Taxonomy & naming
Epiplatys sangmelinensis was described by Ernst Ahl in 1928 from specimens taken at Sangmelima (then written 'Sangmelina' in the original), a town in the Dja et Lobo department of southern Cameroon on the upper Lobo River. Ahl placed the species in the genus Epiplatys, where it remains under the current treatment in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong). The authority is presented in parentheses because Ahl's original placement has been retained but the nomenclatural context has shifted; the full citation is Epiplatys sangmelinensis (Ahl, 1928).
Epiplatys belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae (African killifishes) and comprises the panchax-group rivulines of West and Central Africa — non-annual, surface-oriented fishes of forest streams and swamp margins. The genus name derives from Greek epi- ('upon', 'above') combined with platys ('flat' or 'broad'), a reference to the dorsal profile of the head, which in these surface hunters is flattened to facilitate ambush feeding just below the water's surface. The specific epithet sangmelinensis is a toponym: a Latinised adjective meaning 'of Sangmelima', directly commemorating the type locality. No recognised subspecies or populations have been formally described, though hobbyist collections from the Ivindo basin in northern Gabon extend the known range to the south.
Morphology
Like other members of Epiplatys, E. sangmelinensis is a slender, laterally compressed fish with a distinctly flat or slightly concave dorsal head profile — an adaptation for surface feeding and predation. FishBase records a maximum total length of approximately 3 in, with standard length around 2.5 in; most adults in captivity are somewhat smaller. The body is elongate and the caudal fin rounded to slightly pointed, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back on the body and positioned opposite each other — a configuration characteristic of the panchax group.
Colouration is typical of the genus: the flanks carry a series of transverse dark bars or spots arranged in longitudinal rows, overlaid on a warm greenish-gold to olive background with iridescent scale flecks. Males are more intensely coloured, especially in the throat and ventral region, which may show reddish or orange tones during courtship. Females are drabber, with less contrast in the barring pattern and a rounder, deeper belly when gravid. The fins of males may show colour extension and marginal spotting. Compared with some of the more dramatically patterned Epiplatys of West Africa, E. sangmelinensis is considered a quietly attractive rather than a showy species.
Habitat
The native range of Epiplatys sangmelinensis spans the forests of southern Cameroon and northern Gabon. The type locality — the upper Lobo River near Sangmelima — lies in a region of dense equatorial gallery forest and secondary bush; killifische.info places additional collection points roughly 1640 ft north of Kaningali, between Zienzu and Suakoko in that basin. The species also occurs in the Ivindo basin of northern Gabon, one of the major tributaries of the Ogooué system. It inhabits swamps, small forest brooks, and slow to standing water under dense forest canopy — the characteristically darkened, soft, acidic conditions produced by leaf litter accumulation and limited sunlight penetration.
FishBase records the temperature range as 68–75 °F, pH 6.0–6.5, and hardness up to approximately 10 dH, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic water typical of Central African rainforest streams. These are permanent or near-permanent water bodies rather than seasonal pools — a distinction that defines the species' non-annual life history. The dense surface vegetation and submerged roots and leaf litter of its natural habitat provide both spawning substrate and cover from aerial predators, and these structural features should be replicated in captivity.
Feeding
In the wild, Epiplatys sangmelinensis feeds as a surface and near-surface predator, exploiting the interface zone between water and air that is its natural hunting ground. The dorsally flattened head and upward-angled mouth are classic adaptations for this feeding mode: the fish stations itself just below the surface and takes small invertebrates — terrestrial insects that have fallen onto the water, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton — with a short, upward strike. Like other panchax-group killifishes, it is primarily a carnivore on live prey.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: fruit flies (Drosophila), small crickets, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), Daphnia, copepods, and small mosquito larvae are all suitable. High-quality micro-pellets designed for small carnivorous fishes may be accepted once the fish is established. Feeding at the surface or just below it is strongly preferred; sinking foods may be ignored. Varied diet supports long-term health, and protein-rich live foods are particularly effective in conditioning a pair for breeding.
