Hypsopanchax jubbi is a small, non-annual lampeye killifish native to the upper Zambezi drainage of northwestern Zambia and the tributaries of the upper Kasai drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a possible extension into eastern Angola. Like all procatopodid lampeyes it is a permanent-water species, inhabiting small rivers and gallery-forest brooks over rocky substrate rather than the seasonal pools that define annual killifish. It was described in 1965 by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Jean-Pierre Lambert and named in honour of Dr Rex Jubb, the South African ichthyologist who collected extensively across southern Africa. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2009, noting no specific threats at that time.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypsopanchax jubbi was formally described by Max Poll and Jean-Pierre Lambert in 1965, with the type locality recorded as Lula, on the Mosanji River in Kasai Province, central Africa — territory that now falls within the Democratic Republic of Congo. The authority is presented in parentheses in the current combination, indicating that the original generic assignment has since been revised. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes confirms the valid combination as Hypsopanchax jubbi (Poll & Lambert, 1965) and places it within the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeye killifishes.

The genus name Hypsopanchax is a compound coined from the Greek hypsi, meaning 'high', combined with Panchax — the historic catch-all genus name applied to many Old World killifish by Meinken in 1932. The specific epithet jubbi honours Dr R. A. 'Rex' Jubb (1905–1987), a prominent South African ichthyologist who contributed substantially to the knowledge of freshwater fishes in sub-Saharan Africa. FishBase confirms this etymology.

Hypsopanchax jubbi is a non-seasonal species. It is emphatically not an annual killifish: it inhabits permanent water and does not lay diapausing eggs in substrate. Its reproductive biology aligns with the continuous plant-spawning lampeye mode shared across the Procatopodidae, and it should not be confused with the Nothobranchius annuals that co-occur broadly in the same sub-Saharan biogeographic zone.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of approximately 2 in, with some sources citing up to 2 in TL — a size range typical for the lampeye group within Procatopodidae. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the manner characteristic of schooling surface-oriented fish, with a slightly upturned mouth indicating a preference for feeding at or near the water surface.

The most diagnostic feature of lampeye killifishes, and the source of the group's common name, is the iridescent light-organ patch situated above the eye. In Hypsopanchax jubbi this photophore produces a characteristic blue-green or silver-blue iridescent gleam that is especially vivid in males and in good lighting conditions. Males display stronger iridescence and more intense colouration overall; females are generally plainer and rounder-bodied when gravid, providing the primary basis for sexual dimorphism in the species.

Scales are small and cycloid in character. The dorsal fin is set well back on the body, and the finnage is generally delicate — consistent with the species' lifestyle in sheltered, low-current gallery-forest streams.

Habitat

Hypsopanchax jubbi inhabits small rivers and brooks running through gallery forest, apparently favouring reaches with rocky or mixed substrates based on FishBase notes for the species. The confirmed native range spans two major drainages: the upper Zambezi River drainage in northwestern Zambia, and the tributaries of the upper Kasai drainage within the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A possible presence in eastern Angola has been noted by FishBase, reflecting the geographic continuity of the upper Zambezi–Kasai watershed, though confirmed collection records from Angola are lacking in the available literature.

The gallery-forest setting defines the species' ambient conditions: light is diffused through a forest canopy, water temperatures are moderated by shade, and the streams are clear rather than turbid. Lampeye killifishes of this type typically encounter near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions in soft, well-oxygenated forest water. FishBase places the species at a tropical latitudinal band of roughly 10°S–13°S, consistent with a central African plateau forest-stream environment.

The species is described as benthopelagic and non-migratory on FishBase, indicating it holds territory within its stream reaches rather than undertaking seasonal movements. Its association with permanent gallery-forest waterways sharply distinguishes it from the annual killifishes (Nothobranchius and relatives) that occupy ephemeral savanna pools at similar latitudes.

Feeding

Lampeye killifishes are micro-predators, feeding on small invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the water column. Hypsopanchax jubbi, with its slightly upturned mouth and surface-oriented body posture, likely targets small insects, emerging aquatic insect larvae, zooplankton, and small crustaceans in its gallery-forest stream habitat. The food web in shaded forest streams is heavily dependent on terrestrial arthropod input — insects falling from the forest canopy overhead — and lampeyes are well positioned to exploit this resource.

