Taxonomy & naming
Hypsopanchax jobaerti was described by Poll and Lambert in 1965, with the type locality in the Sankuru drainage of what was then the Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The authority appears in parentheses under current nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hypsopanchax jobaerti (Poll & Lambert, 1965), placing the species in the genus Hypsopanchax within the family Procatopodidae, subfamily Procatopodinae — the African lampeye killifishes.
The genus Hypsopanchax belongs to the broader assemblage of African lampeyes, a group of small procatopodid killifishes defined by the iridescent blue-green photophore above the eye — a structure that has given the entire group its common name. Within Procatopodidae, Hypsopanchax is one of several genera distributed across Central and West Africa's lowland river systems. The specific epithet jobaerti honours an individual whose connection to this discovery is recorded in the original description by Poll and Lambert.
Morphology
Jobaert's lampeye is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase). The body plan is typical of the African lampeye group: an elongate, slightly arched back, a rounded caudal fin, and relatively large eyes — the eyes being proportionally prominent in all procatopodids. The defining character shared across the group is the iridescent blue-green patch immediately above the eye, produced by a reflective, light-gathering structure that is especially conspicuous in dim or dappled light.
Colouration is modest but pleasing. The body is typically translucent with a silvery or faintly golden sheen, and the unpaired fins may carry subtle pigmentation. The eye patch glows most vividly when the fish is well-fed, settled, and under appropriate lighting — a key diagnostic to confirm the group identity at a glance. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle; males tend toward slightly more vivid colouration and the body remains slimmer, while females are plumper across the abdomen when gravid with developing eggs.
Habitat
Hypsopanchax jobaerti is a stream specialist confined to the Sankuru drainage and its tributaries — the Mosanji and Bushimaie rivers — in the middle Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FishBase). The Sankuru is a large right-bank tributary of the Kasai, itself a major Congo tributary; the species therefore occupies a circumscribed portion of the vast Congo drainage rather than the full basin. These are permanent, flowing waters in the Congo interior — not seasonal pools — and the species is accordingly a non-annual killifish adapted to stable water conditions throughout the year.
Streams of the Congo lowlands in this region typically flow through forest and forest-edge vegetation, with overhanging plants, submerged roots, and leaf litter providing cover. Water in such streams is generally soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the minimal buffering capacity of the Congo basin's largely granitic and sandy substrates. Temperatures in the lowland Congo interior remain warm and relatively stable year-round, consistent with the species' tropical equatorial location.
Feeding
Like all members of the Procatopodidae, Hypsopanchax jobaerti is an insectivore. FishBase classifies the species as insectivorous. In the wild it feeds on small aquatic and surface-drifting invertebrates — midge larvae, mosquito larvae, copepods, and other microcrustaceans — taken from the water column and from among vegetation and roots near the stream margin.
In aquarium care the species accepts a wide range of appropriately sized live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Cyclops, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and small chironomid larvae all stimulate natural feeding behaviour. Small-particle dry foods may be taken, but the diet should include regular live or frozen invertebrate prey to maintain optimal condition and to encourage the continuous breeding behaviour characteristic of the species.
Mating
Jobaert's lampeye is a non-annual, continuous spawner — a permanent-water breeder whose reproductive cycle is not tied to seasonal drying and does not involve egg diapause. This is the defining distinction within the killifish world: unlike annual killies whose eggs survive in dried-out substrate, lampeyes spawn in living water throughout the year, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, and spawning mops over an extended period.
Males display to females with spread fins and lateral posturing, emphasising the iridescent eye patch. Pairs or small groups engage in chasing and close approaches before eggs are deposited individually or in small batches. The schooling habit of the species means that in a well-planted, multi-specimen tank, spawning can proceed almost continuously at a low level without requiring intervention, and small numbers of fry may appear among the plants without the keeper having specifically set up for breeding.
Breeding
In aquarium practice, Hypsopanchax jobaerti is considered straightforward to breed — consistent with the hobbyist literature describing lampeyes generally as easy, beginner-friendly spawners. Eggs are adhesive and are placed singly or in small batches among fine plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or a floating spawning mop. The eggs are small and may be difficult to see; breeders often allow eggs to accumulate in a well-planted rearing tank and remove adults periodically, or transfer clumps of plant material to a separate vessel for hatching.
Hatching occurs within one to two weeks at warm tropical temperatures (75–79 °F). The fry are tiny and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, commercially prepared fry powders, or paramecium cultures — before graduating to micro-worms and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow. Water quality must remain pristine throughout the rearing period; small, frequent water changes are preferable to infrequent large ones. Fry survival rates are good in a well-established, heavily planted tank where natural microorganisms provide supplemental food. Growth is steady and the fish reach sexual maturity within a few months.
In the aquarium
Jobaert's lampeye is an ideal subject for a well-planted, species or community aquarium housing other small, peaceful West and Central African fish. The species is described by hobby sources as peaceful, schooling, and suitable for both beginners and experienced keepers, provided tankmates are chosen to match its small size and gentle temperament. A group of at least six to eight individuals is recommended to express natural schooling behaviour and to distribute any low-level male rivalry.
A planted aquarium with some floating vegetation, Java moss, or fine-leaved stem plants replicates the shaded stream-margin environment and encourages natural behaviour. Lighting should not be harsh; subdued or diffused light allows the iridescent eye patches to show well and reduces stress. Water conditions should reflect the soft, slightly acidic to neutral parameters of the Congo basin stream environment — temperature 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, low to moderate hardness — though the species tolerates a reasonable range. Efficient but gentle filtration, producing moderate flow rather than strong current, is appropriate for a small stream-dwelling killifish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsopanchax jobaerti as Least Concern in 2009, with the assessment conducted by Moelants. The species is known from the Sankuru drainage in the middle Congo River basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it inhabits permanent streams including the Mosanji and Bushimaie rivers. Its restriction to a defined sub-basin within the Congo system means that any serious degradation of those streams could affect the species disproportionately, even though the current assessment reflects a population considered stable at the time of evaluation.
The Congo basin broadly faces increasing pressure from artisanal and industrial mining activity, particularly in the Kasai–Sankuru region where cobalt and coltan extraction have expanded significantly. Stream sedimentation, chemical contamination from mining run-off, and catchment deforestation all pose potential threats to the clear, well-oxygenated habitats that lampeyes require. The 2009 assessment predates much of this intensification, and updated field surveys would be valuable to confirm that populations remain stable across the species' known range.
