The Bukoba lampeye is a small, schooling non-annual killifish of the Lake Victoria basin and the broader East African rift-lake catchments — a fish that lives in papyrus-fringed swamps, drainage ditches, and vegetated river margins from northwestern Tanzania north through Uganda to the shores of Lakes Albert, George, and Edward. Males in good condition glow with an iridescent grass-green to blue-green sheen along the flanks, set against a bronzy-golden back and the characteristic iridescent eye-patch that gives lampeyes their name. Hardy, peaceful, and tolerably easy to breed, it has a small but loyal following among killifish hobbyists who value its quiet beauty and its connection to one of the most biologically rich freshwater systems on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola bukobanus was first described by Ernst Ahl in 1928, with a type locality near Bukoba — the port town on the western shore of Lake Victoria in what is now the Kagera Region of northwestern Tanzania (approximately 31°49'E, 1°20'S). The original description was referred to a broader assemblage of small African lampeyes that was later reorganised; the valid combination Lacustricola bukobanus (Ahl, 1928), with the authority in parentheses indicating the species has been moved from its original genus, is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).

The genus Lacustricola is one of several genera within the tribe Procatopodini (family Poeciliidae, subfamily Aplocheilichthyinae in the broad sense, or treated by some workers as the separate family Procatopodidae). Lampeyes — a vernacular term for the procatopodine killifishes — are united by the conspicuous iridescent or luminous tissue immediately above and around the eye, which functions in schooling cohesion and possibly species recognition. Lacustricola bukobanus belongs to the larger, more widely distributed Victoria-basin lampeyes rather than to any single-lake endemic.

No subspecies or geographic variants have been formally described, although the species spans a wide latitudinal range and populations from Uganda and from the Kagera River catchment show minor differences in colouration intensity that hobbyists sometimes note informally.

Morphology

Lacustricola bukobanus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in total length in the wild; aquarium-kept specimens commonly remain around 1 in. The body profile is streamlined, with a slightly upturned mouth positioned for surface or mid-water feeding, and a rounded to slightly pointed snout. The scales are small and silvery.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males display iridescent grass-green to blue-green flanks, a bronzy-golden-green dorsal surface, and a small but distinct vertical black marking on the operculum. The fins may show faint yellowish or greenish tints. The diagnostic lampeye feature — a patch of iridescent tissue in the upper portion of the iris, often appearing as a vivid blue-green or golden light-spot — is most visible under side-lighting and in alert, actively swimming fish. Females are more cryptically coloured: light grey-brown with a faint reticulated or mottled pattern on the flanks, lacking the male's metallic sheen and opercular marking. Females are also somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The Bukoba lampeye is primarily associated with shallow, heavily vegetated still or slow-moving waters throughout the Lake Victoria drainage. Core habitats include papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) swamps, near-shore marshes, vegetated backwater zones, irrigation ditches, rice paddies, and drainage channels — environments characterised by dense emergent and submergent macrophytes, abundant detritus, and a moderate to high invertebrate load.

The species also occurs in the Victoria Nile River system, including Lakes Kioga, Albert, George, and Edward, and in adjacent river sections draining into the western rift. Easternmost records extend to the Democratic Republic of Congo along the Albertine Rift. This is a fish of permanent water bodies rather than ephemeral pools; it does not experience seasonal desiccation and has no diapause phase in its life history.

Water chemistry across the recorded range is variable but broadly circumneutral to mildly acid. Watters and Nagy (2017) report total dissolved solids of under 10 to 130 ppm (mean 43 ppm), pH 5.2–7.8 (mean 6.8), and temperatures of 66–79 °F (mean approximately 72 °F). FishBase records a temperature range of 72–77 °F and pH 6.5–7.2 for the core of the range. The species is not a blackwater specialist; it occupies clear to lightly turbid water with moderate to high plant density.

Feeding

Like most lampeyes, Lacustricola bukobanus is a micro-predator of zooplankton, small insects, and other invertebrates. In its natural swamp and ditch habitats, the diet consists primarily of small crustaceans (copepods, cladocerans), chironomid larvae and pupae, small aquatic insects, and surface-fallen terrestrial insects — the typical opportunistic invertivore diet of a small surface-oriented killifish.

