Taxonomy & naming
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus was described by H. Clausen in 1963 as Aphyosemion cinnamomeum, from a type locality recorded as a small creek in rainforest approximately 44 miles north of Kumba in western Cameroon. The original description appeared in the Videnskabelige Meddeleser fra Dansk Naturhistorisk Forening, volume 125, pages 201–203. The authority is rendered in parentheses because the species has since been transferred from its original genus.
The American Killifish Association and FishBase place the species in the subgenus Paraphyosemion within Fundulopanchax, as part of the gardneri species group. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus (Clausen, 1963). The species is closely related to other Cameroonian members of the Paraphyosemion complex and co-occurs in some localities with Procatopus similis, another highland-stream specialist.
The specific epithet cinnamomeus is Latin for 'cinnamon-coloured', an apt name for the warm reddish-brown base colour that characterises males of this species. No subspecies are formally recognised, though multiple wild collection localities — Kumba, Baduma, Bétook, Kombone, Supé, Nguti, Mangua, Manyeman, Dikomé, M'boka, and Bolo Moboka among others — are documented in the hobbyist literature, and locality strains are maintained by specialist breeders.
Morphology
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is a slender, moderately elongate killifish. Males reach 2.5–3 in total length (approximately 2.5–3 inches); females are smaller, typically around 2 in. The body shape is characteristic of the Fundulopanchax group: a compressed, somewhat torpedo-like form with a superior mouth and an upturned snout — adaptations for surface-oriented feeding in still or slow-moving water.
Male colouration gives the species its common name. The body ground colour is a warm cinnamon-tan to reddish-brown, overlaid with a pattern of iridescent blue-green and red spots on the flanks that coalesce into irregular rows or a reticulate network depending on mood and individual variation. The dorsal and caudal fins display the species' most striking ornamentation: bands of red and blue with white or yellow edging. The anal fin mirrors the flank pattern. Females are considerably plainer — a pale olive-tan to yellowish body with faint spotting and transparent fins — the typical cryptic female form seen across the family.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are immediately distinguished from females by their vivid colour, larger finnage, and greater overall size. This strong dimorphism makes sexing straightforward from a young age, which is useful for the species-tank management that this fish requires.
Habitat
In the wild, Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus inhabits small brooks and streams in montane rainforest on the volcanic plateau between the Rumpi Hills and the Cameroon mountains in western Cameroon. The British Killifish Association places the type locality in a small creek in rainforest north of Kumba; the American Killifish Association notes the distribution extends between Manyemen and Mambanda, a span of roughly 6–34 mi, with the fish collected from sites including Kumba, Baduma, Bétook, Kombone, Supé, Nguti, and Mangua. The area receives over 49 in of annual rainfall, supporting a dense, largely undisturbed canopy over these small watercourses.
The streams sit on volcanic substrate and are characteristically soft and slightly acidic. FishBase records a pH of 5.8 and temperatures around 72 °F for collection sites, reflecting the elevated, shaded character of the habitat. The AKA Reference Library records a general hardness of 1.5 GH and pH 6.8 from water chemistry data by Scheel, indicating variability across collection sites. The water is typically cool for a West African lowland killi — the altitude moderates temperatures relative to coastal Cameroon.
The forest streams at the core of this species' range are perennial rather than seasonal: they do not dry completely, which is consistent with the species' non-annual reproductive biology. The understory canopy keeps the water shaded and prevents extreme temperature swings. This species swims in the lower half of the water column, a behaviour that aligns with its substrate-adjacent spawning strategy.
Feeding
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — insects and their larvae, crustaceans, worms — that fall or drift in the small forest streams it inhabits. As a killifish with a superior, upturned mouth it is well adapted to surface and near-surface feeding, taking prey items at the water film or in the water column below it.
In the aquarium the species accepts live, frozen, and prepared foods readily. Live or frozen daphnia, artemia, chironomid larvae (bloodworms), and small invertebrates are relished and support peak colour in males. Dried foods — small granules and micro-pellets — are accepted once the fish is established, though most keepers prioritise live and frozen items to maintain vitality and colour in breeding groups. The species is small enough that gut-loading is straightforward with standard aquarium invertebrate cultures. Overfeeding should be avoided; the small, soft-water streams of its native range are not nutrient-rich environments.
Mating
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is a semi-annual or switch spawner — what the British Killifish Association calls a 'switch spawner' — positioned between strictly annual peat-diapause species and obligate plant/mop spawners. In the permanent streams of its range, the water table does not disappear entirely, so eggs do not need to survive complete desiccation in the way that true annual killifish eggs must. Nevertheless, the eggs are adapted to tolerate periods of damp incubation out of water, and in captivity hobbyists exploit this flexibility to manage incubation either in water or in a semi-damp medium.
