Fundulopanchax avichang was described by Malumbres and Castelo in 2001, with the type locality recorded as Nguba II in the coastal area of Bata, Equatorial Guinea (coordinates N 1°45.651' E 9°49.443', altitude 138 ft). The species was placed in the genus Fundulopanchax, a genus of West and Central African killifishes within the family Nothobranchiidae (order Cyprinodontiformes). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Malumbres & Castelo, 2001 as the authority for the valid name.
The genus Fundulopanchax is a large and taxonomically complex group of African killifishes spanning a broad sweep of West and Central African lowland and coastal habitats. Morphology
Fundulopanchax avichang is a small, laterally compressed killifish. The holotype measured 1.5 in standard length, and FishBase records a maximum total length of 1 in for males and 1 in for females from wild-type measurements — though tank-bred specimens are reported to reach up to 2.5 in in males and 2 in in females under aquarium conditions, suggesting the wild-caught holotype may have been near the small end of the potential size range, or that aquarium feeding regimes produce noticeably larger individuals. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately elongate, with a rounded caudal fin and the slightly upturned mouth characteristic of surface- and mid-water hunters.
Male colouration is the species' most striking feature. Males display vivid red, orange, and blue stripes running horizontally along the flanks, a pattern that places avichang among the more attractive smaller members of Fundulopanchax. Females are typically plainer, showing the cryptic brownish colouration common to female nothobranchs, and are noticeably less vivid than males at all times. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and immediately apparent even to casual observers.
Fins in males are coloured to complement the body pattern, with pigmentation extending into the dorsal and caudal fins. The caudal fin of the male is often the primary display surface during courtship interactions. Females lack the fin embellishment and are reliably identified by their smaller, drabber appearance.
Habitat

The clutch size is small per spawning event, and the species is considered a reluctant breeder in captivity. Hobbyist accounts consistently note that avichang does not produce the large numbers of eggs typical of, say, gardneri-group Fundulopanchax. Live food conditioning is reported to improve spawning rates. Eggs are collected by siphoning the peat layer or by removing peat bags used as a spawning substrate, and are then incubated either in water at 72–77 °F or in slightly damp peat stored in a sealed container, depending on the incubation period being attempted.

The labyrinth organ is not present in killifish (unlike anabantoids), so water oxygenation supports normal gill respiration throughout development. Fundulopanchax avichang is best suited to a small, heavily planted species tank of 10–15 US gal. Dim lighting, dark substrate, surface floating plants, and driftwood tannins replicate the shaded forest pool environment and bring out the best colouration in males. The water should be soft to moderately soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.2), with temperatures maintained around 72–75 °F — cooler than many tropical aquaria, which suits the species' coastal rainforest origin.
Because F. avichang is a reluctant spawner and produces few eggs, successful breeding requires careful attention to diet and husbandry. Live food conditioning — particularly small live invertebrates such as Daphnia, microworms, and blackworm — is strongly recommended before and during spawning attempts. A peat substrate or peat bag should be provided for egg deposition. Equatorial Guinea's coastal rainforest, the habitat in which this species was collected, faces pressure from agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development. Seasonal pools in lowland coastal forest are among the most easily drained or degraded wetland habitats, and the small, isolated water bodies that killifishes depend on are particularly vulnerable to both direct destruction and indirect hydrological changes. The introduction of invasive species — a factor documented for killifish across West Africa — could also affect small endemic populations that have evolved without competitors or predators.
No targeted surveys or population assessments for F. avichang have been published in the sources available. An updated IUCN assessment incorporating survey data on the current state of the type locality and its drainage would be a valuable conservation contribution.
