Hypsopanchax platysternus is a small, schooling lampeye killifish endemic to the middle and upper Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it inhabits clear forest rivers and brooks across drainages including the Sankuru, Ruki, Mongala, Itimbiri, Aruwimi, Tshopo, and Lualaba. Reaching around 2 in total length, it is a non-annual, continuous egg-layer named for the characteristically iridescent eye that gives all lampeyes their common identity. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though it faces pressure from collection for the domestic aquarium trade and is regarded as genuinely difficult to maintain in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypsopanchax platysternus was originally described as Haplochilus platysternus by John Treadwell Nichols and Ludlow Griscom in 1917, based on material obtained during the American Museum Congo Expedition of 1909–1915. The authority is accordingly cited in parentheses, indicating that the species has been moved from its original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Hypsopanchax platysternus (Nichols & Griscom, 1917).

The genus Hypsopanchax belongs to the family Poeciliidae as currently constituted by most recent classifications, within the broad assemblage of African non-annual lampeye killifishes. Lampeyes as a group are small, schooling cyprinodontiforms of sub-Saharan Africa united by the iridescent photophore-like patch of tissue above the eye that gives the group their name; this tissue catches and scatters light, producing a distinctive blue-green or silver gleam that is thought to aid shoal cohesion in the dimly lit forest streams they inhabit.

The specific epithet platysternus is derived from the Greek platys (broad, flat) and sternon (breast or chest), likely referring to a broad or flattened ventral profile in the type material. Huber's Killi-Data (1996) catalogues the species among the adhesive egg-laying lampeyes — the German hobbyist literature knows it as the Leuchtaugen-Haftlaicher (lampeye egg-sticker), a compound name that simultaneously references both the iridescent eye and the adhesive nature of its eggs.

Morphology

Hypsopanchax platysternus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish with a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), with a common length of around 2 in TL. The body form is typical of the lampeye guild: elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the water surface, and a rounded caudal fin. The dorsal fin is placed well back on the body, roughly above the anal fin, in the characteristic lampeye configuration.

The most immediately striking feature is the eye, which carries the iridescent blue-green or silvery gleam produced by a specialised tissue layer — the light organ — along its upper margin. This is the defining character shared by all lampeyes and is particularly vivid in living fish under natural or warm artificial lighting. General body colouration is pale silvery-olive or yellowish, translucent enough in small individuals to allow the organs to show through. Males display more vivid iridescence and may develop coloured fin margins; females are typically plainer and fuller-bodied when gravid, as is standard for the group.

Habitat

This species is documented from the middle and upper Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with records concentrated around the Kisangani and Yangambi regions and spanning the Sankuru, Ruki, Mongala, Itimbiri, Aruwimi, Tshopo, and Lualaba drainages. It is a non-migratory, benthopelagic species of clear forest rivers and brooks — the equatorial Congo basin's dense canopy streams that are typically tea-coloured from leaf tannins but carry moderate rather than extreme acidity.

FishBase records a water temperature range of 72–77 °F and a pH range of 5.8–7.2 for the species, consistent with the moderately soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral chemistry of Congo forest streams. These are permanent water bodies with continuous flow, not the seasonal pools and flooded grasslands that sustain annual killifishes; Hypsopanchax platysternus is accordingly a non-annual species with no capacity for diapause.

Within its stream habitat the species is typically found in shallow, slower reaches with submerged vegetation, marginal root masses, or overhanging bankside vegetation where small invertebrates are concentrated and the fine plant material needed for egg deposition is available. The benthopelagic designation reflects a tendency to occupy the water column rather than resting on the bottom, consistent with the schooling, surface-oriented biology of the lampeye group.

Feeding

Like most lampeyes, Hypsopanchax platysternus is a microinvertebrate predator. In the clear forest streams of the Congo basin, the diet is likely dominated by small insects and their larvae, aquatic crustaceans, and other zooplankton encountered in the water column and at the surface film. The upturned mouth confirms a preference for surface and near-surface prey.

