Epiplatys togolensis is a slender, surface-oriented killifish native to coastal West Africa, found across the river systems of Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria from the Mono and Zio rivers east through the Niger Delta and Cross River drainages. A non-annual species at home in the quiet, shaded margins of small forest rivers and seasonal brooks, it belongs to the largest genus of African killifishes and has attracted a modest but dedicated following among killifish hobbyists drawn to its clean colouration and its comparatively long lifespan relative to the better-known annual species. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2019, the species nevertheless faces real localised threats from oil-spill contamination across roughly a fifth of its range in the Niger Delta.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys togolensis was described by Paul V. Loiselle in 1971. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Epiplatys togolensis Loiselle, 1971, placing it within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African rivulines — which contains all the egg-laying killifishes endemic to mainland Africa and Madagascar. The Nothobranchiidae, though long treated as part of a broadly defined Aplocheilidae, are now consistently ranked as a distinct family in modern molecular phylogenies.

Within Nothobranchiidae, Epiplatys is the largest and most ecologically diverse African genus. The genus spans non-annual, plant-spawning lineages distributed from Senegal to the Congo basin and into East Africa. Epiplatys togolensis belongs to the broad 'panchax' grouping of surface-dwelling epiplatines, a grade defined more by ecology and body plan than by strict monophyletic circumscription. The species epithet togolensis is a Latinised toponym referring to Togo, the country from which type material was collected. FishBase assigns it catalogue ID 53777.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in for Epiplatys togolensis, though the majority of individuals in the hobby are kept and bred at 2–3 in. The body plan is typical of the surface-oriented epiplatines: elongated and slender, with a slightly compressed profile, a strongly upturned mouth adapted for seizing prey at the water film, and a dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle. The dorsal and anal fins are roughly mirror-image in shape, a characteristic of the family.

Colouration in males is the primary means of identification and attraction: the flanks carry a series of vertical bars or spots — often deep red-brown to orange on a pale olive or golden background — and the unpaired fins are marked with vivid colour. Females are plainer, retaining the barred or spotted pattern in subdued form without the intense fin pigmentation of breeding males. As with other epiplatines, the dorsal surface is flattened, giving the fish a characteristically pike-like silhouette when viewed from above, a shape well suited to ambush predation at the water surface.

Habitat

The IUCN assessment and FishBase both record Epiplatys togolensis from small rivers, quiet backwaters of larger rivers, and brooks within coastal rainforest across southern Togo, southern Benin, southeastern Ghana, and southern Nigeria including the Niger Delta region. Drainage systems documented include the Mono, Zio, and Hedjo rivers in Togo and Benin, and various coastal and inland systems draining toward the Bight of Benin and the Gulf of Guinea.

The species occupies both permanent rivers and streams and seasonal or intermittent watercourses — the IUCN habitat classification includes both categories — which helps explain its relatively broad distribution along the West African coastal lowland. Like most epiplatines, it is associated with shaded, vegetated margins, shallow water near banks, and areas of surface cover (overhanging vegetation, floating leaves, surface debris) that provide both shelter and ambush positions. Water in these forest-margin habitats is typically warm and slightly to moderately soft and acidic, though precise physicochemical data for the type locality are not recorded in the literature available for this species. FishBase gives a tropical temperature range of 72–82 °F.

Feeding

Like most Epiplatys species, E. togolensis is a surface-oriented micro-predator. The strongly upturned, protruding lower jaw is a morphological signature of a fish that captures insects, small arthropods, and other invertebrates at the water surface or in the upper water column. In coastal West African forest streams the diet would encompass terrestrial and aquatic insects, mosquito larvae and pupae, small crustaceans, and similar invertebrate prey that concentrate at the surface film.

In the aquarium the species feeds readily on suitably sized live and frozen invertebrates — Drosophila, mosquito larvae, small bloodworm, and Artemia — and most individuals eventually accept high-quality floating micro-pellets or dried foods. Because the mouth is upturned and the fish habitually hunts at the surface, food presentation at the water surface or just below it is more effective than bottom-sinking foods.

