Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius furzeri was described by the South African ichthyologist Robin Haig Jubb in 1971 from specimens collected in the Gonarezhou (then Gona Re Zhou) National Park in southeastern Zimbabwe. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Nothobranchius furzeri Jubb, 1971, placing the species within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes — in the order Cyprinodontiformes. The type locality lies at approximately 722 ft elevation in the Save–Runde basin, within the arid lowlands that drain toward the Mozambique Channel.
The genus name Nothobranchius blends the Greek nothos ('spurious' or 'irregular') with branchia ('gills'), a reference to the reduced or anomalous gill arches noted in early specimens. The specific epithet furzeri honours the British ichthyologist and collector P. G. Furzer, who provided material for Jubb's original description. The common name 'turquoise killifish' describes the iridescent blue-green scaling that covers the flanks of adult males, giving them one of the most instantly recognisable colour patterns in the annual killifish hobby.
Morphology
Nothobranchius furzeri is a compact, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum of 2.5 in total length (FishBase), with most wild individuals somewhat smaller; sexual maturity is reached at around 1.5 in SL. The body is deep-bellied and moderately robust for its length — a build typical of Nothobranchius, reflecting the musculature needed to force spawning dives into compacted substrate.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males display an intense iridescent turquoise-blue ground colour on the flanks and back, overlaid with red to brick-red mottling or scaling on the posterior body; the caudal fin is brilliantly patterned with red rays and a contrasting black or yellow submarginal band, varying between collection localities and captive strains. The face and operculum carry the same blue-green iridescence. Females and juveniles are cryptic, showing a pale olive-brown body with little patterning — a common pattern in Nothobranchius that minimises predator attention when males are absent or inactive. Fins in males are rounded and unpaired, with the dorsal and anal fins extending well back along the caudal peduncle.
Habitat
The native range of N. furzeri is narrow: the species is known from ephemeral floodplain pools in the lowlands of southern Zimbabwe and extreme southern Mozambique, with the type locality in Gonarezhou National Park. The distribution encompasses the lower Save (Sabi) and Runde (Lundi) river floodplains at low elevation — an arid, seasonally extreme savanna landscape where annual rainfall is concentrated into a short wet season and standing surface water is absent for much of the year.
The habitats are shallow, temporary water-filled depressions and floodplain pools that form when rains arrive, persist for weeks to a few months, and then desiccate completely. Water chemistry shifts as pools concentrate through evaporation, but during the peak wet-season phase the water is typically soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.0, FishBase), and warm — surface temperatures of 73–86 °F are recorded (FishBase). The substrate is fine organic mud and silt that retains moisture well below the surface long after the water layer has evaporated, a property critical to egg survival during diapause.
Feeding
In the wild, N. furzeri is a micropredator, targeting small invertebrates associated with the pools it inhabits: zooplankton (daphnia, ostracods), larval chironomids (bloodworm), small aquatic insects, and whatever arthropods fall onto the water surface. The productivity of temporary savanna pools during the wet season is high — cyanobacteria and algae bloom rapidly, driving invertebrate population explosions that the killifish exploits. The diet must sustain rapid growth from hatch to sexual maturity within a few weeks, so prey density is a key ecological driver.
In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen daphnia, artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similarly sized invertebrate foods readily. Suitably sized frozen or freeze-dried foods are taken. Feeding multiple times daily with small, varied portions matches the opportunistic foraging pace of a short-lived fish that needs to pack growth and reproduction into a compressed window.
Mating
Nothobranchius furzeri is a substrate-spawning annual killifish in which mating is inseparable from the act of egg deposition in the mud. Males are intensely competitive, establishing dominance hierarchies and displaying vigorously to females and rival males through flared fins and lateral body displays that show off their turquoise-and-red colouration to maximum effect. Courting males pursue females persistently, driving them toward the substrate.