In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and similarly sized live invertebrates are appropriate staples; finely ground or micro-pellet dried foods may be accepted once the fish are settled, though live food is preferable for conditioning breeding adults. Given the species' documented difficulty in captivity, attention to diet variety and food quality is more important here than with more forgiving killifish species.

Mating

Hypsopanchax platysternus is a non-annual, continuous spawner — the reproductive mode shared by all lampeyes and the direct opposite of the diapausing annual killifishes that lay drought-resistant eggs in drying pools. There is no diapause, no peat-spawning, and no requirement to simulate a dry season; the fish breeds year-round in permanent water whenever conditions are suitable.

Courting males display their iridescent eyes prominently, positioning themselves alongside females and performing lateral display postures that catch the light. The adhesive egg-laying strategy means spawning proceeds as a series of individual or small batch depositions among fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or other soft-textured surfaces rather than as a single mass spawning event. The German common name Leuchtaugen-Haftlaicher (lampeye adhesive-egg-layer) encodes this distinction: the eggs carry a short adhesive filament or sticky coat that anchors them to plant tissue immediately after release.

Breeding

In a well-maintained aquarium, a conditioned pair or small group of Hypsopanchax platysternus will spawn intermittently over an extended period, depositing a few adhesive eggs at a time among fine-leaved aquatic plants, java moss, spawning mops, or submerged root tangles. Each spawning session produces only a small number of eggs, but spawning continues repeatedly across days and weeks, producing a trickle of offspring rather than a single large clutch.

Eggs hatch after approximately 10–14 days at typical lampeye water temperatures (around 73–75 °F), producing small but free-swimming fry that are immediately capable of taking infusoria and newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Because adults will consume eggs and fry given the opportunity, the safest approach is to remove eggs on their plant or mop to a separate rearing vessel, or to maintain the breeding group in a densely planted tank with sufficient cover for fry to evade predation. Rearing water chemistry should match that of the adults: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, well-oxygenated, and at a stable temperature in the 72–77 °F range.

In the aquarium

FishBase and Huber's Killi-Data both flag Hypsopanchax platysternus as a species that is very difficult to maintain in captivity — a notable designation even by the exacting standards of the killifish hobby. The species is commercially collected within the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the domestic aquarium trade, but it does not appear to have established itself as a standard item in international killifish circles, likely due to these husbandry challenges.

Successful maintenance requires close attention to water quality. Clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, in the temperature range of 72–77 °F and pH 5.8–7.2, is the documented preference. The tank should be mature and biologically stable; lampeyes in general are sensitive to dissolved waste accumulation and to swings in chemistry. A planted aquarium with subdued lighting, fine-leaved vegetation, and dark substrate will reduce stress and encourage the iridescent eye patches to show to best advantage.

The species is peaceful and should be kept with small, similarly sized fish that will not outcompete it at feeding time. A species tank or a biotope setup representing a Congo forest stream — dark water, leaf litter, driftwood, and fine-leaved plants — is the most practical approach for those attempting to maintain and breed it. Because the fish is collected from the wild for trade, sourcing captive-bred stock when available reduces pressure on wild populations and generally produces hardier individuals more accustomed to aquarium conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsopanchax platysternus as Least Concern in an assessment by T. Moelants, published in 2010 (assessed 16 February 2009). The evaluation notes a wide range across the Congo basin's central and upper reaches, within which the species occupies a variety of clear-water forest stream habitats, and identifies no evidence of a rapid population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. Population trend data remain unknown.

Nonetheless, the assessment records a genuine threat: the species is commercially harvested for the aquarium trade at a national level within the DRC. This is a domestically driven collection pressure rather than large-scale international export, but it operates on a fish that is already documented as difficult to maintain in captivity — meaning survival rates through the trade chain are likely low, and sustained collection from wild populations may have localised impacts even if the basin-wide population remains large. Broader threats to Congo forest stream fish include ongoing deforestation in the basin's watershed, artisanal and small-scale mining activity that degrades water clarity, and the longer-term pressures of land conversion on riparian habitats. Active conservation management is not in place for this species.
