Epiplatys neumanni was described by the British Museum ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906, based on material collected from Central Africa. The authority is given in parentheses — (Boulenger, 1906) — indicating that the species has been transferred from the genus in which Boulenger originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the current combination Epiplatys neumanni (Boulenger, 1906) as the valid name.
The genus Epiplatys Gill, 1862 belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African egg-laying toothcarps, and encompasses a diverse assemblage of surface-oriented panchax killifishes distributed across West and Central Africa. The name Epiplatys derives from the Greek epi (upon, above) and platys (flat, broad), referring to the flattened upper jaw and the characteristically upturned mouth these fishes use to intercept prey at the water surface. Within Epiplatys, neumanni is placed in the broad 'panchax' species-group used by hobbyists and researchers to distinguish these non-annual, plant-spawning members of the genus from the annual or semi-annual members of the wider family.
The species epithet neumanni honours a collector — most likely the German zoologist Oscar Neumann (1867–1946), whose African collecting expeditions contributed significant material to European museums in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, though the specific collection associated with this description is not detailed in accessible records.
Morphology
Epiplatys neumanni reaches a maximum total length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase), making it a small to medium panchax by genus standards. The body form is typical of the surface-dwelling Epiplatys: elongated and laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, with a strongly flattened dorsal profile, a distinctly upturned mouth, and large eyes positioned high on the head — all adaptations for hunting prey at or just below the water surface.

Habitat
Epiplatys neumanni is a forest killifish of the Central African rainforest belt. Its documented range spans the upper Dja drainage of southern Cameroon, the Ntem River system along the Cameroon–Gabon border, the Ivindo River in northeastern Gabon, and the northern tributaries of the middle Ogooué River — placing it squarely within the Congo Basin's western margin and the adjacent coastal Atlantic drainages of Cameroon and Gabon. The Republic of the Congo is also included in the native range.
Within this region, the species inhabits small bodies of water and creeks under continuous rainforest canopy — shaded, leaf-littered streams and pools where light penetration is low, water temperatures are relatively stable and cool, and the substrate is soft with accumulated leaf litter and organic detritus. These habitats are typically soft and acidic, with low conductivity, reflecting the nature of water draining laterite and clay soils through dense forest — though precise pH and hardness records for Epiplatys neumanni collection sites specifically are not widely published in accessible sources.
Unlike the ephemeral pools inhabited by annual killifishes of the same rainforest zone, the creeks and forest pools occupied by Epiplatys neumanni persist year-round, or at minimum through extended dry periods, supporting a non-annual life history strategy.
Feeding
Epiplatys neumanni is a surface and near-surface predator with a strongly upturned mouth adapted for taking invertebrates at the water film. In the wild, the diet consists primarily of small aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, and other small invertebrates that fall onto or move near the surface of shaded forest pools and streams — a resource that is patchy and unpredictable in the still-water forest environments it inhabits.
In the aquarium, live and frozen foods of appropriate size are strongly preferred. Small live Drosophila (fruit flies), mosquito larvae, small Artemia (brine shrimp), and finely chopped bloodworm are accepted and support good condition and colour. Dry foods are often refused or taken reluctantly, particularly in newly imported wild-caught fish. Feeding from the surface is strongly preferred — food items that sink rapidly may be ignored. The small maximum size means prey items must be appropriately scaled; oversize foods are refused.
Mating
Epiplatys neumanni is a non-annual killifish that reproduces by the plant-spawning method characteristic of the genus Epiplatys and of the broader surface-oriented panchax group. Pairs or small groups court at the water surface or among emergent and submerged vegetation, with the male displaying his fin coloration and pursuing the female in an elongated, swimming courtship. No bubble nest is constructed.
Spawning is a continual, low-intensity process rather than a single mass-release event: the pair align side by side among fine-leaved plants, roots, or spawning mops and deposit individual or small batches of adhesive eggs on the substrate surface over an extended period of days or weeks. Eggs are small, spherical, slightly adhesive, and clear to slightly amber-tinted. The number of eggs produced per day is low relative to annual killies — typically a few eggs per day from a conditioned pair — reflecting the species' adaptation to stable, long-lived environments where rapid batch reproduction is not the selective strategy.
Breeding
Because Epiplatys neumanni is a plant-spawner, eggs require no diapause or dry incubation — they develop continuously in water at ambient temperature and hatch after an incubation period of approximately 10–14 days, though precise figures depend on temperature. The larvae emerge small but free-swimming and must be fed immediately with infusoria, commercial micro-fry foods, or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii; the yolk sac is consumed very quickly.
In hobbyist practice, breeding is most reliably achieved in a dedicated species tank densely planted with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or floating plants) or set up with wool spawning mops, allowing eggs to be collected and transferred to a separate hatching vessel. Regular small water changes with soft, slightly acidic water similar to the forest-creek habitat encourage continuous spawning activity. Because the adults will consume eggs and newly hatched fry given the opportunity, removing eggs daily or separating the breeding pair after spawning is standard practice. FishBase categorises Epiplatys neumanni as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a significant caution that likely reflects its origins in stable, soft, shaded forest water and its sensitivity to water quality fluctuations, elevated temperatures, and the stress of shipping. It is not a species for the general fishkeeper and is best approached by hobbyists already experienced with delicate West African killifishes.
Housing should replicate the cool, shaded, soft-water forest-creek environment as closely as practical: a small, well-covered tank (the tight lid is critical for this surface-skimming species) with subdued lighting, dark substrate, leaf litter, dense fine-leaved planting, and gentle, low-turnover filtration. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, with temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius or below — elevated temperatures above 79–81 °F are likely stressful for a fish adapted to shaded forest streams. The American Killifish Association documents 48 collection localities across the native range; where strain provenance is known, maintaining locality-pure strains is considered good practice in the killi hobby to preserve genetic integrity.
Compatible tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and suited to the same soft-acid water — small West African tetras or similar forest-floor fishes. Epiplatys neumanni is itself not aggressive to fish too large to eat, but its surface orientation and delicacy mean it is best kept in a species or near-species setup. It is rarely encountered in the retail trade and is mainly kept by specialist killi hobbyists.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment by Moelants (2010) places Epiplatys neumanni in the Least Concern (LC) category, assessed in 2009. The relatively wide documented distribution across Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo — encompassing 48 known collection localities — underpins this assessment; the species is not considered to face immediate extinction risk at the level of its overall range.
Nonetheless, all three countries in the native range face significant and accelerating pressure on lowland forest and forest-floor water habitats through logging, mining concession expansion, agricultural conversion, and road development across the Congo Basin periphery. Epiplatys neumanni is a specialist of small, shaded, permanent forest creeks; habitat that is dependent on intact closed-canopy rainforest above it. Canopy removal changes water temperature, sedimentation, and the allochthonous invertebrate input that drives forest-pool food webs, and can permanently alter or destroy the microhabitat conditions these fish require. Introduced predators (Nile tilapia, mosquitofish) and collecting pressure for the killi hobby add additional localised threats to individual populations, though these are not at present considered to threaten the species range-wide.
The LC status reflects current range-wide abundance rather than habitat security. Given the rate of forest loss across its range, continued monitoring of the Dja, Ntem, Ivindo, and Ogooué basin populations is warranted.
