Taxonomy & naming
Notholebias minimus was described by George Sprague Myers in 1942. The original type locality is given as the Serra do Petrópolis region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil (approximately 23°–24° S), placing the species firmly within the Atlantic coastal drainage system of southeastern Brazil. Because the description transferred the taxon from an earlier generic assignment, the authority is presented in parentheses as (Myers, 1942) in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises Notholebias minimus as the valid name.
The genus Notholebias was erected to accommodate a small group of miniature South American annual killifishes previously scattered through other genera. The name combines the Greek notho- ('false' or 'bastard') with the killifish genus name Lebias, reflecting the group's superficial resemblance to, but distinctness from, related taxa. The specific epithet minimus is Latin for 'smallest' or 'least', an apt descriptor for one of the tiniest annual killifishes known. The American Killifish Association records the species under the broader informal grouping of South American annual killies.
No subspecies or formally described population variants are currently recognised under the Catalog of Fishes treatment. Hobbyist collection codes (e.g. locality codes from Seropédica, Anapua, Barra de Tijuca, or Serra do Petrópolis) are used within the AKA and related killifish societies to track provenance of maintained lines, but these do not carry formal taxonomic standing.
Morphology
Notholebias minimus is an exceptionally small fish: FishBase gives a maximum total length of 1.5 in for males, making it one of the smallest annual killies in terms of adult body size. The body form is typical of South American annual killifishes — moderately elongate, laterally compressed, with the dorsal fin positioned well back over the posterior body. The caudal fin is rounded in females and in less colourful males, and may show some fin extension in dominant males.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as is typical for annual killies. Males display vivid patterning in shades of blue, green, red, and orange arranged in a species-specific pattern that functions in both mate choice and male–male competition. Females are substantially plainer — a cryptic brownish or olive body with reduced patterning — which reflects the selective pressures on each sex: females invest heavily in egg production and benefit from camouflage in the substrate where they spawn; males invest in display. The small adult size is consistent with the fast life history of annual killies, which must reach maturity and reproduce within a single wet season.
Habitat
Notholebias minimus is restricted to the Atlantic coastal river basins of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. Known localities include Seropédica, Anapua, Barra de Tijuca, and Serra do Petrópolis — a cluster of lowland sites at relatively low elevation within the broader Atlantic Forest biome. The natural habitat is small temporary pools, swamp margins, and seasonally flooded ground that fill during the wet season and dry out completely during the dry season, isolating the fish until the next rains restore the water body.
Water chemistry at these sites is soft and mildly acidic, consistent with the weathered, organic-rich substrates of the Atlantic Forest lowlands. FishBase records pH 5.5–6.5 and hardness around 10 dH (very soft). The IUCN assessment gives a pH of approximately 5.7 and a conductivity of 130 µS/cm at representative sites, confirming the characteristically dilute, low-conductivity chemistry of these coastal pools. The substrate in annual-killifish pools is typically soft mud, peat, and organic detritus accumulated from leaf litter. This soft bottom layer is central to the species' reproductive biology, providing the burial medium for diapausing eggs during the dry season.
Feeding
Like other small annual killifishes, Notholebias minimus is a microinvertebrate predator in the wild. The tiny gape and the soft-water, leaf-litter pool habitat point toward a diet of zooplankton, small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and other small invertebrates present in seasonal pools. The short growing season of annual killies demands rapid somatic growth and energy investment in reproduction; efficient conversion of abundant invertebrate prey is the ecological strategy.
In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily — newly hatched Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms, and similar items are standard fare. Dried foods are accepted by conditioned individuals but live and frozen prey are preferred to maintain colour, condition, and breeding readiness. Given the very small adult size, all foods must be appropriately fine; any prey item too large to swallow will be ignored or spat out.
Mating
Notholebias minimus is a substrate-spawning annual killifish, and its mating behaviour follows the pattern characteristic of South American annual killies in the subfamily Cynolebiasinae. Males are intensely coloured and compete actively for access to females, displaying lateral and head-on postures to rivals and initiating courtship through a sequence of approach displays directed at females.
When a female is receptive, courtship culminates in a spawning dive: the male presses alongside or partially beneath the female, and the pair plunge together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — burying themselves momentarily as eggs and sperm are released directly into the bottom material. This dive-spawning behaviour is repeated multiple times over a spawning session. Each dive deposits one or a small number of eggs, and over the course of days and weeks a female may produce many eggs that are scattered through the substrate at various depths. The AKA records this as a 'switch spawner' variant — a terminological note for the specific peat-dive mechanics — but the functional biology is standard annual-killifish substrate spawning.
Breeding
The eggs of Notholebias minimus are drought-resistant and undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — that allows them to survive the complete drying of the pool during the dry season. This diapausing-egg strategy is the defining biological adaptation of annual killies. In practice, eggs pass through multiple developmental arrest stages (diapause I, II, and III as described for annual Neotropical killies) before hatching is triggered by re-immersion in water after the dry period. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately 10 months for this species under natural or simulated dry-storage conditions, which is consistent with a spawning peak at the beginning of the wet season and a hatch triggered by the following wet-season rains.
In the aquarium hobby, annual killifish are bred on a peat or coconut-coir substrate that is removed from the tank after a spawning period, gently squeezed to remove most moisture, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at a stable temperature for several months before being re-wetted over a tray to trigger hatching. Fry of small annual killies are correspondingly tiny at hatch and require infusoria or the smallest commercial fry powders as first foods before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Notholebias minimus is a specialist fish kept almost exclusively within the organised killifish hobby. Its small size (1.5 in maximum), specific water chemistry requirements (pH 5.5–6.5, very soft water, 68–72 °F), and annual life history make it unsuitable for a general community aquarium and unsuitable for an aquarist without prior killifish experience. A small, species-only tank — a heavily planted or peat-bottomed aquarium of modest volume — is the correct setting, keeping a small group of one or two males with several females to spread the pressure of male courtship.
Water must be soft, slightly acidic, and kept at the lower end of the tropical range — 68–72 °F is critical; temperatures much above 75 °F shorten lifespan dramatically in annual killies already adapted to the cool microclimate of the Atlantic coastal highlands. Regular, modest water changes with suitably soft, conditioned water are essential. The peat or coir spawning medium should be placed on the aquarium floor and replenished periodically; spent substrate containing eggs is removed, dried, stored, and re-wetted on schedule.
The hobbyist appeal lies in the males' striking coloration, the fascinating biology of the annual life cycle, and the satisfaction of successfully raising fish from dry-stored eggs — a process that has no parallel in mainstream fishkeeping. For experienced killifish enthusiasts, small endemic annuals like Notholebias minimus represent both a conservation contribution (maintaining lines that may be extinct or nearly so in the wild) and an aesthetic reward.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Notholebias minimus as Endangered (EN) based on a 2022 evaluation, with a continuing decreasing population trend. The assessment was carried out by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the Brazilian biodiversity authority. The primary threats listed are residential and commercial development — housing and urban expansion across Rio de Janeiro state — and other ecosystem modifications that degrade or eliminate the small seasonal pools the species depends on.
The species is a single-drainage endemic confined to a small cluster of Atlantic Forest lowland sites around Rio de Janeiro (Seropédica, Anapua, Barra de Tijuca, Serra do Petrópolis). The Atlantic Forest biome is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots, having lost over 85 percent of its original cover, and lowland wetlands within commuting distance of Rio de Janeiro have faced intense development pressure for decades. Small temporary pools in peri-urban landscapes are particularly vulnerable: they are drained for mosquito control, filled for construction, altered by stormwater management, and degraded by runoff from agricultural and residential land.
