Micropanchax keilhacki is a small non-annual lampeye killifish endemic to the coastal and central rivers and brooks of Togo in West Africa. First described by Ahl in 1928 from near Anecho on the Togolese coast, it belongs to the family Procatopodidae — a clade of roughly 100 oviparous African lampeyes characterised by the iridescent light-organ patch above the eye that gives the group its name. A species of permanent, clear freshwaters, it reproduces by continuous adhesive egg-spawning rather than the seasonal diapause strategy of annual killifishes, and the IUCN currently assesses it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Micropanchax keilhacki was described by Ernst Ahl in 1928 under the name Aplocheilichthys keilhacki, with a type locality recorded as near Anecho (also written Anécho), Togoland — at that time a German colonial territory that had passed into French administration. The CLOFFA faunal database refines the collecting locality to Djâ ta, a site approximately three hours east of Anecho, in a lagoon system close to the Togolese coast. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) places the valid species in the genus Micropanchax and records the current combination as Micropanchax keilhacki (Ahl, 1928), placing the authority in parentheses to indicate the name has been moved from its original genus. The junior synonym Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus Meinken 1932 is also recorded in the Catalog.

Phylogenetically, the species belongs to Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes — a multigene analysis by Bragança et al. confirming this as a family of approximately 100 non-annual, oviparous killifishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Micropanchax is the largest genus in the family, containing a suite of small lampeyes spread across West and Central Africa. The Bight Drainages of West Africa — the coastal river systems between the Niger Delta and the Gulf of Guinea — are recognised as the ecoregion that encompasses this species' range.

Morphology

Micropanchax keilhacki is a slender, streamlined lampeye reaching approximately 1 in total length (FishBase), placing it among the smaller members of its genus. The body form is typical of the procatopodid lampeyes: elongate, laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for feeding at or just below the water surface. The large eyes, proportionally prominent for the body size, are characteristic of the genus and give the fish its alert, wide-eyed appearance.

The defining feature shared by all lampeyes is the iridescent light-organ above the pupil — a patch of specialised tissue that refracts ambient light to produce a vivid blue or blue-green glow. In Micropanchax keilhacki this patch is present and conspicuous in live fish, particularly in males, where the iridescence is most intense. Outside the eye patch, colouration is subdued: the body is semi-transparent to pale golden-silver, with the internal organs and vertebral column visible through the flanks. Sexual dimorphism is mild, males being slightly more intensely coloured and slender; females rounder-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Micropanchax keilhacki is native to the small rivers and brooks of the forested coastal and central zones of Togo. The type locality near Anecho is a low-lying coastal lagoon environment, while the broader recorded distribution encompasses forested freshwater drainages of the Bight of Benin region. FishBase records the habitat as permanent freshwater — not seasonal or ephemeral pools — with a water temperature around 77 °F, a neutral pH of approximately 7, and a hardness of roughly 10 dGH (soft to moderately soft). These are clear, well-oxygenated water bodies typical of forested West African lowlands.

As a non-annual species inhabiting permanent water, Micropanchax keilhacki does not require the desiccation-resistant diapausing eggs that characterise annual killifish adapted to seasonal pools. Its habitat is instead associated with the fringing vegetation and surface film of streams and lagoon margins, where the species finds both food and spawning substrate. The narrow endemic range, confined to a small section of coastal Togo, reflects a limited natural distribution rather than a widespread but poorly collected taxon.

Feeding

Like all procatopodid lampeyes, Micropanchax keilhacki is an insectivore. In the wild it feeds primarily on small invertebrates taken at or near the water surface — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and emerging insects that land on the surface film. The upturned mouth is well adapted for this surface-feeding habit, allowing the fish to intercept prey without tipping the body out of a near-horizontal posture.

In captivity the species accepts finely sized live and frozen foods without difficulty. Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms, and small chironomid larvae (bloodworm) are all appropriate. Dry foods of sufficiently fine particle size may also be taken, though live and frozen invertebrate foods should form the core of the diet to maintain condition and colouration. The small adult size limits the range of suitable prey items, and care should be taken not to offer food particles too large to be handled comfortably.

Mating

Micropanchax keilhacki is a non-annual, continuous spawner — its reproductive mode is fundamentally different from the seasonal annual killifish with which it is sometimes confused by newcomers to the group. There is no diapause, no dry season dormancy, and no requirement for peat-moss incubation of eggs. The species spawns persistently throughout the year whenever conditions are suitable, releasing small numbers of adhesive eggs during each spawning event rather than producing a single large clutch.

Males court females with lateral displays, orienting alongside the female and intensifying the iridescent eye-patch display. Spawning occurs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged mosses, or fibrous root systems at the water surface or just below it, with the pair coming into brief contact while eggs are fertilised and attached to the vegetation. This spawning behaviour is typical of the Procatopodidae as a family, as confirmed by the multigene phylogenetic analysis of Bragança et al.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Micropanchax keilhacki spawns among fine-leaved plants or Java moss, to which the small, adhesive eggs are individually attached. The pair can be conditioned on live and frozen invertebrates and will spawn repeatedly without any particular seasonal trigger. Egg production per day is modest — a few to a dozen or more eggs — but maintained over weeks and months the cumulative yield is substantial.

FishBase notes that the species is very difficult to maintain in the aquarium, suggesting sensitivity to water quality and possibly to the specific conditions of its native soft, neutral water. Replicating the soft, slightly warm, well-oxygenated conditions of Togolese forest streams — low hardness, pH close to neutral, good surface agitation, moderate temperature around 75–79 °F — is advisable. Eggs hatch after several days depending on temperature; fry are small and require infusoria or paramecia before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Separating eggs or spawning pairs from adults prevents predation on eggs and newly hatched fry.

In the aquarium

Micropanchax keilhacki is an uncommon species in the hobby, kept mainly by specialist killifish enthusiasts rather than the general aquarium trade. Its small adult size (1 in TL) means it requires a modest aquarium, but water quality must be carefully maintained. A well-planted tank with a dark substrate, subdued lighting, and soft, neutral water mimicking its forest-stream habitat suits the species well. Surface vegetation or floating plants help replicate the surface-feeding and spawning conditions it uses in the wild.

As a schooling species it should be kept in groups — a small group of six or more individuals produces more natural behaviour and better displays of the eye-patch iridescence than isolated pairs. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly sized and non-aggressive; large or boisterous fish will stress and outcompete this small surface dweller. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Micropanchax keilhacki as Least Concern (LC), reflecting a current status of no immediate extinction risk at the species level. The assessment records the 2020 status revision. However, the species is a narrow endemic of coastal and central Togo — a country whose forested freshwater habitats face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and the drainage or modification of small streams and lagoon-margin habitats. The type locality near Anecho is in a densely populated coastal zone subject to land-use change.

As a non-annual species dependent on permanent water, Micropanchax keilhacki has no capacity to persist through seasonal habitat loss via diapausing eggs. Any sustained reduction in the quality or permanence of its small stream and lagoon habitats would directly affect local populations. The species' restricted range in the Bight Drainages ecoregion means that threats operating across Togo's coastal watersheds — sedimentation from deforestation, pollution from agriculture, and infrastructure development — merit continued monitoring, and a future reassessment with updated distributional surveys would strengthen confidence in the LC rating.