In the aquarium the fish readily accepts a range of small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, copepods, mosquito larvae, and micro-worms are all taken enthusiastically. Dried foods of appropriate particle size — crushed flake, small pellets — are accepted but benefit from being supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates to maintain colour and condition. Because of its small mouth and body size, food particle dimensions matter; adult-sized frozen bloodworm or Artemia are suitable, but large pellets intended for bigger fish will be ignored or taken awkwardly.

Mating

Lacustricola bukobanus is a non-annual, continuous-spawning lampeye. Unlike the annual killifishes of seasonal savanna pools that produce drought-resistant diapausing eggs, this species inhabits permanent water and spawns over an extended period with no obligate rest phase. Mating is not a single discrete event but a sustained process: pairs or small groups court and spawn repeatedly across weeks and months.

Male courtship consists of lateral displays directed at females, the male angling his body to catch the light and maximise the iridescence of his flanks and eye patch — a behaviour consistent with the hypothesis that the lampeye organ functions as a species- and sex-recognition signal in low-light, vegetation-dense environments. Females assess multiple males, and spawning in a group context likely involves some competition among males for access to receptive females. Aggression between males is present but low-level and rarely results in significant injury, particularly in well-planted tanks with adequate visual breaks.

Breeding

Spawning follows the plant-spawner pattern: eggs are deposited individually or in small numbers among fine-leaved plants, moss, or fibrous spawning mops, to which they adhere weakly. Watters and Nagy (2017) describe the eggs as large relative to body size, with high viability and an incubation period of approximately two weeks at typical aquarium temperatures. Fry are robust at hatching and immediately capable of taking Artemia nauplii as a first food — an advantage compared with some other lampeyes whose fry require infusoria or paramecia for the first days.

In an aquarium setting, pairs can be conditioned on live and frozen foods and introduced to a heavily planted or mop-equipped breeding tank. Removing the spawning mops or plants every week or two and hatching the eggs separately protects the fry from adult predation. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately five to six months of age. The species is not demanding and is considered one of the more accessible lampeyes for hobbyists new to killifish, provided attention is paid to maintaining water quality and avoiding the temperature spikes that can occur in small, shallow tanks.

In the aquarium

The Bukoba lampeye is best displayed in small groups of six or more individuals; being a schooling species, solitary specimens or pairs behave less naturally and show reduced colour intensity. A well-planted aquarium with dark substrate and subdued, indirect lighting brings out the metallic sheen of males most effectively — overly bright lighting washes out the iridescence. Floating plants and submerged fine-leaved vegetation (Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or spawning mops) replicate the papyrus-swamp habitat and provide cover for both adults and fry.

Water chemistry should sit in the soft to moderately hard range, pH 6.5–7.5 and temperature 72–77 °F. Filtration should produce a gentle, not turbulent flow; lampeyes are mid-water to surface fish that prefer quiet to slow currents. The species is peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish of similar size — small tetras, small rasboras, and dwarf corydoras are suitable tankmates. Predatory or fast-moving species will stress or predate them.

Lacustricola bukobanus is regarded by killifish hobbyists as hardy and tolerant, with Watters and Nagy (2017) noting its adaptability across a wide range of water conditions and describing it as sensitive to pollution but otherwise forgiving of keeper variability. It is available sporadically through specialist killifish societies and their fish-distribution networks more often than through general retail channels.

Conservation

FishBase records the IUCN assessment for Lacustricola bukobanus as Least Concern, assessed in January 2016, reflecting the species' broad distribution across the Lake Victoria basin and multiple connected rift lakes. Unlike single-lake endemics or spring-pool dwellers with naturally tiny ranges, the Bukoba lampeye is not immediately imperilled at a range-wide level.

Nevertheless, the Lake Victoria basin is one of the most heavily impacted freshwater systems on Earth. The introduction of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in the 1950s–1980s caused the extinction of hundreds of endemic haplochromine cichlids; while the lampeyes were less severely affected than the cichlids, the collapse of the pelagic food web altered invertebrate communities that small lampeyes depend on. Ongoing threats across the basin include eutrophication from agricultural runoff and sewage, wetland drainage for agriculture and human settlement, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) infestations that degrade shallow near-shore and swamp habitats, and continued pressure from introduced species.

The papyrus swamps and vegetated margins that the Bukoba lampeye occupies are also directly threatened by drainage and conversion to rice cultivation — habitat that overlaps with the species' recorded ecology. While the current LC assessment is appropriate given the species' wide range, the long-term viability of Victoria-basin lampeyes depends on the broader health of the lake and its fringing wetlands, which remain under sustained anthropogenic pressure.
