Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius eggersi was described by the German ichthyologist and killi enthusiast Lothar Seegers in 1982, based on material from a seasonal pool on the Kibiti–Ndundu road near the Ruhoi River, at approximately 07°51'S 38°58'E in Tanzania. The original description appeared in Revue de Zoologie Africaine (volume 96, number 3) under the title 'Nothobranchius eggersi n. sp. aus dem Rufiji-Einzug in Tanzania', accompanied by remarks distinguishing the new species from the superficially similar Nothobranchius melanospilus (Pfeffer, 1896). The holotype is catalogued as MRAC 81-59-P-1, a male measuring 1.5 in standard length.
The species is placed in the subgenus Adiniops within Nothobranchius, a placement consistent with the East and southern African annual killifish radiation that has diversified extensively across the seasonal savanna and coastal floodplain systems of the continent. The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises Nothobranchius eggersi Seegers, 1982 as the valid name.
Two phenotypically distinct colour morphs — informally called the 'blue' and 'red' populations — are recognised in the hobby and are maintained as separate breeding lines. Whether these represent geographic subspecies, incipient species, or phenotypic variation within a single taxon remains to be resolved by a formal systematic study. The IUCN assessment by Nagy and Watters in 2019 treated them as a single species.
Morphology
Males reach approximately 2 in standard length (Seriously Fish); FishBase gives a maximum of 2 in total length. Females are somewhat smaller and markedly drabber, as is typical for the genus. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and a blunt snout characteristic of Nothobranchius.
Male coloration is spectacular and varies between the two recognised morphs. The original description characterises the pattern as a dark red marbled design on a yellowish-green ground colour, particularly vivid in the fins. The blue morph shows a predominantly turquoise-to-cobalt body with reddish or orange scale margins producing a reticulated or mottled effect; the red morph expresses intense brick-red to crimson patterning across much of the body and fins. In both morphs the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are brightly pigmented and often edged with contrasting bands. Females are pale tan or olive-brown with translucent fins, providing effective camouflage in the leaf-litter and mud of their seasonal pools.
Sexual dimorphism is immediately apparent: males are larger, more intensely coloured, and develop vivid fin patterning on reaching maturity, while females remain cryptically coloured throughout life.
Habitat
Nothobranchius eggersi is endemic to the coastal lowland zone of eastern Tanzania, with a documented range spanning the lower Rufiji River system — including the Selous Game Reserve and the Rufiji delta — and extending north into the Ruvu, Wami, and Mligasi drainages. Collection localities recorded by hobbyists include the Ruhoi River, Rufiji River Camp near Utete, Bagamoyo, Chalinze, Kigongo, Kayuni, Makurunge, and the Kimani area, spanning elevations of roughly 1 to 107 metres above sea level.
The species occupies ephemeral freshwater habitats: seasonal pools, shallow swamps, water-filled depressions, and floodplain basins in lowland coastal savanna. These waters exist only during and immediately after the rainy season, drying out completely during the dry months. At the time of collection, water conditions measured by hobbyists in the field have ranged from 85–89 °F, pH 7.18 to 7.60, and very low to moderate dissolved solids (TDS 12–330 ppm), reflecting the warm, relatively neutral to slightly alkaline character of coastal Tanzania's seasonal floodplain waters.
In the aquarium, Seriously Fish recommends a temperature of 68–75 °F, pH 7.0–8.2, and moderate hardness (179–536 ppm). The slightly cooler aquarium range relative to field temperatures helps extend the fish's naturally short lifespan.
Feeding
Nothobranchius eggersi is a micropredator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates available in the seasonal pools it inhabits: zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey items. In the confined and nutrient-rich environment of a temporary pool, small invertebrates such as Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and chironomid midges form the bulk of available prey.
In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. Seriously Fish recommends a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), and bloodworm (chironomid larvae) are all accepted readily. Gut-loaded live foods are particularly valuable for conditioning breeding pairs and bringing fish into peak reproductive condition. Dry foods in small granule or flake form are accepted by acclimatised fish but should not form the sole diet; a rotation of live and frozen invertebrates keeps fish vigorous and well-coloured.
