Brachet's lampeye is a diminutive, non-annual killifish known from savannah brooks of West Africa, with extant populations restricted to just two stream localities in northern Togo. Like all lampeyes it earns its name from the conspicuous silver-blue iridescent spot in the upper iris — a light-catching structure that serves as a species-recognition signal in the dim, tannin-filtered streams it inhabits. The species is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN owing to its tiny global range and the ongoing degradation of the seasonal watercourses on which it depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachet's lampeye was described by Berkenkamp in 1983. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Micropanchax bracheti (Berkenkamp, 1983), placing it in the genus Micropanchax within the family Poeciliidae (sensu lato) — the broad family that accommodates the lampeyes (tribe Procatopodini) under current molecular-supported classification.

The type locality is Lake Arsadé — also transcribed as Lake Orsedi — in the Adda-Galla region, south of Scioa, northeast of Addis Ababa in southern Ethiopia. The species epithet bracheti honours an individual named Brachet, following the standard patronymic tradition in killifish taxonomy.

Micropanchax is a genus of small, schooling lampeyes broadly distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. The genus has undergone considerable revision and the boundaries between Micropanchax and allied lampeye genera such as Aplocheilichthys remain a subject of ongoing ichthyological study. The primary morphological and systematic treatment used as a reference for West African material is Wildekamp and Van der Zee (2003).

Morphology

Micropanchax bracheti is a small, slender lampeye reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase). The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of procatopodine killifish, with rounded, soft-rayed fins and a dorsal fin set well back along the body. Meristic counts are: dorsal fin 6–9 rays; anal fin 11–14 rays; mid-lateral scale count 27–29 (+3).

Sexual dichromatism is moderate. Males are pale yellow-grey overall, with the borders of individual scales outlined in dark grey, producing a distinct reticulated pattern across the flanks. The lower lip is dark grey. A pale blue iridescence is visible on the operculum and along the sides, particularly under lateral light. The unpaired fins — dorsal, anal, and caudal — are pale yellow with dark grey margins; the caudal fin carries small grey spots arranged in faint crescent-shaped crossbars.

Females are paler throughout, the reticulated scale pattern only faintly expressed, and the fins are largely colourless. Both sexes share the defining lampeye character: a silver reflection across the iris and a distinct light-blue iridescent spot in the upper iris, the structure that gives the lampeye group its common name and functions in schooling coordination and mate recognition.

Habitat

Brachet's lampeye inhabits small savannah streams — shallow, often seasonally variable watercourses flowing through open grassland and savannah woodland. It is classified as a freshwater, benthopelagic species, spending time in the mid-water column and close to the substrate of these lotic environments. The savannah-stream habitat contrasts with the dense forest streams occupied by many West African lampeyes, and implies periodic exposure to higher temperatures and lower flows than forest-dwelling congeners experience.

The type locality in Ethiopia — Lake Arsadé in the Adda-Galla region — represents the eastern extreme of the known historical range. Current evidence places the only confirmed living populations in northern Togo, in two savanna brook localities; the Ethiopian population is thought to be extirpated or at minimum unconfirmed by recent surveys. This geographic disjunction between the type locality and the surviving extant range underscores both the species' restricted occurrence and the extent to which habitat loss has reduced it.

Feeding

Like other small procatopodine lampeyes, Micropanchax bracheti is principally a micro-predator, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other small organisms that fall or drift into the water column. The small terminal mouth and slender body plan are consistent with a mid-water, particulate-feeding strategy rather than substrate-grubbing.

In the aquarium the species readily accepts micro-sized live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, cyclops, chironomid larvae, and similar — and can be trained onto high-quality micro-pellets or dried food of appropriate size. Varied feeding that includes live or frozen invertebrate foods helps maintain colour and breeding condition.

Mating

Brachet's lampeye is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent or semi-permanent savannah streams and does not produce diapausing eggs. The reproductive mode is continuous adhesive egg-laying over an extended period, a strategy typical of procatopodine lampeyes and sometimes called the 'Leuchtaugen-Haftlaicher' (lampeye adhesive-spawner) mode in the German killifish literature.

Males court females with lateral displays that show off the iridescent flank colouration and the light-organ patch above the eye. The iridescent upper-iris spot likely plays a role in species recognition and mate assessment within mixed-species lampeye communities. Spawning is a prolonged, low-intensity process rather than a mass-spawning event: pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs individually, attaching them to fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, or similarly textured surfaces at or near the water surface.

Breeding

Spawning is continuous and distributed over many days or weeks. Each egg is individually adhesive and is deposited singly or in very small numbers among fine plant filaments or root masses; the female does not guard the eggs and neither parent provides any care after spawning. Incubation in warm water (75–79 °F) typically takes approximately 10–14 days, and hatching larvae are tiny and delicate.

In captivity, a clump of Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), floating plants, or an equivalent spawning mop positioned near the surface provides adequate spawning sites. Eggs can be collected daily and incubated separately in small containers of slightly antifungal water (a small amount of alder cone extract or similar) to avoid losses to predation and fungus. First foods must be appropriately minute — freshly hatched Artemia nauplii are usually too large for the smallest fry; infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods should be offered initially. This species has a reputation for being very difficult to maintain and breed in the aquarium, requiring pristine water quality, stable conditions, and the very smallest live foods.

In the aquarium

Micropanchax bracheti is documented as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium (FishBase). It is a specialist species suited to experienced killifish keepers who can meet its requirements for stable, clean, oxygen-rich water and appropriately small live foods. The species is small (to 1.5 in) and schooling; a group of six or more individuals in a species-only setup is preferable to a single pair, as the social dynamics of a school reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.

A well-planted tank with dim lighting, gentle filtration, and regular small water changes most closely approximates the clear, slow-flowing savannah streams of its origin. Temperature should be maintained in the warm tropical range appropriate to West African savannah streams; extremes should be avoided. Because it is a continuous spawner, a stand of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop can serve double duty as cover and egg-deposition site. The species should not be mixed with substantially larger fish or aggressive species that might outcompete it for food.

Micropanchax bracheti is rare in the hobby given its restricted wild range and maintenance difficulty. Specimens originate from hobbyist breeding lines rather than wild collection, and the species is maintained by specialist killifish societies. Acquisition through killi-club networks rather than general retailers is the most reliable route.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Micropanchax bracheti as Endangered (EN) in June 2019, under criterion B2ab(iii): a very small estimated area of occupancy combined with continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. The available evidence constrains the species' entire extant global range to just two savanna brook localities in northern Togo. The Ethiopian type locality (Lake Arsadé) appears to represent a historically known occurrence that is no longer confirmed; the Togo populations are the only known remaining ones.

The primary threats to these savannah-stream habitats are agricultural conversion, water extraction for irrigation, and the general degradation of seasonal watercourses in the West African savannah zone through deforestation, overgrazing of riparian margins, and siltation. A species confined to two streams is inherently vulnerable to any stochastic event — drought, pollution, or drainage works affecting either locality — and the loss of one stream would reduce the global range by half.

Conservation of the species depends on the protection of its two known Togolese stream sites and the maintenance of intact riparian vegetation that stabilises stream banks and sustains water quality. Hobbyist captive maintenance through killifish societies provides an insurance population that could theoretically contribute to future conservation efforts, though no formal ex-situ programme is known to be in place.
