Amiet's killifish is a brilliantly coloured, semi-annual killifish endemic to the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon, where it inhabits the swampy, stoneless shallows of forest streams flowing through lowland rainforest. Named in honour of the zoologist Jean-Louis Amiet of the University of Yaoundé, Fundulopanchax amieti sits within the subgenus Paraphyosemion and is closely related to Fp. puerzli, with which it is sometimes found in sympatry. It has earned a devoted following among killifish keepers for its extraordinary colouration and a reputation — compared with other Fundulopanchax — for relative tractability in the breeding tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax amieti was described by the Austrian killifish specialist Arthur C. Radda in 1976, based on material collected in 1974 from a forest stream on the road to Koupongo, approximately 500 metres west of Somakak in the Sanaga basin of Cameroon — this locality constitutes the type locality. The authority is presented in parentheses because Radda originally described the species in a different genus and it has since been transferred. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Fundulopanchax amieti (Radda, 1976).

Within Fundulopanchax, the species is assigned to the subgenus Paraphyosemion and falls within the ndianus species group — an assemblage of medium-sized, forest-dwelling West and Central African killies characterised by elaborate male fin development and muted but intricately patterned female colouration. Its closest associates in the habitat include Fp. puerzli and members of the genera Aphyosemion and Epiplatys.

The species is known in the hobby under a number of collection codes that designate specific wild-caught populations, most notably Somakak (the type locality), C 89/31 (collected on the Édéa–Yaoundé road), C 89/32, CMG 13/2, EMS 90/16, and HJRK 92/18. These codes carry husbandry significance because different collection lines can vary in colour intensity and behaviour, and serious keepers track lineage to maintain genetic integrity.

Morphology

Males of Fundulopanchax amieti reach approximately 2.5–3 in standard length and are among the more colourful representatives of the ndianus group. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, typical of the genus. Base colouration in males runs from a rich turquoise-blue to green-blue on the flanks, overlaid with rows of iridescent red-orange to brick-red spots and streaks that shimmer under raking light. The unpaired fins — dorsal, caudal, and anal — are elaborately patterned with combinations of orange, red, and blue, often edged with a contrasting pale or yellow margin. Some males develop extension of the dorsal and caudal fin rays.

Females are substantially more muted: the body is olive-brown to tan with reduced spotting, and the fins lack the vivid extension of the male. This pronounced sexual dichromatism is consistent across all known collection-point populations, though the precise intensity of male colouration varies between collection lines — the C 89/31 line in particular is noted for strong pigmentation.

Eggs are relatively large for the genus, measuring 0.5 in in diameter, and are deposited singly or in small clusters in bottom substrate or on fibrous mop material.

Habitat

In Cameroon's Sanaga basin, Fundulopanchax amieti occurs in swampy, low-gradient sections of forest brooks and shaded streams — specifically in deep, marshy areas with no stones on the bed and a layer of fine organic substrate, leaf litter, and accumulated peat over the bottom. These habitats receive filtered light through the canopy and are stained amber-brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids leaching from decaying plant material.

Water chemistry recorded at the Somakak type locality by Radda in 1974 reflects this environment precisely: air temperature 81 °F, water temperature 77 °F, pH 6.5, and total hardness of only 0.2 °dH — extremely soft water approaching distilled conditions. This is characteristic of West and Central African rainforest drainage, where the underlying geology contributes little dissolved mineral content and the water's chemistry is dominated by organic acids rather than carbonate hardness.

Sympatric species at these sites include Fp. puerzli, Aphyosemion riggenbachi, Aphyosemion franzwerneri, Epiplatys sexfasciatus, Alestes longipinnis, and Barbus guirali — a community typical of lowland Cameroonian forest streams.

Feeding

Like most Fundulopanchax, Fp. amieti is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, and small crustaceans from the water column and substrate. The soft-bottomed, tannin-stained forest streams it inhabits support a rich invertebrate fauna — chironomid larvae, copepods, small cladocerans, and terrestrial insects falling from the overhanging canopy — which forms the basis of its natural diet.

In captivity, the species responds well to a varied, protein-rich diet centred on live and frozen invertebrates. Bloodworms (chironomid larvae), daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae are all accepted eagerly, and the fish thrives on regular rotation through these foods. Dried and prepared foods are also taken by established fish, though live and frozen items should remain the dietary backbone. Good nutrition during the conditioning phase is important for maximising spawning output and egg quality.

