Johnston's lampeye is one of the most widespread lampeye killifishes in sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from the Congo basin and East African rift drainages south to the Zambezi system, Okavango, and coastal rivers of Mozambique and South Africa. A small, surface-oriented schooling fish, it haunts the vegetated margins of slow rivers, floodplain swamps, and backwater pools, feeding on tiny invertebrates at or near the water surface. Like all lampeyes it wears the hallmark iridescent blue-green luminous patch above the eye — an optical structure that catches the light in open water and aids shoal cohesion. Despite its modest size, Johnston's lampeye is a resilient generalist with an unusually broad latitudinal spread for the group, and the IUCN Red List assesses it as Least Concern across its full range.

Taxonomy & naming

Micropanchax johnstoni was described by Albert Günther in 1893, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the authority in parentheses — (Günther, 1893) — indicating the species has been moved since its original placement. A secondary citation of Günther, 1894 appears in some older hobbyist literature, a discrepancy reflecting the complicated publication chronology of the Günther monograph series; the date 1893 is the accepted one. The species is placed in the genus Micropanchax within the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeye killifishes.

The genus Micropanchax is itself a relatively recent stabilisation of what had been a taxonomically turbulent assemblage. Historically many lampeyes were shuffled between Aplocheilichthys, Poropanchax, and allied genera; current molecular and morphological treatments support Micropanchax as a valid, diagnosable genus. The specific epithet johnstoni honours Sir Harry Johnston (1858–1927), the British naturalist, explorer, and colonial administrator who collected widely in Central and East Africa and whose specimens formed the basis of several ichthyological descriptions by Günther and Boulenger.

Morphology

Johnston's lampeye is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching up to 3.5 in total length (FishBase), though most individuals encountered in the wild and in the aquarium are considerably smaller — a common size of around 2 in TL is typical, and males in breeding condition are generally more slender and slightly smaller than ripe females. The body profile tapers toward both ends, with a pointed snout and a strongly upturned mouth ideally positioned for surface feeding.

The most distinctive feature is the iridescent supraorbital luminous organ — the 'lamp eye' — a patch of specialised reflective tissue immediately above the pupil that glows with a blue-green or turquoise sheen when light catches it. The intensity of this iridescence is influenced by light angle and water clarity, and in a well-lit school the effect is striking. General body colouration is translucent silver-olive, with the internal organs faintly visible through the flanks. The fins are largely clear or very lightly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: mature females are fuller-bodied and have a more rounded abdomen when gravid; males may show slightly more vivid colouration at the lateral line.

Habitat

Micropanchax johnstoni is widely distributed across southern Africa, with records from Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (FishBase). This range encompasses a remarkable variety of water body types, and the species shows considerable tolerance — it inhabits river backwaters, seasonally flooded plains, vegetated swamps, slower tributary creeks, and stagnant pools. It is characteristically a near-surface fish, associating with emergent and floating vegetation at the water's edge rather than occupying open midwater or benthic zones.

Temperature data from FishBase places the thermal range at 64–79 °F, consistent with the subtropical and tropical lowland habitats it occupies. Across its range it likely encounters a fairly broad range of water chemistry, from the softer, slightly acidic waters of forested catchments to the harder, more alkaline conditions of open savanna rivers, though it generally favours clear, well-oxygenated water rather than the blackwater extreme. The broad geographic span of the species — from the great rift-lake catchments to the Cape coastal rivers — reflects a generalist life-history strategy uncommon in a genus that otherwise includes several range-restricted specialists.

Feeding

Like most lampeye killifishes, Johnston's lampeye is a micro-predator targeting small invertebrates at and just below the water surface. FishBase lists the wild diet as mosquito larvae, daphnia, and comparable small crustaceans and aquatic insects — prey items consistent with the surface-hunting posture and the small upturned mouth. Surface feeding allows the species to exploit the productive film layer where terrestrial insect fall and emergent invertebrate activity concentrate food for small, agile predators.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen daphnia, artemia, bloodworm, and mosquito larvae readily, and will adapt to micro-pellets or finely crushed flake offered at the surface. Because individuals are small, particle size matters: food that sinks away quickly may be ignored by surface-oriented fish. Offering a variety of live and frozen small invertebrates supports condition, colouration, and the readiness to spawn.

