Taxonomy & naming
Epiplatys spilargyreius was described by Auguste Henri André Duméril in 1861, placing it among the earliest described panchax killifishes from West Africa. Because the name has been moved from its original genus since publication, the authority appears in parentheses in its current form: (Duméril, 1861). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Epiplatys spilargyreius as the valid combination, placing it in the genus Epiplatys within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes — which diverged from the South American annual-killifish lineages long before the opening of the Atlantic.
The species acquired a synonym that hobbyists encountered in older literature: Epiplatys senegalensis, described by Steindachner in 1870, was for many years applied to specimens from Senegal and Ghana before being collapsed into E. spilargyreius. British Killifish Association correspondence from 1970 documents the shift, noting that stock entering European collections from Ghana in 1969 had been labelled under the Steindachner name. The current name is accepted under both FishBase and the IUCN Red List.
Epiplatys belongs to the panchax group of Nothobranchiidae, a cluster of non-annual West and Central African killifishes characterised by a surface-oriented lifestyle, oblique body markings, and plant- or mop-based spawning rather than the diapausing egg burial used by the seasonal annual killifishes. Within the genus the species is noted for its unusually extensive range — most Epiplatys have narrow, forest-stream distributions — and for the bold oblique banding (12–14 dark stripes on the flanks) that makes it one of the more visually striking members of the group.
Morphology
E. spilargyreius is a slender, pike-shaped killifish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 2 in, with some historical references citing 2.5 in as an upper bound for large individuals (FishBase). The body is laterally compressed and the mouth strongly upturned — a surface-feeding adaptation shared across the panchax assemblage. The dorsal fin is set well back, with 8–9 soft rays, positioned above or behind the anal fin origin to create the characteristic silhouette of an ambush predator hanging just below the surface film.
The flank pattern is the species' most distinctive feature: 12–14 bold, oblique dark stripes run diagonally across a background that varies from olive-gold to yellowish-silver depending on light and mood, giving the fish a dynamic, almost herringbone appearance. The iridescent quality of the flanks is captured in the specific epithet — the scales catch light at different angles, producing flashes of silver against the darker stripe pigment. Males tend to be slightly smaller than females and may develop intensified colouration and a more defined pattern during breeding condition, though the dimorphism is subtler than in many killifishes.
Habitat
The species occupies a remarkable breadth of West and Central African hydrological systems. Its confirmed range (AKA species account) spans 45 documented collection localities across Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Sudan, Sudan, and Togo. Major drainages represented include the Niger, Volta, Senegal-Gambia, Comoé, Benue, Logone-Chari, and Lake Chad systems in West and Central Africa, with isolated subpopulations recorded in the Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool) reach of the Congo and its Luala River tributary, in the Ubangui River (Central Congo drainage), and in the Baro River system of western Ethiopia.
Within these drainages E. spilargyreius consistently favours quiet, heavily vegetated water: swampy margins, seasonal marshes and pools, small brooks and streams with slow current, and the backwaters and floodplain pools of larger rivers. The IUCN assessment confirms use of permanent rivers and streams, seasonal and intermittent watercourses, and bogs, marshes, and swamps — essentially any warm, still or sluggish freshwater with cover. The species is benthopelagic but surface-oriented; it lurks near the water surface and under floating vegetation, taking insects that land on or near the film. FishBase records a preferred temperature range of 75–86 °F across its range, consistent with the warm tropical and Sahelian climates it inhabits.
Despite spanning savannah, forest-edge, and gallery-forest habitats across a continent-wide arc, the fish's consistent preference for surface cover and still to slow water defines its microhabitat wherever it occurs. It is not found in fast-flowing rocky streams or clear, open water.
Feeding
E. spilargyreius is a surface and near-surface predator whose wild diet centres on small terrestrial and aquatic insects. FishBase and the IUCN assessment document a diet of culicid larvae (mosquito larvae and pupae) and small beetles as core prey, alongside browsing of algae and higher plant material — the latter likely ingested incidentally during surface feeding rather than actively sought. The mosquito-larva component reflects the shared ecology of a fish that hunts in warm, stagnant, well-vegetated water bodies where culicids breed in abundance.
In captivity, the British Killifish Association's husbandry notes from 1970 emphasise that wild-caught and F1 specimens strongly prefer live food; dry and prepared diets are frequently ignored outright. Gnat larvae (bloodworms, Daphnia, and Cyclops) are described as favoured items. This preference for small, live, moving prey is consistent with the surface-ambush foraging mode and with the predator's apparent reliance on movement cues to trigger the strike response. Conditioning to frozen or freeze-dried alternatives is possible but demands patience, and food refusal is one of the documented reasons the species is rated as difficult to maintain in the aquarium.
