Nothobranchius kadleci is a brilliantly coloured annual killifish endemic to the seasonal floodplains of central coastal Mozambique, where it inhabits ephemeral pools and marshes draining into the Save, Gorongosa, Pungwe, and Zangue river systems. Like all members of its genus, it completes its entire life cycle — birth, growth, reproduction, and death — within a single wet season, surviving the annual dry season only as drought-resistant embryos buried in the pool substrate. Described in 2012 and assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened, it is among the seasonal killifish whose specialised habitat is increasingly fragmented by land-use change across coastal East Africa.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius kadleci was described by Stefano Valdesalici in 2012. The valid combination, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), is Nothobranchius kadleci Valdesalici, 2012. The genus Nothobranchius belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African annual killifishes, and sits within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The species was formally distinguished from the superficially similar N. furzeri — the turquoise killifish, among the most intensively studied vertebrates for ageing research — by meristic and morphometric characters. Key diagnostic features include a smaller dorsal fin depth: 17.9–31.0% of standard length in males of N. kadleci versus 27.4–37.7% SL in N. furzeri males. Dorsal-fin ray count is 13–14 and anal-fin ray count 13–16.

The species epithet honours the collector or describer's associate; the name carries no reference to the fish's appearance or distribution. The common name Gorongosa Killifish links it to the Gorongosa drainage, one of its principal river systems in central Mozambique.

Morphology

Nothobranchius kadleci is a small, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of approximately 2 in standard length (roughly 2 in), though most wild specimens are smaller. FishBase records a typical size of 1.5 in SL. Males are substantially more vivid in coloration than females and are the primary attractant for hobbyists: they display the intense red, orange, blue, and iridescent patterning characteristic of the genus Nothobranchius, with the specific colour pattern helping distinguish them from close congeners in overlapping drainages.

Females are, as in all Nothobranchius, cryptically coloured — predominantly brownish or olive — a camouflage adaptation consistent with the female's role in egg deposition in substrate while males display. The caudal fin in males carries the elaborate banding or marginal coloration typical of the genus. Like other annual killifish, the body is moderately robust relative to its small size, an adaptation to rapid growth in the short window between pool-filling and dry-season mortality.

Habitat

Nothobranchius kadleci is endemic to central coastal Mozambique, distributed north of the Save River across the Save, Gorongosa, Pungwe, and Zangue drainages. It occupies seasonal freshwater pools and marshes — low-lying basins that fill with the onset of the rainy season and dry out completely in the dry months. These are not permanent water bodies; the fish's entire existence is calibrated to a temporary, eutrophic, often turbid aquatic environment that exists for weeks to months each year.

Water chemistry in these habitats is soft and warm. Field data from WildNothos records a temperature range of 82–101 °F and conductivity of 68–300 µS — indicative of low-to-moderate dissolved solids in soft, dilute savanna-pool water. FishBase notes a pH of approximately 8 in some sampled localities. The pools are typically shallow, sun-exposed, and rich in organic detritus — the same substrate into which the fish spawns its diapausing eggs.

The species does not occur in permanent rivers or lakes. Its distributional range is tightly tied to the coastal lowland drainage systems of central Mozambique, making it one of many Nothobranchius species with a narrow, single-country endemic range.

Feeding

In the wild, Nothobranchius kadleci feeds on whatever invertebrate prey is available in the seasonal pool — primarily aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and worms that colonise and proliferate rapidly when the pools fill. Annual killifish are opportunistic carnivores and must reach sexual maturity quickly, so energy intake is high relative to body size during the active season.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, and small tubifex. Dry prepared foods are accepted by many captive fish. Feeding a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supports full colouration in males and ensures females remain in condition for repeated spawning. Overfeeding should be avoided in small tanks where water quality can deteriorate rapidly.

Mating

Nothobranchius kadleci is an annual species and follows the peat-spawning reproductive mode universal in the genus. Males are intensely coloured and display to females through lateral spreads of fins and body-turning behaviour. Competition among males for access to females can be vigorous, and in confined aquarium conditions dominant males may harass subordinates.

