Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon flammeus was originally described by G.S. Myers in 1924, with the type locality recorded as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The genus Hyphessobrycon belongs to the family Characidae, the vast and diverse characin family of the New World, and has for much of its history served as a catch-all for small South American tetras not easily placed elsewhere. Phylogenetic work in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has progressively restructured the genus, and Carvalho et al. (2014) produced a detailed redescription of H. flammeus that clarified its morphological characters; the species remains in Hyphessobrycon under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
The valid name as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon flammeus Myers, 1924. Because the species was placed in Hyphessobrycon at original description and has not been transferred to another genus, the authority is not parenthetical. In the hobby it is sold under several names — flame tetra, red tetra, tetra from Rio, and Rio tetra — all of which reference either its colour or its origin, and these names circulate roughly interchangeably in the trade.
The specific epithet flammeus is Latin for flame-coloured or fiery, an apt description of the vivid red suffusing the posterior body and fins of both sexes, and especially brilliant in well-conditioned males. The English common name 'flame tetra' is the most precise and widely accepted, though 'tetra from Rio' (referencing the original type locality) is historically charming and still used in some European hobby literature.
Morphology
The flame tetra is a diminutive, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length — some sources give 1 in SL as a typical adult range, with males tending slightly smaller and more slender than females. The body is relatively deep for its size, oval in outline, with the typical characid complement of a forked tail, an adipose fin, and a moderately large eye set into a moderately pointed head. Dorsal fin rays number 11–12, and the rather long anal fin carries 24–29 rays, a count that contributes to the species' distinctive flamed appearance when the fins are spread.
The colour pattern is the defining feature of the species. The anterior body is silvery to pale golden, often with a pair of dark vertical shoulder bars — the most anterior forming a short, bold mark behind the operculum and the second set just behind it. Behind mid-body the colouration shifts dramatically to bright flame-red or orange-red, suffusing the flanks and extending into the dorsal, anal, ventral, and caudal fins. The anal and dorsal fins typically carry a distinctive black margin or tip that contrasts sharply with the red ground colour. Both sexes show this pattern, but fully conditioned males develop deeper, more saturated red and are notably more intensely coloured during display and spawning. Males also possess small bony hooks — a character noted in studies of the species — on the rays of the anal and pelvic fins, a feature shared with some other Hyphessobrycon species and detectable on careful examination.
Females are recognisably deeper-bodied when gravid, which is one of the simplest means of sexing adults, particularly as the difference in colour intensity can be subtle in young or unconditioned fish. Under bright lighting and with a good diet, both sexes can approach the vivid colouration that gave the species its name.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon flammeus is native to the coastal river basins of southeastern Brazil, principally the stream systems draining into or near the city and state of Rio de Janeiro, with the range extending into parts of São Paulo state. These are small, typically slow-flowing, shallow lowland streams — many less than 19.5 in in depth — set in what was once Atlantic Forest, the highly threatened coastal rainforest biome of eastern Brazil. Water in these streams is characteristically dark-brown or clear, typically soft and slightly acidic, derived from rain falling on deeply weathered Precambrian soils with little buffering capacity.
FishBase notes water parameter ranges of 72–82 °F, pH 5.8–7.8, and a hardness range up to dH 25, reflecting the fact that the species naturally encounters a spectrum of conditions across its coastal-basin range, and that some streams have somewhat more mineralised water than others. Seriously Fish records temperatures of 68–79 °F and a tighter pH range of 5.5–7.5 for the core of its natural occurrence. In the wild the fish inhabits the shallow, vegetated margins of these streams, sheltering among fine-leaved plants, leaf litter, and submerged roots, and feeding in the overlying water column.
Much of the species' original habitat has been lost or severely degraded. The coastal river basins of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states are among the most urbanised and industrialised parts of South America, and the small, slow streams the flame tetra depends on have been straightened, polluted, reduced in flow, or paved over. FishBase notes that the species is thought to be extinct in much of its wild range; Seriously Fish states it has become uncommon to absent across large parts of its original distribution. It is listed on the Brazilian national threatened species list since at least 2004.
Feeding
In the wild, Hyphessobrycon flammeus feeds on small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, and other food items available in the shallow, vegetated stream margins it inhabits. Seriously Fish characterises its diet as small invertebrates, crustaceans, and algae, which is typical of the generalised omnivory common to most small characins in warm-water stream environments where both animal and vegetable items are seasonally or locally abundant.
