Nothobranchius flammicomantis is a small annual killifish from the coastal lowlands of Tanzania, where it completes its entire life cycle within the brief window between seasonal rains. Males carry vivid coloration typical of the genus — the specific epithet alludes to a fiery or flame-like crest or mane — and the species has attracted attention from killifish specialists partly for that display and partly because of how narrowly it is confined: it is known from only a handful of seasonal pools in the Ruvu River drainage, a restricted range that contributed to its IUCN Vulnerable assessment in 2018. Like all Nothobranchius, its drought-resistant eggs lie buried in mud through the dry season and hatch when the rains return, a strategy that lets the species persist in ephemeral habitats where no permanent-water fish can survive.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius flammicomantis was described by H. O. Berkenkamp and V. Etzel in 1999. The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Nothobranchius flammicomantis Berkenkamp & Etzel, 1999. The species is classified in FishBase under ID 60324.

The specific epithet is a compound Latin construction: flamma (flame) combined with a form of comantis or coma (mane, crest, or flowing hair), yielding a meaning roughly equivalent to 'flame-maned' or 'fire-crested' — a reference to the vivid coloration of the male. This naming convention is common in Nothobranchius, where species epithetss frequently evoke the males' brilliant hues.

Within the genus, N. flammicomantis belongs to the diverse East African radiation of annual Nothobranchius species associated with coastal-drainage seasonal pools. The species' closest relatives and precise phylogenetic position within the genus have not been resolved in the primary literature available for this profile.

Morphology

Nothobranchius flammicomantis is a compact killifish reaching a recorded maximum standard length of 2 in (FishBase). The body plan is typical of the genus: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded head, upturned mouth, and relatively large eyes suited to hunting invertebrate prey in shallow, turbid seasonal pools.

Males display the intense coloration that the species epithet evokes — vivid body colours with flank scales that carry iridescent or flame-toned suffusion. Females, as in all Nothobranchius, are cryptically coloured: plain olivaceous or buff-brown, often with faint mottling. This strong sexual dichromatism is the rule across the genus and is driven by sexual selection in a reproductive system where males compete intensely for brief mating opportunities before the pool dries.

The finnage of males is typically more elaborate and coloured than that of females. Specific details of the scale count, fin-ray formula, and precise colour pattern are documented in the original 1999 description by Berkenkamp and Etzel.

Habitat

Nothobranchius flammicomantis is endemic to coastal Tanzania and is currently known from seasonal pools within the Ruvu River drainage. The Ruvu (also called the Kingani) rises in the Uluguru Mountains and flows eastward to meet the Indian Ocean near Dar es Salaam; its lower drainage encompasses low-lying floodplain areas where isolated seasonal pools form during the long rains and dry out completely during the dry season.

The species inhabits small, shallow, temporary pools — typically on clay or loam soils with a soft organic substrate of mud and decomposing leaf litter. These pools fill with the onset of the rains, persist for weeks to a few months, and then evaporate entirely, leaving the buried eggs as the only surviving stage of the population. Water in such pools is typically soft and warm, with temperatures around 77–79 °F; the killi.co.uk strain data record a pH of approximately 7.5 and a hardness of around 3 dH for the Kisaki collection locality.

Because the species is known from very few localities and its habitat is by nature ephemeral and localised, the wild population is considered small and fragmented. Expansion of the known range remains possible with targeted survey effort in suitable coastal-lowland habitats in Tanzania.

Feeding

In the wild, Nothobranchius flammicomantis feeds primarily on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other zooplankton that colonise seasonal pools rapidly after flooding. The upturned mouth is adapted for surface and mid-water hunting rather than benthic foraging.

In the aquarium, the species readily accepts a wide range of live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii and adults, Tubifex, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and mosquito larvae are all taken enthusiastically. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals but live and frozen items elicit stronger feeding responses and better condition in breeding fish. As is general for small annual killies, regular high-quality feeding supports faster growth, brighter coloration in males, and better egg production in females.

Mating

Nothobranchius flammicomantis breeds in the manner common to all annual Nothobranchius: males are vigorously polygamous and compete for access to females with displays of erect fins and lateral body posture, showing off their vivid coloration. Courtship is rapid and intense. Once a female accepts a male, the pair engage in a spawning embrace in which the male curves around the female and both fish drive downward into the soft substrate.