In the wild, courtship and spawning take place across the wet season as pools fill and persist. The male courts the female at the substrate surface — the soft, organic-rich mud or detritus that carpets the pool floor. Each spawning act involves a brief physical clasp, after which a single egg is driven into the substrate. Spawning continues repeatedly over days and weeks throughout the wet season, distributing hundreds of eggs across the substrate in a scattered, non-aggregated pattern. This spreads reproductive investment across the substrate and reduces the catastrophic egg loss that would result from a single concentrated nest site drying before hatching can occur.

Breeding

The defining feature of Nothobranchius kadleci's reproduction is embryonic diapause. Eggs deposited in the substrate are drought-resistant; as the pool dries and temperatures rise, the embryos suspend development and enter arrested diapause — a state of metabolic dormancy that allows the eggs to survive the dry season in the dry mud. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch, and the new generation of fry must grow to adulthood, colour up, spawn, and die within a single wet season.

In the aquarium, the standard killifish peat-moss technique replicates this cycle. A container of moistened peat or coconut coir is placed in the tank as a spawning medium; the fish readily dive into and spawn within it. After several weeks of conditioning, the peat is removed, gently pressed to remove excess water, and sealed in a plastic bag labelled with the date. The eggs incubate in the slightly damp peat at room temperature for approximately 5–7 months — the dry-season equivalent. After this diapause period, the peat is placed in a shallow dish and soft, slightly acidic water is added; hatching typically occurs within hours to a day or two.

Fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, commercial fry powder, or vinegar eels for the first days before graduating to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is rapid; juveniles begin to sex out and show male coloration within weeks. Adults are short-lived in captivity as in the wild — most individuals are spent within 12–18 months, and maintaining the colony requires ongoing peat batches at offset intervals.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius kadleci is a rewarding species for the specialist killifish keeper, though it demands a different approach from a long-lived community fish. The tanks used are typically small — 10–15 US gal is ample for a pair or a trio — with a substrate of soft peat or coir into which the fish will spawn. Water should be soft and warm, consistent with the habitat chemistry: a temperature in the 75–82 °F range and slightly soft, slightly acidic to neutral water suits the species well in captivity, though it tolerates a modest pH range.

Not recommended for community aquaria: males spar, and the fish are small enough to be threatened by larger tankmates. Species tanks with one male and one or two females, or small groups in a larger planted setup, work best. The tank need not be heavily decorated — annual killifish are not shy — but floating plants and surface cover reduce stress and reflect the shaded marginal vegetation of their natural pools.

The keepability of this and other Nothobranchius species depends substantially on hobbyist networks that maintain and exchange peat-stored egg batches. Because the adults die each season, the species survives in the hobby only as long as keepers actively cycle their breeding stock. The American Killifish Association and regional killifish clubs maintain studbooks and egg exchanges for Nothobranchius species, including N. kadleci.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius kadleci as Near Threatened (NT) in 2019, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). This designation reflects a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy in central coastal Mozambique, combined with an observed or projected decline in the quality of its seasonal pool habitat. The specific threat driving the assessment is degradation and loss of the ephemeral wetland habitats the species depends on — through agricultural expansion, drainage of seasonal floodplains, and broader land-use change across the coastal lowlands of Mozambique.

The conservation predicament of N. kadleci mirrors a systemic problem across the genus. A systematic assessment of 94 Nothobranchius species found that 72% are threatened with extinction — one of the highest threat rates of any vertebrate genus. Annual killifish are acutely vulnerable because their entire wild populations exist only as eggs in the ground during the dry season: a single disturbance event — a drainage project, an agricultural conversion, a prolonged dry year drying pools before spawning completes — can eliminate a local population with no possibility of recolonisation from a nearby permanent water body.

Captive maintenance in the killifish hobby serves a genuine ex-situ role for this and related species: properly managed peat batches stored by dedicated keepers represent a genetic repository that can, in principle, be used in reintroduction efforts if wild populations decline further. Continued monitoring of the Save and Gorongosa drainages and protection of seasonal wetland areas within the Gorongosa National Park buffer zone are the most direct conservation interventions available for this species.