Spawning occurs as a diving manoeuvre: the male positions himself alongside the female and the pair press their ventral surfaces together before diving side by side into soft mud or peat, driving their bodies into the substrate. Eggs are expelled and fertilised simultaneously within the substrate rather than in the open water column. The pair resurface, rest briefly, and then repeat — a single spawning session over hours produces multiple egg deposits scattered through the substrate layer. This substrate-diving behaviour is the definitive characteristic of annual Nothobranchius spawning and differs fundamentally from the plant-spawning strategy of non-annual killies.
Breeding
The eggs buried in the pool substrate are resistant to desiccation and pass through a period of arrested development — diapause — as the pool dries and the surrounding soil hardens. The embryos can survive months of complete dryness at ambient savanna temperatures, waiting in a developmental pause for the cue that signals the return of water. Hatching is triggered when rains re-flood the substrate, typically at the onset of the next wet season. According to Reichard & Polacik (2019), the median natural lifespan of the adult fish is under six months, with a documented maximum of roughly nine to ten months — the entire productive adult life of a wild individual fits within a single wet season.
In the aquarium hobby, the annual cycle is replicated by collecting spawning substrate (peat fibre, coir, or a commercial spawning medium), allowing eggs to accumulate over several weeks of daily or weekly spawning sessions, then gently drying the medium to ambient room humidity and storing it in a sealed bag or container for a diapause period — typically five to six months, though viable hatching can occur earlier. Re-wetting the substrate with soft, slightly warm water triggers mass hatching, often within hours to days. Fry are large relative to most killifish eggs and can accept freshly hatched artemia nauplii as a first food almost immediately. Sexual maturity is reached extremely rapidly — within three weeks post-hatch under warm, well-fed conditions (Seriously Fish), reflecting the evolutionary pressure to reproduce before the pool disappears.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius furzeri is a rewarding but short-lived aquarium fish suited to hobbyists who are comfortable with the annual breeding cycle and the expectation that adults will live for only a few months. A modest tank of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a trio (one male, two females); the small size and brief lifespan make extravagant space unnecessary, though multiple males will fight unless the tank is large enough to subdivide visually with plants and spawning mops.
Water should be soft to moderately hard and near-neutral (pH 6.5–7.0), maintained at 75–82 °F. Because the species must spawn continuously to make the best use of its short life, a layer of peat fibre or a commercial spawning substrate at least 2 in deep should be provided on the tank bottom or in a separate spawning container placed in the tank. Eggs should be harvested regularly, dried, and stored as described above. Males are vigorous in their attentions and females benefit from visual cover; a ratio of two or three females per male distributes the spawning load. The species is not suited to community tanks with active or large tankmates — its small size and non-confrontational nature outside of male rivalry make it vulnerable. Other small, quiet species can coexist in a large enough vessel, but a species tank is optimal.
Captive-bred strains vary considerably in colour and pattern from locality to locality, and the hobby maintains several named geographic forms. Wild-caught imports are now rare given the species' restricted and protected type locality in Gonarezhou National Park.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius furzeri as Least Concern (LC) in 2018 (Watters & Nagy, assessors), reflecting the species' broad occurrence across the seasonal floodplains of southern Zimbabwe and adjacent Mozambique and the absence of evidence for rapid, range-wide population decline. The assessment notes that the species is not subject to significant targeted exploitation and that its type locality falls within Gonarezhou National Park, providing a degree of formal protection for at least the core of the range.
Nevertheless, the species' ecology makes it inherently sensitive to hydrological change. Ephemeral savanna pools are vulnerable to groundwater abstraction, drainage for cattle or crop irrigation, and changes in rainfall patterns that alter the timing or duration of the wet season. Egg survival during diapause requires the subsurface mud layer to remain at appropriate temperatures and humidity; prolonged extreme heat or disruption of the substrate through tillage or heavy grazing would reduce recruitment. The narrow endemic range — largely confined to the Save–Runde basin lowlands — limits the population's resilience to regional disturbance. The species' prominence as an ageing-research model organism has prompted captive-colony work at several research institutions globally, providing a genetic reserve independent of wild fluctuations.