Mating

Epiplatys togolensis is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the annual species that inhabit ephemeral, seasonal pools and deposit diapausing eggs in substrate before the pools dry, E. togolensis lives in permanent or near-permanent water and reproduces by depositing small adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, root tangles, or floating plant matter over an extended period. There is no diapause, no obligate dry period, and no requirement for peat burial — a critical biological distinction from the annual killies with which the genus is sometimes superficially grouped by beginners.

Males are territorially aggressive toward rival males and display persistently toward females. Spawning is a repeated act rather than a single seasonal event: a conditioned pair will spawn continuously across weeks and months, depositing a few eggs per day when kept in good condition. Males display by extending the fins, intensifying body colour, and orienting laterally alongside the female before a brief spawning embrace near the surface or substrate.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Epiplatys togolensis follows the standard protocol for non-annual plant-spawning killifishes. Pairs or small trios are conditioned on live or frozen invertebrates and placed in a well-planted or mop-equipped aquarium of modest size (10–15 US gal is sufficient). Spawning mops — hanks of dark nylon wool or Java moss anchored near the surface or allowed to float — are the preferred egg-collection medium. The adhesive eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters and can be removed by hand or by transferring the mop to a separate rearing vessel.

Eggs incubate in water at approximately 75–79 °F and hatch in around 10–14 days, yielding comparatively large fry that are capable of taking Artemia nauplii or micro-worm from the first day of free swimming. Because the parents are non-annual and comparatively long-lived, a well-managed breeding colony can produce eggs continuously across many months. The species is rated as suitable for killifish beginners within the broader AKA community, which has documented it in 23 journal articles across the decades of organised killifish keeping.

In the aquarium

Epiplatys togolensis is an undemanding and rewarding species for the specialist killifish keeper. A single pair or small species group can be maintained in an aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal, provided the tank is well-planted, tightly covered (the fish jump readily), and maintained at 72–79 °F with stable, clean water. A dark substrate and background, along with floating plants such as Indian fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides) or water sprite, reproduces the dappled, shaded quality of its native forest-stream habitat and shows the male's colouration to best advantage.

The American Killifish Association has maintained documented records of this species across 39 collection or location pages and 23 historical breeding and husbandry articles in its journal, indicating a sustained hobbyist interest in the species over many decades. It is traded internationally in the ornamental fish trade, a fact noted in its IUCN assessment. As with all epiplatines, males are intolerant of each other in small tanks; keeping a single male with one or two females avoids the persistent fin-nipping that can result from competition. The species is not suitable for a general community aquarium — its small size and surface orientation make it vulnerable to larger tankmates, and any fish small enough to be eaten will be.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys togolensis as Least Concern (ver 3.1) in June 2019, published 2020. Assessors Philippe Lalèyè and M. Entsua-Mensah noted that while threats exist — notably oil-spill contamination across the Niger Delta portion of the range, which accounts for roughly one fifth of the species' total area of occupancy — these are not considered sufficient to qualify the species as threatened under the current evidence base. The assessment justification explicitly states that 'threats, especially in Niger Delta (~1/5 of species range), are serious but not thought to qualify this species as threatened.'

The IUCN also identifies invasive aquatic weeds as a secondary threat, and notes that the species' habitat — small forest rivers and coastal-lowland brooks — remains subject to the broader pressures of deforestation and agricultural conversion that affect coastal West Africa's remaining lowland rainforest belt. Population trend is listed as unknown. The assessment recommends habitat restoration as a conservation action. The trade in this species for the aquarium hobby is considered a use rather than a significant threat, and its documented presence in international ornamental trade over several decades indicates stable breedable populations in captivity. Continued monitoring of Niger Delta populations — where oil spills have repeatedly affected freshwater biodiversity — remains warranted given the localised severity of that threat.