Male courtship is visual and active. Males display their cinnamon-and-blue colouration to females, adopting lateral postures that maximise the appearance of the flank pattern and the dorsal fin. Competition between males is significant; multiple males in close quarters lead to sustained chasing and fin damage. Most specialist breeders keep pairs or trios (one male, two females) to spread male attention and reduce stress on individual females. Females need periods of separation or dense planting to recover between spawning bouts.
Spawning occurs at all levels of the water column. The AKA Reference Library notes that eggs are deposited at all depths — in mops, in peat, and even casually between plants — and that eggs occasionally begin hatching in the parents' tank, indicating only moderate egg predation. Egg diameter is approximately 0.5 in.
Breeding
Spawning mops of dark wool and peat fibre placed at the base of the aquarium are the preferred collection medium for hobbyists, though eggs are found at all water levels. The British Killifish Association describes water incubation of 4–5 weeks as effective; the AKA Reference Library gives 3–4 weeks in water with extended incubation of 4 or more weeks as the stock matures. Alternatively, eggs can be stored in a semi-damp peat medium for 7–14 days after wetting before hatching is triggered — shorter than the multi-month diapause of true annual species. After dry storage, wetting the peat initiates hatching within a few days.
Sexual maturity is reached at approximately 2 months of age under aquarium conditions, with full size achieved at 4–5 months according to the AKA, while the British Killifish Association records maturity at 7–8 months — the difference likely reflecting rearing temperatures and feeding intensity. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial fry powder initially before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Water quality is critical in the fry tank: soft, slightly acidic water maintained scrupulously clean gives the best survival rates.
The species is temperature-sensitive: the British Killifish Association notes a susceptibility to velvet (Oodinium) and mycobacterial infections in soft acidic water at elevated temperatures. Keeping the aquarium at the cooler end of the tolerated range — 72–75 °F — reduces pathogen pressure and aligns with the cooler highland stream temperatures of the wild habitat.
In the aquarium
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is well suited to a small species aquarium. A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio; a slightly larger tank allows more mops to be run simultaneously and provides space for females to avoid persistent male attention. The tank should be tightly covered — killifish are notorious jumpers and any gap will be exploited. Dark substrate, floating plants, and spawning mops of dark wool create the shaded, leaf-litter-adjacent environment the fish prefers in the wild and encourage the males' most intense colouration.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the volcanic-soil highland streams of western Cameroon. The British Killifish Association records optimal parameters of DH 50–80 ppm (general hardness approximately 3–4 GH), pH 6.8–7.0, and temperature 75–81 °F (75–80 °F) in the aquarium; FishBase and field data indicate the lower end of this temperature range — around 72 °F — is also well tolerated and may reduce susceptibility to disease. The species swims predominantly in the lower half of the tank, spending time near the substrate and mops.
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is a rewarding species for the killifish specialist: the males are strikingly coloured, the breeding biology is manageble (requiring neither the strict diapause protocols of annual killies nor the free-spawning neglect of some non-annuals), and multiple wild locality strains are maintained by specialist societies including the American Killifish Association and the British Killifish Association, giving hobbyists the option to work with documented wild-collected lineages.
Conservation
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2009, authority Moelants 2010). The Endangered designation reflects the species' extremely restricted native range: the entire known distribution fits within a corridor of highland forest streams roughly 31 mi long in the upper Mungo drainage of western Cameroon, between the flanks of Mt. Rumpi and the Cameroon mountains. A species with such a small range and specialised habitat requirements is inherently vulnerable to localised habitat change.
The principal threats to the species are deforestation and forest degradation in the Cameroon highlands. The small streams it inhabits depend on intact forest canopy for shade, leaf-litter input, and water-retention in the catchment; clearing for agriculture — including palm oil and subsistence farming on the volcanic soils of the plateau — exposes streams to increased siltation, temperature swings, and altered flow regimes. The Mungo basin has experienced significant deforestation pressure over the past several decades, and many of the specific stream localities recorded for this species lie outside formally protected areas.
The captive population held by killifish societies provides a buffer against extinction in the short term. Multiple locality strains documented from the wild are maintained by specialist breeders affiliated with the AKA and BKA, and the species has been kept continuously in the hobby since its description. However, hobbyist populations cycle through keeper networks and are not a substitute for wild habitat protection. The long-term security of Fundulopanchax cinnamomeus depends on preserving the highland forest patches of western Cameroon that contain the streams of its Mungo watershed range.