Mating
Like all Nothobranchius, N. eggersi is a substrate-diving annual spawner. Males are intensely competitive and display vigorously toward one another and toward females, using the full palette of their fin patterning in lateral displays. Rival males engage in parallel swimming, fin-spreading, and occasional contact; a dominant male will attempt to monopolise access to females.
Courting males drive females toward the substrate — typically soft mud or peat — and, at the moment of spawning, the pair dives together into the substrate. The male wraps around the female in a tight spawning embrace with both fish partially buried; eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the soft sediment. Each dive deposits one or a small number of eggs, and pairs may spawn repeatedly across multiple sessions. The spawning dive is the defining act of annual killifish reproduction and is the behaviour that places eggs in the protected, desiccation-resistant environment they require to survive the dry season.
Breeding
Eggs are deposited and left buried in the substrate without any parental care. The embryos enter diapause — a state of arrested development — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of their pool for months at a time. In the wild, eggs spend the dry season in the cracked mud or leaf-litter layer and hatch when the rains return and refill the pool. WildNothos data indicates an embryonic development period of 2–3 months in peat moss; Seriously Fish gives a longer range of 5–6 months for egg storage before wetting, recommending that hobbyists store filled peat containers at 70–77 °F and re-wet them after a minimum of 3–4 months.
In the aquarium, the standard technique is to spawn fish over a peat or coconut coir substrate, allow the pair to deposit eggs for 4–6 weeks, then remove and gently squeeze excess moisture from the peat, seal it in a labelled plastic bag, and store it at room temperature for the recommended incubation period. After storage, the peat is flooded with soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching; fry are free-swimming almost immediately and are fed on infusoria and newly hatched Artemia nauplii from the first day. Growth is rapid: fish reach sexual maturity within weeks. The aquarium lifespan of the adult fish is 6–16 months, and wild fish almost certainly live under a year in their seasonal pools.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius eggersi is one of the more accessible Nothobranchius species and a popular entry point into annual killifish keeping. Its modest size (up to 2 in), willingness to eat a variety of foods, and the extraordinary colour of males make it appealing to a broad range of hobbyists. A small, densely planted species tank — a 40- to 60-litre aquarium suits a single trio of one male and two females — provides adequate space and keeps the males' territorial behaviour manageable.
The hobby literature spanning over 40 years in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) documents numerous collection localities, and strain-line identity matters to serious keepers: blue-morph and red-morph lines are maintained separately, and within each morph individual collection-locality strains are often tracked. Mixing colour morphs or locality strains is discouraged among dedicated enthusiasts, as it blurs phenotypic and potentially genetic diversity of conservation value.
Water chemistry should aim for the parameters recorded in the field: neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0–8.0), moderate hardness, and a temperature of 68–75 °F. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is ideal — as the species is not adapted to strong currents. A peat or coir spawning mop or tray of fine substrate placed on the tank floor gives the pair a designated spawning site. The short lifespan of annual killifish means that dedicated breeders maintain continuous egg-storage batches to preserve lines between adult generations.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment by Nagy and Watters (2019, assessment date 31 October 2018) places Nothobranchius eggersi in the Least Concern (LC) category, the same outcome as the previous assessment by Hanssens and Snoeks in 2006. The assessment reflects a species that is currently considered stable across its range, with no evidence of major population declines meeting the threshold for a threatened category.
Nevertheless, the species' range is narrow. It is endemic to a coastal strip of eastern Tanzania, confined to the lower Rufiji, Ruvu, Wami, and Mligasi drainages, and dependent entirely on ephemeral floodplain habitats that are intrinsically vulnerable. Conversion of seasonal floodplains to irrigated agriculture, drainage of coastal wetlands, and deforestation of the catchments that sustain seasonal flooding all threaten the pool habitats on which the species depends. The Selous Game Reserve — now renamed Nyerere National Park — provides some protection for part of the Rufiji drainage population, but populations in the Ruvu, Wami, and Mligasi systems are less well protected.
The species' popularity in the killifish hobby has a positive side: active captive breeding programmes in killifish clubs worldwide, particularly via the American Killifish Association, maintain diverse locality lines as an ex-situ safety net. Regular field collection by hobbyists has also produced detailed geographic data on population distribution that has value for conservation monitoring.