Spawning occurs within or immediately above the substrate surface: the pair press together, the female releases one or a few eggs, and the male simultaneously releases sperm directly into the substrate around the eggs. The eggs are immediately buried or driven into the mud by the force of the dive. There is no further parental involvement; the male resumes display behaviour and will court additional females. This substrate-diving mode is the defining characteristic of annual Nothobranchius reproduction and is entirely different from the plant-spawning or bubble-nest strategies of non-annual killifishes.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius flammicomantis are drought-resistant, hard-chorioned structures that enter developmental diapause after being buried in the substrate. In nature, these eggs remain in the dried mud of the pool bed through the dry season — weeks to several months depending on local rainfall patterns — and resume development when the rains return and rewet the substrate. This diapause strategy allows the species to persist through the complete annual desiccation of its habitat; the eggs can survive dry-season soil temperatures and desiccation that would kill any other life stage.

In the aquarium, breeding N. flammicomantis follows a well-established killifish-hobby protocol. A pair or trio (one male, one or two females) is placed in a tank with a layer of peat moss or coconut coir as the spawning medium; the fish dive and deposit eggs in this substrate over a period of days to weeks. The peat is then squeezed out, lightly dried until barely moist, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored at room temperature for a diapause period — typically six to ten weeks for this species, though optimal duration for N. flammicomantis should be confirmed by breeders with experience of the specific strain. After the diapause period, the peat is re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water, and fry should emerge within hours to a day or two.

Fry are small but immediately free-swimming and capable of taking Artemia nauplii or micro-worm from the first day. Growth is rapid. The fish reach sexual maturity in a matter of weeks under warm conditions; the full wild life cycle — from hatching to spawning to death of the adults — can occur within three to four months, which is why this group is called annual killies.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius flammicomantis is a specialist's fish that rewards the keeper who provides appropriate conditions and understands the annual killifish life cycle. Because wild fish live for only a few months, the aquarium experience is correspondingly compressed: purchases are typically young adult fish already approaching peak colour, and the hobbyist's primary goals are enjoying the males' display and producing eggs for the next generation.

The species is kept in small, well-covered aquaria — 5.5–10 US gal is sufficient for a breeding group. A layer of peat, coconut coir, or similar soft organic spawning medium on the tank floor is essential, both for spawning and for the fish's behavioural wellbeing. Water at approximately 77–79 °F with a moderate to neutral pH (around 7–7.5 per hobby records) suits the Kisaki strain. Filtration should be gentle to avoid disturbing the spawning substrate and to avoid stressing the fish with strong current; a small air-driven sponge filter is appropriate. Males can be aggressive toward one another in confined space; a ratio of one male to one or two females is recommended.

The species is not well suited to general community aquaria: it is small, it requires the seasonal peat-cycle management that most community fishkeepers do not want to provide, and it is sensitive to competition from robust tankmates. It is best maintained by dedicated annual-killifish enthusiasts who circulate eggs through the killifish-society network — keeping the captive gene pool alive is a genuine conservation contribution given this species' restricted and threatened wild range.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius flammicomantis as Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii) in October 2018 (assessment ID 47186080; taxon ID 60382). The B1 criterion indicates a restricted range — estimated extent of occurrence below the Vulnerable threshold — combined with subcriterion b(iii), meaning that the quality and area of occupied habitat is inferred to be declining. This assessment directly reflects the species' narrow endemic range in the Ruvu River coastal drainage of Tanzania and its dependence on ephemeral seasonal pools that are acutely sensitive to land-use change.

The primary threats are habitat loss and water extraction. The coastal lowlands around the lower Ruvu drainage are subject to agricultural expansion, deforestation, and infrastructure development. Loss of forest cover changes the hydrology of the catchment, shortening the period that seasonal pools hold water and in some cases preventing pools from forming at all. Water extraction for irrigation can similarly reduce pool permanence. Because the species is known from only a few localities, the loss or permanent alteration of even a single pool system could eliminate a significant fraction of the wild population.

A prior assessment (2006) listed the species as Vulnerable under criterion D2 — small population size — which, combined with the later B1 assessment, confirms that both range restriction and habitat trend have been recognised as concerns across multiple evaluation cycles. Hobbyist maintenance of viable captive populations through egg exchange within killifish societies offers a meaningful ex-situ safety net, though it is not a substitute for protecting the remaining seasonal pool habitats in coastal Tanzania.