Mating

Fundulopanchax amieti is a semi-annual killifish — a designation that places it between the strictly annual, diapausing soil-spawners (whose eggs require a mandatory dry-phase rest) and the fully non-annual plant-spawners (which breed continuously in water and have no dry tolerance). In nature, the water table in the forest habitats of the Sanaga basin can recede seasonally, and the eggs of Fp. amieti are adapted to tolerate a period of relatively damp, cooler incubation outside of standing water — but they are not dependent on it, and many breeders raise successful clutches by incubating entirely in water.

Males are highly competitive with one another and display intensely to females, erecting their fins and spreading their colouration to maximum effect. Because male aggression can be substantial in confined spaces, the recommended ratio in a breeding set-up is two or three females to each male, which distributes spawning attention and reduces the risk of a single female being harassed to exhaustion. Males begin attempting to spawn from as early as 14 weeks of age, though full colour and mature spawning behaviour develop more gradually — males typically reach four centimetres and full maturity at 8–9 months, while females mature somewhat sooner at around six months.

Breeding

Spawning occurs in the lower water column and at the bottom, with eggs deposited individually in fine substrate, fibrous mop material, peat, or a combination. Eggs are 0.5 in in diameter and relatively robust. Two incubation approaches are used successfully in the hobby. The first is water incubation: eggs are maintained in shallow, clean rainwater or very soft, slightly acidic water at lower temperatures (around 68–72 °F); hatching takes three to five weeks under these conditions, or somewhat longer — five to six weeks — in undisturbed rainwater. The second approach uses dry peat: eggs are transferred to slightly moist peat and stored at 64–70 °F for six to eight weeks, with some breeders reporting optimal yields with a minimum of 21 days in the damp-peat phase before wetting to trigger hatching. The semi-annual flexibility means both methods produce results, and many keepers alternate or combine them.

Fry are small on emergence but immediately take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, which should be offered from the first day. Growth is steady at warm temperatures. Brood stock remain productive for approximately 15 months, allowing extended breeding programmes from a single founding collection. Multiple females should be run with each male to maintain spawning momentum and avoid female burnout.

In the aquarium

Fundulopanchax amieti is considered one of the more accessible Fundulopanchax for hobbyists with some killifish experience, though it is not a first-choice beginner fish. FishBase notes that it can be difficult to maintain, and like all killies it requires careful attention to water quality, temperature stability, and diet. A small, well-planted species tank of 10–15 US gal suits a breeding trio comfortably. Floating plants and fine-leaved submerged vegetation provide cover, reduce ambient light to comfortable levels, and give females refuge from male attention.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic, matching the wild habitat as closely as practical: target values of pH 6.0–6.8 and hardness below 5 °dH, with temperature maintained at 72–79 °F. The aqua-fish.net profile gives a usable range of pH 5.8–7.2 and 72–82 °F for captive maintenance. A dark substrate reinforces natural behaviour, intensifies male colouration, and shows the fish to best effect. Gentle filtration via a sponge filter is preferable to strong flow. A tight-fitting lid is essential — killies are accomplished jumpers.

A permanent spawning mop of dark wool or Java moss resting on the tank bottom, or a thin layer of boiled peat, gives the fish continuous spawning opportunities. Eggs should be checked and removed every few days and incubated separately to prevent predation. The species is best kept in a dedicated killifish setup rather than a general community, both to protect eggs and because its water-chemistry requirements are more specific than most community fish tolerate.

Conservation

Fundulopanchax amieti has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and currently carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its known range is restricted to relict areas of the Sanaga River basin in Cameroon, and the American Killifish Association's reference material describes a distribution already characterised as patchy. The species is therefore a candidate for conservation concern, given that its specialised forest-stream habitat is under pressure from the deforestation and agricultural conversion that has reduced and fragmented Cameroonian lowland rainforest across the Sanaga catchment.

Lowland Cameroonian forest streams are vulnerable to sedimentation and warming when canopy is removed — conditions that directly degrade the soft, cool, tannin-rich water chemistry on which this species depends. There is no captive conservation programme formally coordinated for Fp. amieti, but the hobbyist killifish community — through organisations such as the American Killifish Association and European killifish groups — maintains multiple collection-coded lines in private fishrooms, representing an informal genetic repository for the species and its distinct wild populations. Continued documentation of collection localities and rigorous maintenance of population codes within the hobby remains the most practical near-term safeguard for this species' genetic diversity.