Mating
Epiplatys sangmelinensis is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Unlike the seasonal annual killifishes that bury eggs in substrate to survive dry-season desiccation, this species inhabits permanent water and deposits adhesive eggs individually or in small clusters on fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, or spawning mops placed near the surface. Spawning occurs over days or weeks rather than in a brief explosive event, and eggs are laid a few at a time rather than en masse — a pattern suited to a stable, year-round forest environment where selection favours sustained reproductive output rather than a single synchronised effort tied to seasonal flooding.
Courting males display laterally to females, spreading the dorsal and anal fins and intensifying their body colouration. Pairing is loose and repeated; a single male may court several females in a colony setting. The adhesive eggs are placed on plant leaves or fibres near the water surface, where they are concealed among vegetation.
Breeding
Eggs of Epiplatys sangmelinensis are adhesive and relatively small; they develop fully submerged without any diapause or drying phase — the defining characteristic of non-annual killifish reproduction. Incubation in the water takes around two to three weeks depending on temperature, with warmer water accelerating development. Fry hatch as miniature versions of the adults and are free-swimming almost immediately, though they are very small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial fry powder initially, followed by freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow.
American Killifish Association records describe the species as notable for being somewhat more challenging in captivity than many Epiplatys, with particular sensitivity to water quality and chemistry. Maintaining the cool, soft, acidic conditions of the natural habitat is important for reliable reproduction. Spawning mops of dark Java moss or fine-leaved floating plants placed near the surface replicate natural spawning sites well; eggs should be picked carefully every few days and transferred to a separate container to avoid predation by the adults. Adult longevity is typical of non-annual Epiplatys — the fish can live several years under good conditions, substantially longer than annual killifish species.
In the aquarium
Epiplatys sangmelinensis is considered a specialist fish, noted even by killifish-focused sources as more demanding than typical aquarium fare. FishBase explicitly flags it as difficult to maintain. The essential requirements are cool, clean, soft, and slightly acidic water (68–75 °F, pH 6.0–6.5, hardness below 10 dH), and a heavily planted, dimly lit aquarium that simulates the shaded forest stream environment. Intense light, warm temperatures, and hard alkaline water are all inconsistent with the species' natural habitat and will degrade condition over time.
A small, species-only or conspecific setup is most appropriate — a tank of 10–15 US gal with a dark substrate, surface vegetation (floating plants, moss), and gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal) provides the conditions needed. Subdued light encourages natural behaviour and reduces stress. The species is not aggressive but males may compete in close quarters; a single pair or a small group with balanced sex ratio in adequate space works well. The tank must be tightly covered, as all killifishes are capable jumpers and a surface-hunting species is particularly likely to leap.
For the dedicated killifish hobbyist, E. sangmelinensis is a rewarding species from a biogeographically interesting part of the Central African forest zone — the upper Lobo and Ivindo systems remain relatively understudied and the fish's associations with that region give it a distinct appeal beyond its modest colour. It is not a fish for the casual community keeper, but in the right hands and conditions it is an engaging and reproductively tractable species.
Conservation
Epiplatys sangmelinensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment conducted by Moelants in 2009 (published 2010). The LC status reflects the species' occurrence across a modest but contiguous range in southern Cameroon and northern Gabon, regions that retain large expanses of intact equatorial forest within and adjacent to the Dja Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the Lopé National Park.
Nevertheless, the forests of the Congo basin periphery face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, selective logging, and road development, all of which alter the hydrology and chemistry of small forest streams and swamp margins. Epiplatys sangmelinensis, as an obligate forest-stream species dependent on cool, soft, shaded water, would be sensitive to the warming, silting, and pH shifts that follow canopy removal. Oil palm expansion and associated drainage modification in Cameroon and Gabon represent medium-term threats to this habitat type across the wider region. The species does not appear on CITES appendices, and no targeted conservation measures specific to it are documented, but the preservation of intact gallery forest within its range is the key conservation lever. Its relatively restricted range means that large-scale deforestation in southern Cameroon or northern Gabon could alter its LC status in future assessments.
