest-stream Epiplatys: an olive-green to brownish base on the dorsal surface, paler on the flanks, with a series of faint dark blotches or a mid-lateral stripe that presumably gives the species its name. Males are more vividly marked than females and carry extended, coloured fin margins — the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins showing some degree of spotting or banding in breeding condition. Females are plainer, with rounder body profiles when gravid. Sexual dimorphism in this genus is generally moderate but consistent: male finnage and colour intensity provide reliable sex determination in healthy adults.

Habitat

The species is an endemic of the Ubangi River drainage (also written Ubangui), an important tributary of the Congo system draining parts of the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Congo. The known range is specifically the southwestern corner of the Central African Republic, centred on streams and brooks in the region between Mbaiki and Mongoumba. FishBase describes the habitat as the margins between bank vegetation and open water in streams, brooks, and small rivers flowing through gallery forest — shallow, heavily shaded, slow-to-moderate current environments where surface cover is provided by overhanging vegetation, submerged roots, and accumulated leaf litter.

The water in gallery-forest streams of this region is typically soft and slightly acidic, tinted lightly by dissolved organic material but not deeply coloured in the way of pure blackwater systems. Seriously Fish records the aquarium-appropriate parameters as pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard, with temperatures of 72–79 °F. FishBase gives a slightly cooler range of 68–75 °F, consistent with the shaded, canopy-covered microhabitat where direct sunlight rarely warms the water surface. The habitat is classified as permanent freshwater, non-migratory — confirming the non-annual life history.

Low light intensity, dense marginal and surface vegetation, and abundant invertebrate prey in the leaf litter and water column characterise the microhabitat. Unlike many annual killifish whose temporary-pool habitats are open, sun-baked, and seasonally desiccated, E. mesogramma occupies comparatively stable hydrological conditions linked to perennial stream flow fed by the forest catchment.

Feeding

Epiplatys mesogramma is a predatory surface and water-column feeder, as is characteristic of the genus. In the wild it targets small invertebrates, insect larvae and adults (particularly those falling or hatching at the water surface), zooplankton, and other small prey in the shallow, surface-rich microhabitat it occupies.

In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Artemia nauplii, adult Artemia, Daphnia, Moina, grindal worms, micro-worms, and similar items are all reported as suitable. Seriously Fish notes that it can be weaned onto dried foods, though it may be slow to accept these. Given its small size and surface-oriented feeding posture, foods that float or suspend near the surface are most effective. Overfeeding in a small or stagnant system is a risk; clean, well-oxygenated water is important for maintaining appetite and health.

Mating

As a non-annual plant-spawning killifish, Epiplatys mesogramma reproduces in a fundamentally different way from the annual peat-burying species with which killies are most commonly associated in the hobby. There is no diapause, no drying of eggs in substrate, and no seasonal dormancy phase. Instead, pairs and small groups spawn over extended periods by depositing adhesive eggs individually or in small batches on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, plant roots, or floating spawning mops — the panchax pattern of persistent, low-level egg deposition rather than mass synchronised spawning.

Males are territorial and may pursue females vigorously. In a group setting, dominant males can harass subordinate males and females if space is insufficient. Unlike bubble-nesting gouramis or mouthbrooding cichlids, there is no nest-building or parental attendance of the spawning site: once eggs are deposited they are ignored by the parents and will be eaten by adults if not removed. The mating ritual involves lateral displays by the male — fanning fins, intensifying colour — followed by a brief side-by-side spawning embrace during which one or more eggs are fertilised.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited singly or in small numbers on plant leaves, roots, or synthetic mop fibres over days or weeks. They are relatively large for the size of the fish and can be picked out individually and transferred to a separate incubation container — a shallow tray or small tank with gentle filtration and a small amount of antifungal agent (methylene blue at low concentration) to reduce fungal losses.

Incubation takes place in water at ambient temperature, with no air-incubation or diapause period required. At temperatures around 75 °F, hatching can be expected in approximately 10–14 days, though this varies with temperature and the specific population. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, commercial fry powder, or vinegar eels are suitable starters before graduating to Artemia nauplii once the fry are large enough. Growth is moderate and the fry are sensitive to water quality in the early weeks. Raising fry separately from adults is essential, as adults will consume any fry they encounter.

FishBase notes that E. mesogramma is considered difficult to maintain in the aquarium, which implies that successful breeding requires close attention to water quality and food provision. The non-annual plant-spawning life cycle means that a healthy pair can produce offspring continuously over many months given good conditions, unlike annual species that are bred in a single seasonal event.

In the aquarium

FishBase flags Epiplatys mesogramma as difficult to maintain — a notable caution given that many Epiplatys species are manageable for intermediate killifish keepers. The difficulty likely relates to its preference for stable, clean, shaded, soft-water conditions that replicate the gallery-forest stream environment, and its sensitivity to fluctuating water quality in smaller tanks. Seriously Fish recommends heavily planted tanks with driftwood and leaf litter, subdued lighting, and soft to moderately hard water at pH 6.0–7.5 and 72–79 °F.

The tank should be tightly covered: like all killies, E. mesogramma is an accomplished jumper and will escape through any open gap. A species-only setup or a small community of similarly sized, non-competitive fish from the same region is preferable to a mixed community. A group of one male and two or three females in a well-planted tank of 15 US gal or more allows natural behavioural expression and ongoing low-density spawning on plants or mops.

This is not a species for the novice killifish keeper. It is most rewarding for hobbyists with experience of West or Central African panchax species, who can commit to stable water chemistry, live or frozen invertebrate foods, and the careful egg-picking and fry-rearing that plant-spawning killies require. Its rarity in the trade — a direct function of its narrow endemic range and specialised habitat — means that acquiring it typically involves sourcing from killifish societies or specialist breeders rather than retail shops.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys mesogramma as Least Concern in 2009 (Ref. 130435 via FishBase), based on the then-available information about its range and habitat within the Ubangi River drainage. The species is endemic to a geographically restricted area of the southwestern Central African Republic — a small country that has experienced significant political instability, land-use change, and forest degradation over the decades since the assessment.

The gallery-forest streams that constitute the known habitat of E. mesogramma are subject to pressures common to lowland Central African watersheds: forest clearance for agriculture and charcoal production, stream siltation from deforestation of catchments, and localised water extraction. Because the species appears to be endemic to a narrow geographic region centred on a few drainages near Bangui, any significant degradation of gallery-forest stream habitat in that area could have disproportionate consequences for its population.

The 2009 LC assessment is now over fifteen years old, and the conservation status of a narrow endemic from a politically and ecologically stressed region warrants re-evaluation with updated field survey data. The species has a very limited presence in the international killifish hobby, which constrains ex-situ assurance capacity. Until a more recent assessment is available, the LC status should be read as reflecting the situation as understood in 2009 rather than as a current statement of security.
