Taxonomy & naming
Micropanchax camerunensis was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Hermann Meinken in 1932, with a type locality in the coastal drainages of Cameroon — most likely material from the Rio del Rey basin region. The authority is parenthesised because Meinken's original placement has been revised: the species now sits in the genus Micropanchax, which was resurrected and redefined to receive a group of small, iridescent-eyed West and Central African lampeyes that had previously been scattered across Aplocheilichthys and related genera.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) treats Micropanchax camerunensis (Meinken, 1932) as the valid name. The genus Micropanchax belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeyes — a group characterised by the light-organ patch above the eye, schooling behaviour, and non-annual reproductive strategy tied to permanent rather than seasonal water bodies. Procatopodidae also includes Procatopus (a wood-spawner of forest streams), the deep-water Rocky crevice spawner Lamprichthys of Lake Tanganyika, and several other West African genera.
No subspecies or recognised geographic variants are currently listed for this species. It is sympatric in parts of its range with Micropanchax pumilus and Micropanchax fasciolatus, both of which occupy overlapping stretches of Cameroonian and neighbouring West African forest streams.
Morphology
Micropanchax camerunensis is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 1 in standard length, with females reported to be marginally larger than males. The body profile is typical of the genus: cylindrical toward the head, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle, with the dorsal fin placed far back and roughly opposite the anal fin — a configuration shared across the Procatopodidae.
The most distinctive feature is the iridescent blue-green photophore situated above the pupil, a vascularised light-organ patch present in all Micropanchax species and responsible for the common name "lampeye." In males this patch is particularly vivid and brightens during courtship and social display. Flanks are silvery to pale olive, often with a faint iridescent sheen, and unpigmented or very lightly marked compared to many other killifish groups. The fins are translucent to slightly yellowish.
Sexual dimorphism is modest: males have a more intensely coloured photophore and may show slightly brighter body iridescence; females are plainer and become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid. The absence of dramatic colour differences between the sexes is characteristic of the lampeye group, which relies more on the reflective eye patch and schooling behaviour for mate signalling than on bold pattern contrasts.
Habitat
The Cameroon lampeye is endemic to Cameroon, with its documented range centred on the coastal drainage zone and the Rio del Rey basin, which empties into the Bight of Biafra. Within this area it occupies rainforest streams and river margins at altitudes from near sea level to approximately 1640 ft — clear, well-oxygenated waters flowing through or adjacent to intact lowland rainforest. These are permanent-water habitats: unlike the savanna and Sahel-zone annual killifish that exploit temporary rain pools, Micropanchax camerunensis inhabits streams that maintain year-round flow, though seasonal rainfall affects water depth and current strength.
Water conditions in these Cameroonian forest streams are soft and mildly acidic, reflecting the low-mineral granite and sandy substrates of the coastal plain and the leaching of organic material from leaf litter and forest debris. FishBase records a temperature range of 68–75 °F and pH 6.0–7.0, with hardness of 4–8 dGH — conditions consistent with the well-shaded, humus-rich streams typical of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest zone. The species shares these habitats with other Micropanchax congeners, along with a diverse assemblage of Barbus, Aphyosemion, and small cichlids characteristic of the West African forest stream fauna.
The association with intact forest is ecologically significant: the water chemistry and thermal stability that lampeyes require depend on the shade, leaf litter input, and infiltration properties of undisturbed forest catchments. Degraded or open-canopy streams typically show higher temperatures and altered chemistry that suit more generalist species.
Feeding
Like most small lampeyes, Micropanchax camerunensis is a microinvertebrate feeder in the wild, taking zooplankton, small aquatic invertebrates, copepods, daphnia, midge larvae, and similar small prey items from the water column and at or near the surface. Algae and organic detritus likely form a minor supplementary component of the diet, as is the case for many small-bodied stream killifish.
In captivity the species adapts readily to appropriately sized prepared foods. Micro-pellets, flake food crumbled small, frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp nauplii, and live daphnia are all accepted. Because of the fish's small size — adults are typically 1 in — food particle size matters; oversized food is ignored. A varied diet that includes live or frozen microinvertebrates alongside prepared foods maintains the best condition and brings out spawning behaviour in adults.
