The zebra lampeye is a small, schooling killifish of the family Procatopodidae, native to the forest-shaded streams and rivers of Gabon and the Republic of Congo. Like all lampeyes it sports the iridescent blue-green supraocular light organ that gives the group its name, and it spawns continuously among fine plants and submerged roots in the permanent waters it inhabits — a non-annual reproductive strategy that sets it apart from the seasonal, soil-spawning killifishes better known in the hobby. Reaching a maximum of about 2 in total length, it is a peaceful and somewhat delicate species that rewards careful maintenance with lively schooling behaviour and the soft shimmer of its reflective eye markings.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypsopanchax zebra was described by the French zoologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1929; since the name has been moved from the genus under which Pellegrin originally placed it, the authority is presented in parentheses as (Pellegrin, 1929). The valid combination is upheld by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which places the species in the genus Hypsopanchax within the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeye killifishes. Some older literature and aquarium references list the species under the family Poeciliidae, a broader historical arrangement; Procatopodidae is the currently accepted family for the African lampeyes.

The genus name Hypsopanchax combines the Greek hypsō (high, raised) with panchax, a historical killifish trade name of obscure origin. The specific epithet zebra refers to the striped or banded markings on the body, comparing the fish's lateral patterning to the familiar pattern of the African equid. The species is sometimes catalogued under junior synonyms in older European hobby literature, but Hypsopanchax zebra (Pellegrin, 1929) is the accepted valid name.

Morphology

The zebra lampeye is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 2 in total length, with a common size of around 1.5 in TL for most adults encountered in the wild and in aquaria (FishBase). The body shape is typical of the procatopodid lampeyes: an elongated, streamlined profile with the dorsal fin set well back over the rear half of the body, paired with a relatively large caudal fin. The eye is notably large for the head size — a feature of most lampeyes — and above it sits the genus's defining ornament: a iridescent blue-green light-organ patch that glows with a metallic lustre under direct lighting.

Body colouration is pale olive-beige to silvery on the flanks, with the zebra patterning of the specific epithet visible as a series of darker transverse bars or stripes along the sides, most prominent in males. The fins are clear to lightly pigmented. Males tend to be somewhat more vividly marked and slimmer than females; females are noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. The dimorphism is moderate rather than dramatic — the sexes are best distinguished by body depth and the relative intensity of the barred pattern.

Habitat

The type locality for Hypsopanchax zebra spans the basins of the upper Ogooué, upper Niari, upper Louesse, Loeme, upper Kouilou, and Foulakari — the last a lower Congo tributary — encompassing southeastern Gabon and central and western Republic of Congo (FishBase). Its range is therefore centred on the forest-covered upland watersheds of west-central Africa, where it inhabits small forest brooks and rivers with moderate to fast flow under a continuous forest canopy.

The water in these forest streams is typically cool, clear, and well-oxygenated, with low to moderate hardness. FishBase records environmental parameters at the type locality of approximately pH 5.8, hardness around 7.2 dGH, and temperature around 68 °F — cool relative to many west African species, reflecting the higher-altitude, shaded-stream character of the habitat. Aquarium-husbandry sources suggest a workable range of 75–82 °F in the tank, somewhat warmer than wild conditions, with pH 6.5–7.5 and hardness 5–15 dGH. The species is not associated with stagnant blackwater swamps; it is a fish of flowing, oxygenated forest streams.

Feeding

Hypsopanchax zebra is an omnivore in the wild, as is typical for small procatopodid lampeyes in forest streams. Its diet is presumed to include small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and zooplankton — along with whatever plant matter and surface insects are available at the forest-stream margin. The species is small-mouthed, so food items must be proportionally sized.

In captivity it accepts high-quality dried foods including fine flake and micro-pellets, along with frozen and live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, and micro-worms. Live and frozen foods appear to support the best colouration and breeding condition. Because the fish is small and not assertive, it must be housed with appropriately sized tankmates or kept as a species and fed in a way that ensures it competes successfully for food.

Mating

Like all lampeyes of the family Procatopodidae, Hypsopanchax zebra is a non-annual killifish. It inhabits permanent forest streams and does not undergo the seasonal diapause cycle of annual killifishes; its eggs do not require a dry-period resting phase and are not buried in substrate peat. Instead, the species spawns continuously over an extended period — a few adhesive eggs at a time — depositing them among fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating plant roots, and surface vegetation at the water margin.

Males display to females with spread fins and intensified colouring, particularly in the barred flanks and the blue supraocular patch. Spawning occurs in brief encounters during which a single egg or a small clutch of adhesive eggs is pressed onto plant material. This distributed, low-intensity spawning strategy results in eggs scattered through the planting over days and weeks rather than a discrete spawning event.

Breeding

In the aquarium, breeding Hypsopanchax zebra follows the pattern common to non-annual lampeyes: the pair or small group spawns continuously among fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or floating Riccia. Eggs are small, adhesive, and relatively robust; they can be collected by removing clumps of plant material to a separate rearing container with gentle aeration and a small amount of antifungal treatment to limit losses.

Incubation takes approximately 10–14 days at typical aquarium temperatures, after which tiny, free-swimming fry appear. First foods should be infusoria or commercial fry-powder preparations, progressing to Artemia nauplii and fine-ground dried foods as the fry grow. Because the species spawns continuously rather than in a single event, a productive colony can be maintained by regular collection of plant clumps from the breeding tank. FishBase notes that the species is considered difficult to maintain in the aquarium, suggesting it is sensitive to water quality; soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated water with minimal organic load is important for long-term success.

In the aquarium

Hypsopanchax zebra is rated as a challenging species in the hobby — FishBase explicitly notes it as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium. This difficulty likely reflects sensitivity to accumulated organic waste, high oxygen demand (consistent with its fast-flowing stream origin), and the cool temperatures of its native habitat. A well-planted, well-filtered aquarium with a stable temperature around 75–79 °F, soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH), and excellent surface agitation for oxygenation suits it best.

As a peaceful schooling species, it should be kept in groups of six or more; solitary individuals or pairs are more stressed and less likely to display natural behaviour. The light-organ shimmer is most visible when the school is healthy and active in good light. Tankmates should be similarly sized and non-aggressive — other small African lampeyes, small tetras of appropriate water parameters, or dwarf rasboras can work, though species-only tanks are the safest approach for breeding colonies. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes its presence in the North American aquarium trade, indicating it is periodically available to specialist hobbyists.

Given its sensitivity, the zebra lampeye is best suited to experienced killifish keepers who can maintain stable, pristine water conditions. Regular small water changes, avoidance of drastic temperature or chemistry swings, and a diet that includes live or frozen foods will give the best results.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsopanchax zebra as Least Concern in 2009 (Moelants, T.), reflecting a distribution across multiple river basins in Gabon and the Republic of Congo rather than a single restricted locality. The species' occurrence in the upper Ogooué, upper Niari, upper Louesse, Loeme, upper Kouilou, and Foulakari systems provides some distributional buffer against localised habitat loss.

Nevertheless, the forest streams that are its habitat are subject to ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and changes to stream hydrology across west-central Africa. Loss of riparian forest canopy raises water temperatures, increases sedimentation, and reduces the oxygenation and flow characteristics that the species depends upon. The cool, fast-flowing, well-shaded stream conditions it occupies are among the more thermally sensitive freshwater microhabitats in the region. While no immediate range-wide threat is currently documented, continued monitoring of forest loss across its Gabonese and Congolese range is warranted to detect any deterioration in its conservation status.
