Micropanchax pfaffi was described by the German ichthyologist Werner Ladiges in 1961, with type material collected from West Africa. Because the original genus placement has since been revised, the authority is presented in parentheses. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid combination as Micropanchax pfaffi (Ladiges, 1961), placing the species within the genus Micropanchax Hoedeman, 1958, in the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes.
Micropanchax is a widespread African genus of small schooling killifishes united by the lampeye character: a supraorbital photophore or light-reflecting tissue that produces the iridescent blue-green gleam above the eye. The genus encompasses species distributed from West Africa through the Congo basin and East Africa, and the relationships among them have been subject to ongoing revision as molecular phylogenetics has refined the boundaries of genera within Procatopodidae. Micropanchax pfaffi sits within the West African radiation of the genus.
The species epithet honours the collector or dedicatee named Pfaff, following the long ornithological and ichthyological tradition of commemorating expedition members or sponsors in new species names. No vernacular English name is in wide use for this species; it is known in the killifish hobby almost exclusively by its scientific name.
Morphology
Micropanchax pfaffi is a small, slender-bodied lampeye reaching approximately 1 in standard length at maturity. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, elongated, with a relatively straight dorsal profile and a mouth directed somewhat upward, adapting the fish to surface and near-surface feeding. The scales are moderate in size and cycloid in character.
The diagnostic feature shared by all procatopodid lampeyes is the iridescent light organ or photophore above the eye, which in Micropanchax pfaffi produces the characteristic blue-green to turquoise gleam that is the source of the common name 'lampeye'. This structure reflects and refracts light and is visible in motion, particularly in oblique lighting; it is thought to play a role in maintaining shoal cohesion in the dappled, often low-light conditions of forest streams and swamp margins.
Colouration in both sexes is generally translucent to silvery on the flanks with a pale olive or yellowish-brown tone along the dorsal surface. The lampeye patch is the most vivid element. Males may develop slightly more saturated colours and a more pronounced light organ gleam than females, but marked sexual dichromatism is not a feature of the species.
Habitat
Micropanchax pfaffi inhabits permanent bodies of water in West Africa — streams, swamp margins, and the shallow, vegetated edges of rivers and pools. As a non-annual species it is not dependent on seasonal, rain-filled pans that dry completely each year; instead it occupies perennial water where populations persist year-round. This ecological profile contrasts sharply with the annual killifishes of the same region, which time their life cycle to the brief existence of temporary savannah pools.
Habitats used by West African lampeyes of this type typically include clear to lightly tea-stained forest streams, swamp edges with emergent and submerged vegetation, and the slower, well-vegetated margins of larger rivers. Fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, and organic debris provide both spawning substrate and cover for small fry. Water conditions in such habitats tend toward soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the laterite and forest soils of the Guinea Highlands drainage.
The species' range encompasses parts of Guinea and surrounding countries of the Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot, a region recognised for its high endemism among freshwater fishes and its elevated conservation sensitivity.
Feeding
Micropanchax pfaffi is a micro-predator and opportunistic feeder, taking small invertebrates from the water surface and the upper water column. The upturned mouth is well adapted to surface feeding: small aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, crustacean nauplii, and zooplankton form the bulk of the natural diet. This feeding mode is consistent across the procatopodid lampeyes generally.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding once the scale of food items is correctly sized. Because adults rarely exceed 1 in, appropriately small foods are essential: newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, microworms, grindal worms, Daphnia, and finely powdered dried foods of high protein content are all accepted. Oversize foods are ignored or spat out. As surface and mid-water feeders, sinking pellets are poorly utilised; floating or slow-sinking micro-granules suit the feeding posture better.
Mating
Micropanchax pfaffi is a non-annual, continuous egg-layer — a fundamental distinction from the annual killifishes that dominate the hobby's imagination. It does not lay diapausing eggs in substrate destined to dry out; instead it spawns persistently over a long period, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, moss, and root tangles in permanent water. This strategy suits a fish of perennial habitats where there is no selective pressure to compress reproduction into a brief wet season.
Males display to females with lateral posturing, fanning the unpaired fins and intensifying the gleam of the supraorbital light organ. Spawning is a brief, close-contact event in which a single egg or a small cluster of eggs is deposited and fertilised among plant stems or roots. The pair repeat the act many times across days and weeks. There is no paternal guarding of eggs or territory in the manner of bubble-nest builders; the adhesive egg coat protects the eggs by anchoring them out of the current among vegetation rather than by parental defence.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions Micropanchax pfaffi spawns readily when maintained in a species tank or small species-specific setup with dense fine-leaved planting — Java moss, Taxiphyllum species, or synthetic spawning mops serve as egg-deposition sites. Water should be soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.2), and warm (72–79 °F). The adhesive eggs are small, clear, and relatively tough; they hatch in approximately 10–14 days depending on temperature.
Fry are very small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry preparations of the finest grade for the first week, transitioning to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Because adults are continuous spawners, eggs and newly hatched fry can coexist in a well-planted tank without the adults consuming the entire clutch, though dedicated rearing vessels give better fry survival. Growth to juvenile size is moderately fast in warm, clean water with regular feeding.
The continuous-spawning, plant-depositing mode means that a maintained colony will produce cohorts of fry at various stages simultaneously. Regular harvesting of eggs from mops or moss and hatching them in small, covered containers is the standard approach among specialist killifish keepers for maximising yield.
In the aquarium
Micropanchax pfaffi is a specialist fish suited to small, dedicated setups rather than general community aquaria. Its very small adult size (under 1 in) and the need for appropriately scaled food items mean it is best kept with its own kind or with other similarly sized, peaceful West African species. Larger tankmates may outcompete it for food or cause sufficient disturbance to suppress spawning behaviour. A shoal of six or more individuals is recommended to elicit natural schooling behaviour and allow the characteristic lampeye display to be observed.
A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding colony. Dense planting with fine-leaved species is important both as spawning substrate and as refuge; low to moderate water flow suits the still- and slow-water habitats the species occupies naturally. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2, hardness 2–10 °dGH) kept at 72–79 °F replicates the West African forest stream environment. Regular small water changes maintain the water quality that small killifishes need.
This species is not commercially common and is found mainly through specialist killifish societies and hobbyist exchanges rather than in general retail. Keepers interested in West African lampeyes often obtain it through the American Killifish Association (AKA), the British Killifish Association (BKA), or equivalent national societies that maintain species availability through member fish distributions.
Conservation
Micropanchax pfaffi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This absence of assessment is common among minor species of the vast African killifish fauna, where the sheer number of described species and the frequent re-descriptions and taxonomic revisions have outpaced the capacity of conservation assessors.
The species is native to the Upper Guinea region of West Africa, a biodiversity hotspot facing substantial pressure from deforestation, mining, agricultural conversion, and the expansion of human settlement. Freshwater fish communities in this region are highly endemic and correspondingly fragile; small-ranged species dependent on forest streams are particularly vulnerable to watershed degradation and sedimentation that degrades water quality and eliminates the fine-leaved vegetation on which lampeyes depend for spawning. The introduction of exotic species — particularly Nile tilapia and mosquitofish (Gambusia) — into West African waters has impacted native small fish communities in many areas.
A formal IUCN assessment for Micropanchax pfaffi would require up-to-date distributional surveys to establish the extent of occurrence, population trend data, and an evaluation of specific threats across its range. Until such an assessment is completed, its conservation needs remain unknown.