Mating
Micropanchax camerunensis is a non-annual, continuous spawner — one of the defining characteristics that separates the lampeye group from the well-known annual killifish of the genus Nothobranchius and their relatives. In permanent-water habitats where no dry season eliminates the water body, there is no selective pressure for diapausing eggs or compressed seasonal reproduction, and lampeyes instead distribute spawning broadly across the year.
Courtship in the genus Micropanchax centres on the iridescent photophore: males flash and orient their eye patches toward females during close-quarters display, using the light-organ reflection as a visual signal. A gravid female is approached and the pair briefly aligns alongside or beneath overhanging vegetation or fine-leaved plant stems before spawning. The male's photophore is at its most vivid during active courtship and distinguishes him clearly from the plainer female in the low-light conditions of forest stream margins.
Breeding
Spawning involves the release of a small number of adhesive eggs — typically one to a few at a time — attached among fine aquatic plants, roots, and submerged vegetation. This scatter-spawning strategy, repeated over an extended period rather than in a single mass release, is typical of non-annual Procatopodidae. Because breeding is continuous rather than seasonal, a conditioned pair or small group will spawn steadily in a well-planted aquarium without any seasonal triggers.
Eggs are small, adhesive, and transparent to slightly amber-tinted. Incubation at 72–75 °F takes approximately 10–14 days, consistent with the development rate of related lampeyes at similar temperatures. The newly hatched fry are very small and require infusoria or commercial fry-powder as first foods before graduating to nauplii. Adults do not guard eggs or fry and will consume them if given the opportunity; in dedicated breeding set-ups, either the adults are removed after egg-laying is observed, or dense fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum) are provided as refuge for fry. Growth to adult size is relatively rapid given the small maximum size of the species.
In the aquarium
Micropanchax camerunensis is a peaceful, schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more individuals; single specimens or pairs become shy and show little of the active, mid-water schooling behaviour that makes lampeyes attractive. A well-planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a small group, with gentle filtration to maintain current without disturbing the fine-leaved plants among which they prefer to spawn and shelter. Floating plants or overhanging vegetation near the surface — where the fish naturally spend much of their time — are appreciated.
Water parameters should reflect the soft, mildly acidic forest-stream conditions of their native habitat: temperature 70–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, hardness 4–10 dGH, with clean, well-oxygenated water and regular partial changes. Hard or alkaline tap water will stress the fish over time; reverse-osmosis water blended to the target hardness is preferable in areas with hard municipal supply.
Tankmates should be similarly small and peaceful — other lampeyes, small Corydoras, dwarf rasboras, or small characins are suitable; any species large enough to view lampeyes as food is inappropriate. The Cameroon lampeye is not a commonly encountered species in the mainstream hobby but circulates among specialist killi clubs and through the AKA (American Killifish Association) network; sourcing is easiest through hobbyist exchanges rather than general retail.
Conservation
Micropanchax camerunensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — a situation common to a large proportion of West African stream killifish, many of which are restricted to small, poorly surveyed drainage systems and have received limited attention from conservation assessors. Its absence from the Red List should not be read as ecological security.
The species is endemic to Cameroon's coastal drainages and the Rio del Rey basin — a region that falls within one of Africa's most biologically significant but also most threatened rainforest zones, the Cross-Sanaga interval of the Guineo-Congolian forest. Threats include continued conversion of lowland rainforest to agriculture and oil palm, the associated sedimentation and warming of forest streams as canopy cover is lost, and the introduction of invasive species (particularly mosquitofish, Gambusia spp.) that prey on lampeye eggs and fry in disturbed watercourses. Because the species is tied to intact, shaded forest streams with specific water chemistry, habitat conversion likely represents the primary long-term threat. Formal survey work and IUCN assessment for this and other Micropanchax species of the Cameroonian forest zone would clarify the conservation picture considerably.
