Taxonomy & naming
Nematolebias papilliferus was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2004 and is placed in the family Rivulidae, the South American annual killifishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Nematolebias papilliferus Costa, 2004. The genus Nematolebias is a small group of rivulids characterised by elaborate filamentous fin extensions in males and highly developed sexually dimorphic colour patterns — traits reflected in both the genus and species names.
The genus name Nematolebias combines the Greek nema (thread) with Lebias, a historical killi genus name, alluding to the thread-like fin rays that male Nematolebias develop. The specific epithet papilliferus is Latin for 'bearing papillae' or 'papilla-bearing', a reference to small projections or tubercles on the male's scales or fins that distinguish this species from its congeners.
Nematolebias is closely allied to other Brazilian coastal-draining annual killifish genera, and its classification has been refined several times as molecular and morphological studies have resolved relationships within Rivulidae. FishBase records the species under family Rivulidae with FishBase ID 59733.
Morphology
Males reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase — large for an annual rivulid, as many species in this group mature at 1–1.5 in. Males are substantially more colourful and more elaborately finned than females, which is the typical pattern across Nematolebias. Males display vivid iridescent body colouration — blues, greens, and reds are characteristic of the genus — with the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins bearing the filamentous extensions that define Nematolebias. In breeding condition the colours intensify markedly and the fins fully extend.
Females are smaller, cryptically coloured in browns and olives with less patterning, and lack the elongated fin rays of males. This pronounced sexual dimorphism is typical of the genus and reflects strong sexual selection in a short-lived species where male display quality is directly tied to reproductive success. The body form is robust and slightly laterally compressed, as in most rivulids adapted to shallow, still water.
Habitat
Nematolebias papilliferus is native to the Laguna de Maricá and Laguna de Saquarema basins in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. Both systems are shallow coastal lagoon complexes separated from the Atlantic by sandy barrier strips. The species inhabits the ephemeral pools, marshes, and seasonally flooded grasslands associated with these lagoon margins — soft-bottomed, shallow, often heavily vegetated pools that fill during the rainy season and contract or dry completely in the dry season.
Water chemistry in these coastal lowland pools tends toward the soft and slightly acid side. Fishipedia records a temperature range of 72–82 °F and a pH around 6.5 for the species, consistent with the low-altitude subtropical coastal environment. Feeding
Nematolebias papilliferus is carnivorous, as is typical of Rivulidae generally. In the wild it feeds on invertebrates available in the shallow, soft-bottomed pools it inhabits — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates that colonise seasonal pools. In the aquarium the species accepts a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods. AMAZONAS Magazine reports that fry are readily raised on baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), and adults take a variety of small live or frozen items. A varied, meaty diet maintains the vivid colouration for which the genus is prized and supports condition in fish with a naturally short lifespan.
Mating
Nematolebias papilliferus is an annual killifish, and its mating system reflects the extreme constraints of life in ephemeral pools. Males are territorial and use their elaborate colouration and fin displays to compete for females and establish spawning priority within the small volume of a seasonal pool. Male display involves erecting and spreading the elaborate dorsal, caudal, and anal fins to maximise the visual signal of colour and fin length. Breeding
Breeding in Nematolebias papilliferus follows the archetypal annual rivulid mode: the pair dive together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — and the female deposits eggs directly in the bottom material while the male fertilises them. The fertilised eggs are left buried in the substrate and pass the dry season in diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows them to survive complete desiccation of the pool for weeks or months. In the hobby, peat or coir is used as the spawning medium; after spawning the medium is lightly dried and stored in sealed bags or containers for a period of several weeks to a few months before being re-wetted, triggering hatching. A dark substrate, subdued lighting, and planting or floating cover bring out the best colouration in males.
Water parameters should follow the soft, slightly acid conditions of the home range: temperature 72–82 °F, pH around 6.5, soft water. A peat or fine sand substrate, or a separate peat spawning box or container on the tank floor, provides the spawning medium. Regular harvesting of the peat, followed by controlled drying and re-wetting cycles, is the core of annual killifish keeping and the key to sustained breeding success.
Because the fish is short-lived by nature, maintaining a healthy stock means harvesting and incubating eggs continuously throughout the breeding season. Males can be aggressive toward one another; given the small tank volumes practical for the species, it is worth monitoring for injury and providing visual breaks. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nematolebias papilliferus as Critically Endangered (CR) on 7 November 2018 (assessment reference 130435; taxon ID 187131). The assessment reflects the species' extreme range restriction — it is known only from the Laguna de Maricá and Laguna de Saquarema basins in Rio de Janeiro state — and the severe ongoing degradation of its coastal lagoon and ephemeral pool habitat.
The coastal lowlands of Rio de Janeiro state have been subjected to intense urbanisation, drainage of wetlands for residential and agricultural development, and pollution from the Greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, one of the largest urban conglomerations in South America. Ephemeral pool habitats — the only habitat type Nematolebias papilliferus can use — are particularly vulnerable because they are small, isolated, and easily filled or drained. Each pool that disappears eliminates a breeding population with no possibility of recolonisation from an adjacent intact habitat, as the species cannot cross terrestrial barriers between pool systems.
The combination of critical rarity, high habitat specificity, ongoing habitat loss, and the species' inherently short life cycle (which makes population recovery from disturbance difficult) places Nematolebias papilliferus among the most threatened killifishes in Brazil. Captive maintenance in the killifish hobby, where the peat-spawning technique makes ex situ preservation of eggs straightforward, represents a meaningful safety net for the species pending any formal conservation intervention for its remaining wild habitat.