Mating
Epiplatys spilargyreius is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish: it lives in permanent or near-permanent water and does not undergo the diapause cycle of seasonal, soil-burying annual killifishes. Courtship and pairing are characteristic of the panchax spawning mode — a male displays alongside a ripe female, intensifying body colour and extending fins before the pair move together toward floating vegetation, surface roots, or a spawning mop positioned at or near the water surface. The male curves his body around the female during the spawning act.
The eggs produced are adhesive and small, deposited individually or in small batches onto fine-leaved plant fronds, roots, or the fibres of a spawning mop over days or weeks rather than in a single mass-spawning event. This drawn-out, trickle-spawning strategy — common to surface-oriented non-annual Epiplatys — distributes risk across time and substrate. There is no bubble nest and no excavation of a spawning pit; the eggs simply adhere to whatever soft fibrous surface the pair select near the surface. BKA husbandry notes document successful spawning in both floating mops and peat-based substrates, though mops are the more consistent trigger in captivity.
Breeding
Eggs incubate in water with no diapause period. The BKA pamphlet records an incubation period of approximately 11 days at 72 °F — a useful benchmark, though at the warmer temperatures (75–82 °F) preferred in the wild, development is likely faster. Eggs and fry can be left with the parents or removed for separate hatching; BKA hobbyists found that parental care produced acceptable results and that removal was not essential, though separate hatching avoids predation risk.
The fry are notably delicate. BKA experience documents that even a transfer between identical water conditions can trigger significant fry mortality, and the recommendation is to leave young fish undisturbed for at least the first three months of life. Fry food should be appropriately sized: infusoria or very fine commercial fry preparations for the first week, graduating to small nauplii (Artemia or Cyclops) as the fish grow. Males do not reach full colouration or reliable sexing until around five months of age; growth through the first two months is relatively fast but slows thereafter. A soft, slightly acid water (pH around 6.6, hardness 4–10 DH°) is recommended for rearing, consistent with the preference for clean, aged water described for adult maintenance.
In the aquarium
E. spilargyreius is commercially collected for the aquarium trade (both national and international markets, per the IUCN assessment), but it is rated as a challenging species and is notably less commonly kept than popular West African killifishes such as Fundulopanchax gardneri. FishBase characterises it as very difficult to maintain — an assessment echoed in British Killifish Association records. The core challenges are food acceptance (strong preference for live food), fry fragility, and sensitivity to water quality.
Optimal conditions call for aged, soft, slightly acid water — pH around 6.6, hardness in the lower range (4–10 German degrees), temperature 72–75 °F as a stable aquarium range, though the fish tolerates a wider span in the wild. Surface cover in the form of floating plants or a spawning mop is essential: this is a top-dwelling fish that is shy and easily stressed without overhead cover. Lighting should be gentle. Tankmates should be small and non-competitive; the species does best in a dedicated killifish setup or a quiet species tank. Pairs or small groups work well, with one male per tank to avoid male-male conflict.
Hobbyists who have successfully acclimatised specimens — particularly those who have sourced F2 or captive-bred stock already adapted to aquarium conditions — describe E. spilargyreius as one of the most elegant members of its genus, combining the bold oblique-stripe pattern with the relaxed, near-surface hovering posture typical of a healthy panchax. Its 45-locality collector footprint across Africa means that occasional imports appear from different populations, though no distinct locality strains have been formally designated in the killifish hobby in the same way as many Fundulopanchax or Aphyosemion.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys spilargyreius as Least Concern in October 2019 (published 2020, version 2025-2; taxon ID 182262, assessment ID 134758359), with the justification that the species has a wide distribution and faces no known major widespread threats. The assessment team included African ichthyologists Diouf, Entsua-Mensah, Getahun, Lalèyè, and Moelants, reflecting the genuinely pan-continental scope of the species' range. A previous LC assessment in 2010 returned the same status.
The breadth of the range — 19 countries, 45 documented localities, and representation in seven or more major river systems from Senegal to Ethiopia — provides a meaningful buffer against localised threats. Unlike single-basin endemics in the Epiplatys genus, which can be rendered critically threatened by the drainage or degradation of a single wetland, E. spilargyreius has redundancy across drainages. Collection for the aquarium trade is noted as a commercial activity but is not flagged as a conservation concern at current levels.
That said, the species' preference for quiet, vegetated, marginal water makes it vulnerable to the specific pressures that affect exactly those microhabitats across sub-Saharan Africa: drainage of swamps and seasonal pools for agriculture, clearance of gallery-forest riparian vegetation, the spread of introduced predators (including Nile tilapia and, in some areas, Gambusia), and water abstraction in semi-arid Sahelian portions of its range. The isolated subpopulations in Pool Malebo and the Luala River are particularly worth monitoring, as they sit within the broader Congo basin, where deforestation and artisanal fishing pressure are increasing. No conservation actions specific to this species are currently in place, nor are any considered necessary given the current assessment.
