Fundulopanchax filamentosus, the plumed lyretail, is a West African killifish native to coastal rainforest streams and swamps from Togo and Benin east to the Niger Delta in southern Nigeria. Males develop spectacular dorsal and caudal fin filaments only at full maturity, making this one of the more visually dramatic small fish in the family. A semi-annual species that tolerates both substrate incubation and mop spawning in captivity, it occupies a middle ground between the strict annual soil-spawners and the continuous plant-spawners of the African killifish world — a flexibility that, alongside its relatively soft-water tolerance, has made it a steady if specialised presence in the killifish hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax filamentosus was described by the German ichthyologist Hermann Meinken in 1933. Meinken's type locality was given as the mouth of the River Niger, though, as the American Killifish Association notes, the exact collection site was not precisely documented. The authority is written in parentheses because the species has been moved from its original genus placement into Fundulopanchax, the large West African killifish genus erected for the so-called lampeye-allied toothcarps of the coastal rainforest belt. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Fundulopanchax filamentosus (Meinken, 1933).

Within Fundulopanchax, filamentosus belongs to the broadly defined 'filamentosus group' of mid-sized, sexually dimorphic species whose older males develop elongated fin rays — the feature that gives both the species and the group their Latin name. The genus sits within the family Nothobranchiidae, the African killifishes, which is separated from the New World Rivulidae following modern molecular phylogenetic work. No subspecies are recognised under the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in for Fundulopanchax filamentosus, placing it firmly in the small to mid-sized range for the genus. The body form is typical of Fundulopanchax: laterally compressed, moderately elongated, with the dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle — a characteristic silhouette shared with most West African forest killies.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, though it is age-dependent. Both sexes are attractively coloured, but it is only the fully mature male that develops the characteristic elongated filaments on the upper caudal fin rays and the dorsal fin — the features referenced by the species name and the common name 'plumed lyretail'. Younger males resemble females in fin length and are distinguishable primarily by colour intensity. Females are less colourful, with rounded fins and a deeper body when gravid. Habitat

Fundulopanchax filamentosus is a coastal rainforest endemic. Its range extends from Togo and Benin westward into Nigeria, broadly following the West African humid forest zone, with the Niger Delta representing the eastern limit of its recorded distribution. FishBase describes the preferred microhabitat as swamps and the swampy portions of shallow forest brooks — still or barely flowing, heavily shaded water over soft substrate, typically with leaf litter and decaying plant matter.

The water chemistry of these forest habitats is characterised by low conductivity, moderate acidity, and dark tannin-staining. FishBase records water parameters of pH 6.5–7.2, hardness 0–10 dH, and temperature 70–73 °F, broadly consistent with the soft, slightly acidic forest water typical of lowland West African lowland rainforest streams. The killi.co.uk profile suggests the fish also tolerates a somewhat warmer range (up to 75–81 °F) in captivity. Hobby reports associate the species with the collection localities Ijebu Ode and Ikeja in southwest Nigeria and Ouidah in Benin, all of which lie within or close to the coastal forest belt.

Feeding

Like most members of its family, Fundulopanchax filamentosus is a carnivore in the wild, consuming the invertebrates available in its forest-stream microhabitat. FishBase lists worms, crustaceans, and insects as the principal prey items — all components of the invertebrate fauna of leaf-litter streams and swampy pools.

In the aquarium, the species is straightforward to feed. The British Killifish Association reports that it accepts all live foods and also takes freeze-dried bloodworm without difficulty. Live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Tubifex, and small waxworms are all appropriate and will maintain condition and colour. As with all small killies, a varied diet including live invertebrates supports optimum reproductive readiness and helps bring fish into spawning condition.

Mating

Fundulopanchax filamentosus is a semi-annual killifish. Unlike the strict annual soil-spawners of the Nothobranchius world, whose eggs require a prolonged dry-phase diapause in peat or soil, filamentosus occupies an intermediate position: its eggs tolerate extended substrate incubation in peat and can survive a degree of drying, but the species can equally be bred in water on spawning mops or over a peat layer without enforced drying. The British Killifish Association explicitly describes it as a semi-annual or non-annual killifish with this dual capability.

Males are polygamous and will spawn with multiple females. The male displays lateral colour intensification and extended fin presentation before approaching a female; spawning drives are characteristically killifish — the male presses alongside the female and eggs are deposited singly or in small batches into or near the substrate. Given the swamp and shallow-brook habitat in the wild, where seasonal fluctuations in water depth occur but a true annual dry season is not necessarily extreme, the semi-annual strategy is ecologically consistent with the species' native environment.

Breeding

In captivity, Fundulopanchax filamentosus is reported by the killi.co.uk profile as easy to breed and producing hardy fry, with three successful breeding records documented in the hobbyist literature. The preferred substrate for spawning is peat fibre or a peat layer on the tank bottom, though spawning mops placed at mid-water or near the substrate are also used and accepted.

FishBase rates Fundulopanchax filamentosus as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a caution that relates primarily to the water quality standards required rather than any unusual behavioural complexity. Like most West African forest killies, it demands clean, well-oxygenated, soft and slightly acidic water in the pH 6.5–7.2 range, at temperatures of 70–73 °F, with low conductivity and the absence of pollutants. Elevated nitrate, stale water, or elevated temperature are the chief killers, and the species does not forgive the water-quality lapses that more robust aquarium fish tolerate.

A small, species-specific or genus-specific setup is the standard approach: a 10–20 US gal tank with gentle filtration (a small sponge filter is ideal), a dark substrate, and floating or fine-leaved plants to provide cover and spawning opportunities. The species is peaceful and should not be kept with boisterous or large tankmates. Males can be competitive with one another; the recommended ratio is one male to two or more females. Because the species is short-lived relative to most aquarium fish — a natural consequence of its semi-annual ecology — aquarists maintaining a colony should plan for regular replacements from their own spawning stock.

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax filamentosus as Least Concern (LC) in 2019, with the assessment conducted by Babatunde David Olaosebikan (Nigeria) and Philippe Lalèyè (Benin). The Least Concern status reflects the species' occurrence across multiple coastal rainforest localities in Togo, Benin, and Nigeria rather than extreme restriction to a single site — its range, while not broad in an absolute sense, spans multiple river drainages along the Gulf of Guinea coast.

Nonetheless, the broader context of West African coastal forest killies warrants attention. The coastal rainforest belt from Ghana to the Niger Delta is one of the most heavily deforested landscapes in sub-Saharan Africa, with ongoing conversion of forest to agriculture, oil palm plantations, and urban development directly affecting the swamps and shallow forest streams that filamentosus depends on. Drainage of wetlands, silting of forest streams, and pollution from agricultural run-off all represent ongoing threats to the forest-floor microhabitats this species requires. While the current LC assessment indicates no immediate extinction risk at the population level, the trajectory of habitat loss in West African coastal forests means continued monitoring is warranted. Aquarists maintaining viable captive colonies of locality-documented strains contribute in a modest but real way to the species' long-term security should wild populations come under increased pressure.