In the aquarium the flame tetra is an entirely undemanding feeder. It accepts all standard foods — high-quality fine-grained flake and small pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, microworms, and Cyclops, and accepts some green matter grazed from surfaces. Offering a varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate foods brings the fish into better condition and enhances the intensity of the red colouration, which can fade toward orange on a monotonous flake-only diet. Like most small tetras it feeds in the mid-water and upper water column and will take surface food readily. Because it is a small fish with a correspondingly small mouth, food particle size matters: very large flakes should be crumbled or swapped for finer granular foods to ensure all individuals, including juveniles and smaller females, feed efficiently.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon flammeus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, the classic reproductive mode of most small characins. Spawning is triggered by improved feeding, slightly raised temperature, and — commonly reported in the hobby — a modest water change or the addition of softer, slightly acidic conditioned water to a breeding setup, which may mimic the seasonal rainfall conditions that stimulate natural spawning activity.
Males display to females with spread fins and intensified red colouration, actively pursuing females through the spawning vegetation. The species prefers to spawn among fine-leaved plants — Java moss, Cabomba, and synthetic spawning mops are all effective in the aquarium — where the adhesive eggs become entangled among the plant fibres and filaments. Spawning pairs are active and not especially secretive; a conditioned pair placed in a small, well-planted aquarium will usually spawn within a day or two of introduction. The bony hooks on the male's anal and pelvic fins, noted in Carvalho et al.'s redescription, may play a role in maintaining contact during the spawning embrace, a feature found in certain other Hyphessobrycon species.
Breeding
Breeding the flame tetra in captivity is straightforward and one of the reasons the species was so important in establishing the aquarium hobby's early trade in South American tetras. Adults condition readily on varied live and frozen foods, and spawning is easily triggered. FishBase records that females lay 200–330 eggs, which attach to rocks, plants, or debris and hatch within 2–3 days at typical breeding temperatures. Seriously Fish corroborates that the species is a free egg-scatterer laying adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants.
For controlled breeding, a small aquarium of 10 US gal filled with soft, slightly acidic water at 75–79 °F is ideal. Fine-leaved plants or spawning mops placed throughout the tank give the eggs somewhere to adhere after scattering. Because the adults are persistent egg-eaters, breeders either remove the parents immediately after spawning is observed or use a mesh or grid over the tank bottom through which eggs fall beyond the fishes' reach. Incubation at 75–79 °F produces fry in roughly 2–3 days. The tiny larvae are initially immobile and live off their yolk sac for a day or two before becoming free-swimming, at which point they require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Fry grow steadily and begin to show adult colouration within a few weeks, reaching a size suitable for a community aquarium in two to three months.
In the aquarium
The flame tetra is a beginner-friendly, peaceful schooling fish that has been in continuous hobby cultivation for nearly a century. It is best kept in groups of eight or more, which allows the natural schooling behaviour to develop and encourages the males to display their finest colour against one another. A group-kept school provides constant low-level social display and gives observers a good view of the colour contrast between sexes and between dominant and subordinate males.
Water chemistry can follow the species' natural range — soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0, low to moderate hardness) at 72–79 °F is ideal, though the fish tolerates a somewhat wider range than some of its more demanding South American relatives. A planted aquarium with some shaded areas, dark substrate, and gentle filtration shows the colours off best; very bright, hard, alkaline water tends to wash out the red and suppress display behaviour. The species mixes well with other small, peaceful fish of similar size — other small tetras, Corydoras, small rasboras, and pygmy Corydoras or Otocinclus make suitable companions — and is entirely safe with invertebrates, making it suitable for shrimp-keeping community tanks. It is a long-established hobby species with abundant captive-bred stock widely available; it is both economical and ethically preferable to source tank-bred individuals, which carry no wild-collection pressure and are typically hardier and better adapted to a range of tap-water conditions than wild-caught fish would be.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon flammeus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded via FishBase as conducted on 7 November 2018 under criteria B1ab(i,iii). The listing reflects the substantial decline of the species across its naturally restricted range in the coastal lowland stream systems of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, Brazil. These catchments have experienced intense and sustained urbanisation, industrialisation, and agricultural conversion over the past century, resulting in the loss or severe degradation of the small, shallow, vegetated streams the species requires. The flame tetra has been included on Brazil's national list of threatened species since at least 2004.
FishBase characterises the wild population as thought to be extinct across much of its former range; Seriously Fish describes it as uncommon to absent across large areas. The species exists today primarily as a captive population. Its long history in the aquarium hobby — one of the first tetras to be kept and bred on a commercial scale — means that captive populations are large, genetically variable (if not necessarily representing the full original wild diversity), and distributed across collections worldwide. This captive base provides some insurance against total extinction, though it does not substitute for habitat protection of the residual wild populations in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. Aquarists can support the species by purchasing tank-bred stock from reputable sources, avoiding any wild-caught specimens that may still occasionally appear in the trade, and supporting conservation initiatives focused on the Atlantic Forest and its freshwater systems.