Mating

Johnston's lampeye is a non-annual, continuous plant-spawner — one of the lampeye guild's characteristic reproductive modes in permanent water systems. Unlike the annual killifishes of seasonal pools, which produce diapausing eggs buried in mud that survive the dry season, Micropanchax johnstoni inhabits permanent or long-lasting water bodies and spawns repeatedly throughout a protracted breeding season rather than racing to complete one intense reproductive effort before a habitat disappears.

Spawning is sequential and adhesive: pairs engage in brief close-contact mating events during which one or a small number of eggs are deposited and fertilised at a time. The eggs are sticky and adhere to fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots hanging into the water, or filamentous algae. In a well-fed group kept in appropriate conditions, spawning activity is continuous, with individual females laying a few eggs daily over many weeks. The extended, low-intensity spawning strategy is well matched to the stable, food-reliable environments the species inhabits.

Breeding

The adhesive eggs of Johnston's lampeye hatch after approximately 15–20 days at typical temperatures (SANBI). This relatively long incubation period compared to annual killifish reflects the non-annual life history, where there is no selective pressure to accelerate development ahead of a drying deadline. Eggs are best left in place on plant material or, in a breeding setup, transferred with the plant medium to a separate grow-out vessel.

Fry are tiny at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods — paramecia or commercial infusoria preparations are the standard opening diet, with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii introduced as soon as the fry are large enough to handle them. Growth is moderate and individuals reach sexual maturity within around six months under good feeding conditions (SANBI). Because spawning is continuous in a healthy group, multiple cohorts of eggs and fry at different developmental stages may coexist in a breeding setup, simplifying the supply of fry to interested keepers while demanding careful size-grading to prevent cannibalism of smaller fry by older juveniles.

In the aquarium

Johnston's lampeye is an undemanding and peaceful aquarium fish well suited to small species setups or carefully chosen community tanks with non-boisterous tankmates of comparable or larger size. A group of eight or more individuals is ideal — the species is a shoaler and behaves more naturally, with better colour expression, when kept in sufficient numbers. A tank length of 23.5 in or more with a well-planted surface layer (floating plants or plants reaching the surface) gives the fish appropriate structural cover and spawning substrate.

Water conditions should reflect the subtropical to tropical range: 68–79 °F, near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate hardness are all acceptable. The tank must be covered — like all small surface fish, Johnston's lampeye can jump from open vessels. Feeding is straightforward with the small live and frozen invertebrates described above, supplemented with quality micro-pellets. For those interested in breeding, a sparse dedicated spawning tank with fine Java moss or spawning mops, a sponge filter, and a small group of well-conditioned adults will produce eggs continuously; removing the egg-bearing plant medium weekly prevents predation and allows controlled rearing.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Micropanchax johnstoni as Least Concern — a status backed by the species' exceptionally wide distribution across a dozen countries in Central, East, and southern Africa and its tolerance of a broad range of wetland habitat types. SANBI concurs with the global assessment, noting the absence of major widespread threats and a stable overall population picture across the species' South African range. No significant range contraction or population decline trend has been documented in the literature.

That said, local pressures apply in parts of the range. Wetland drainage for agriculture, the modification of floodplain hydrology by dams and irrigation schemes, and the introduction of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) to control larval mosquitoes all represent threats to small surface-oriented killifishes in southern Africa. Micropanchax johnstoni's breadth of range and habitat tolerance provide a buffer that more narrowly endemic lampeye species lack, but the trajectory of wetland loss in the region means the Least Concern status should not be read as ecological invulnerability. Maintaining intact marginal vegetation along slow rivers and preserving seasonal floodplain connectivity are the habitat-level actions most beneficial to this and associated lampeye species.
