Lacustricola atripinna was described by the German zoologist Georg Johann Pfeffer in 1896, with material traced to Busisi on Lake Victoria, Tanzania. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid combination as Lacustricola atripinna (Pfeffer, 1896), placing the species in the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The authority is given in parentheses because the name has been moved from whatever genus Pfeffer originally assigned it to into the current genus Lacustricola.
The genus Lacustricola is one of several lampeye genera distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. FishBase flags the species as 'ill-defined', a cautionary note reflecting the fact that the original description was based on material that has not been subject to modern revision. The Lake Victoria basin holds multiple Lacustricola species, and the boundaries between them — particularly in an era of intense taxonomic revision of African killies driven by molecular phylogenetics — remain incompletely drawn. Seegers (1997) treated African lampeyes in detail in his Aqualog monograph on Old World killifishes, which remains a key reference for the group.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.5 in for Lacustricola atripinna, placing it among the smaller members of a genus already characterised by diminutive size. Like other lampeyes, it almost certainly shows the feature that gives the group its name: an iridescent blue-green light-organ patch above and forward of the eye, produced by a specialized region of the iris or periorbital tissue that reflects light strikingly, particularly in males.
Beyond the FishBase size record and the inference of lampeye anatomy from close relatives, detailed morphological description of this species is not available in sources accessible for this account. Males of Lacustricola species typically develop more intense coloration and more pointed or extended unpaired fins than females, and the specific epithet atripinna — from the Latin ater (black) and pinna (fin) — suggests the original description noted particularly dark or blackened fins as a diagnostic character. Habitat

Lake Victoria in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries held an extraordinary diversity of endemic fishes, and its shallows, reed beds, and inlet streams supported lampeyes alongside the famous haplochromine cichlid flock. The species' precise microhabitat preference within the Victoria system is unrecorded, but lampeyes of this size and type are generally benthopelagic inhabitants of shallow, vegetated margins and inlet streams rather than open pelagic water. Feeding
No dietary study of Lacustricola atripinna has been published. Lampeyes as a group are micropredators and insectivores: they feed on small invertebrates, chironomid larvae, zooplankton, and the aquatic and terrestrial insects that fall onto or emerge from the water surface. Their small mouths are adapted to picking individual prey items rather than bulk filter-feeding or macropredation.

The Lake Victoria basin provides stable, permanent water, and nothing in the biology of this species or its close relatives suggests the diapause adaptations (metabolic arrest, desiccation-resistant eggs, population die-off at dry season's end) that characterise annual killifish.
In the broader lampeye guild, males display to females with spread fins and intensified coloration, showcasing the iridescent periorbital patch that the group is named for. The specific mating behaviour of atripinna is undescribed, but in related Lacustricola species, males court females persistently within the water column and along vegetated margins, with the female initiating each individual spawning act by presenting herself near suitable spawning substrate.
Breeding
Lampeyes are non-annual plant-spawners: they deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs individually or in small batches among fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, and filamentous algae, continuing to spawn over extended periods rather than in a single mass-spawning event. Each spawning act yields one or a few eggs, and a healthy pair or group can sustain egg production over many weeks or months. The eggs adhere to plant material by means of fine sticky threads and are left entirely without parental attention.
Incubation period and fry development in atripinna have not been documented, but in related lampeyes eggs typically hatch within ten to fourteen days at tropical temperatures. The fry are small on emergence and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry powder — before graduating to larger live foods as they grow. In the aquarium
Lacustricola atripinna is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby: there are no established strains, no documented captive-breeding populations, and no care literature specific to the species. The broad guidance for lampeyes in general applies by analogy. Related small Lacustricola species are kept and bred by specialist killifish hobbyists, and atripinna would almost certainly thrive under similar conditions.
A small, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, neutral to slightly hard water (reflecting Lake Victoria chemistry — pH around 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness), and a temperature in the range of 72–79 °F would be appropriate. Lampeyes are schooling fish by nature and should be kept in groups of at least six to express natural behaviour and reduce individual stress. Fine-leaved plants such as java moss or hornwort provide both cover and spawning sites. Tankmates should be small and non-aggressive; anything large enough to predate on a 1.5 in fish should be excluded.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lacustricola atripinna as Data Deficient (DD) in 2016, a status that reflects the near-total absence of reliable distribution and population data rather than any confident determination of security or threat. The species is known with certainty only from the Busisi type locality on Lake Victoria, and it is unclear whether that reflects a genuinely narrow endemic range or merely the absence of directed survey effort.
Lake Victoria has been one of the most ecologically devastated large lakes in the world. The introduction of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in the 1950s–1980s caused the extinction of an estimated 200 or more endemic haplochromine cichlid species in the following decades — the largest vertebrate mass extinction in recorded history — and the lake's entire fish community was restructured as a result. Eutrophication from agricultural run-off, proliferation of water hyacinth, and degradation of nearshore habitats compound the pressure on small endemic fishes.