In the aquarium, lampeye killifishes of this size and type accept suitably sized live and frozen invertebrates readily: Daphnia, Cyclops, Moina, small bloodworm, and Artemia nauplii are all appropriate. Dried foods of a suitable particle size are also accepted by established fish. The small gape restricts prey size, and overfeeding with foods that are too large can cause digestive problems; small, frequent meals are preferable to larger infrequent ones.

Mating

Hypsopanchax jubbi follows the non-annual, continuous plant-spawning mating strategy shared by the Procatopodidae. Unlike the explosive, brief spawning events of annual killifishes, lampeyes are persistent opportunistic spawners, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs at a time over an extended period rather than a single concentrated reproductive event. Spawning is triggered by the presence of a receptive female and suitable egg-attachment sites rather than by seasonal desiccation cues.

Males display actively to females, using the iridescent eye-patch as a visual signal. The display involves lateral presentation, fin flaring, and positioning alongside the female in proximity to plant material or fine roots where eggs will be deposited. Competition between males for access to females is ongoing at low intensity in a group setting, making the maintenance of small groups (a male with one or several females) the most productive captive arrangement for those breeding the species.

Breeding

Spawning in Hypsopanchax jubbi, as in other procatopodid lampeyes, takes the form of adhesive egg deposition on fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, or submerged roots. The pair assumes a side-by-side position among the vegetation, and one to a few eggs are released and fertilised at each pass. The eggs are adhesive and small, attached individually to plant surfaces where they develop without parental attention. This contrasts starkly with both the substrate-buried diapause eggs of annual killifishes and the elaborate paternal guarding seen in some other small fish families.

Incubation time depends on temperature but is typically in the range of 10–14 days for procatopodid lampeyes at tropical temperatures. Fry are tiny on hatching and require infusoria, rotifers, or commercially prepared micro-fry foods as first foods before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Because the adults may consume eggs and fry, removing newly hatched young to a separate rearing vessel improves survival rates substantially. The species is not listed as challenging to breed in the hobby, and its continuous, trickle-spawning pattern means that a well-conditioned group in a planted aquarium will produce young steadily over time.

In the aquarium

Hypsopanchax jubbi is an uncommon but not impossible species to locate through specialist killifish societies and breeders. It is a peaceful schooling fish best kept in groups where the collective iridescence of the eye-patches is displayed to full effect. A well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting — ideally mimicking the dappled-shade conditions of a gallery-forest stream — suits the species well. Dark substrate and floating plants to diffuse overhead light encourage the fish to be more active and to display more boldly.

Water conditions should reflect the species' native clear, well-oxygenated forest streams: temperatures in the range of approximately 72–79 °F, near-neutral pH, and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration with gentle flow and regular partial water changes maintain the water quality these fish need. The aquarium should be covered, as killifishes are accomplished jumpers.

Hypsopanchax jubbi is a peaceful community species suitable for keeping with other small, gentle fish from comparable biotopes. It should not be housed with significantly larger species that might regard it as food. The killifish hobby is its primary conservation reservoir outside the wild, and the species is best maintained in specialist collections where breeding groups are sustained across generations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsopanchax jubbi as Least Concern (LC) in May 2009, with no specific threats documented at that time. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across two major drainage systems — the upper Zambezi and the upper Kasai — which provides a degree of distributional breadth that reduces vulnerability compared with single-locality endemics.

Nonetheless, gallery-forest streams across central and southern Africa face mounting pressure from deforestation, land conversion for agriculture, and catchment degradation. The loss of riparian forest cover directly degrades the shaded, stable, clear-water habitat that lampeye killifishes depend upon, increasing sedimentation and temperature variability in streams. The upper Kasai basin in the DRC has experienced ongoing disturbance from artisanal mining and agricultural expansion, and the Zambian upper Zambezi tributaries face pressure from land-use change.

Because the 2009 IUCN assessment predates more than a decade of land-use change in the region, the current status may not fully reflect contemporary conditions. A reassessment incorporating recent distribution surveys and habitat condition data would provide a more reliable picture. Maintenance of breeding populations in specialist killifish collections represents a meaningful precautionary contribution to the species' long-term security outside its natural range.
