Nothobranchius ivanovae is a small annual killifish endemic to the Katuma River drainage of western Tanzania, where it inhabits a broad marshland system stretching roughly 50 kilometres between the villages of Kabungo and Sibwesa. Like all members of its genus, it completes its entire life cycle within a single wet season: adults spawn by driving eggs into the soft substrate of temporary pools, the fish die when the pools dry out, and embryos survive the dry season buried in the mud in a state of suspended development known as diapause, hatching when rains return the following year. Described in 2012 and assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 2018, it is threatened by agricultural encroachment on its wetland habitat and by hydrological changes to the seasonal pools on which its survival depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius ivanovae was described in 2012 by Stefano Valdesalici from specimens collected at a pond on the left side of the road running from Kabungo to Iloba, in the Karira stream system within the Katuma River drainage of western Tanzania (type locality coordinates: 06°22.061' S, 30°56.161' E). The species was placed in the genus Nothobranchius, which belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Nothobranchius ivanovae Valdesalici, 2012. The species epithet honours Iva Ivanova, a Bulgarian aquarist and collector who discovered the population and brought it to scientific attention. The name is therefore an eponym, and its feminine form reflects the gender of the person honoured. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Nothobranchius ivanovae is a small, sexually dichromatic killifish. Males reach a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in (roughly 2 in SL); females are noticeably smaller, typically not exceeding about 1.5 in SL. These proportions are typical for the genus, in which females run measurably smaller and drabber than males.

As with all Nothobranchius, the sexes are strikingly different in colouration. Males display the intense, iridescent colour patterning characteristic of the genus — typically involving vivid scales with contrasting borders and a brightly patterned caudal fin. Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown tones without the ornamental patterning, an adaptation that reduces predation risk during the breeding season when females spend time near or in the substrate. The body is relatively deep and compressed, with a rounded caudal fin in males that is often the most elaborately coloured part of the fish.

Habitat

This species is restricted to the Katuma River drainage in the Rukwa region of western Tanzania. Its known range is a large marshy system covering approximately 50 kilometres between Kabungo and Sibwesa — a network of seasonal and semi-permanent pools and swampy ground typical of the East African savanna-woodland mosaic. The type locality is a small pond beside a rural road, illustrating how marginal and easily overlooked the microhabitats of annual killies can be.

Water chemistry data recorded at the type locality by WildNothos collectors indicates conditions of approximately 77 °F, pH 7.5, and hardness around 5 dGH — warm, very soft, and near-neutral to slightly alkaline. These are typical of shallow, sun-exposed savanna pools that receive seasonal rainfall and lose water rapidly through evaporation and infiltration. The pools are not permanently flooded; they form during the wet season and dry out completely, sometimes in a matter of weeks, forcing the fish to complete their entire life cycle before the water disappears.

Feeding

Nothobranchius ivanovae is insectivorous, as is characteristic of the genus. In the wild, fish in temporary savanna pools feed opportunistically on invertebrates — small aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and surface-fallen terrestrial invertebrates — exploiting the bloom of small-bodied prey that follows the seasonal inundation of the pools.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: Artemia nauplii and adults, small Daphnia, Chironomus (bloodworm), and other meaty invertebrate-based foods are appropriate staples. Like most Nothobranchius, it has a relatively fast metabolism suited to a short-lived annual life cycle and benefits from frequent, varied feeding.

Mating

Nothobranchius ivanovae is an annual killifish, and its mating behaviour is organised entirely around the ephemeral nature of its habitat. Males are intensely territorial and display to one another and to females using their bright colouration and spread fins. Rival males may engage in physical combat if neither retreats, but displays typically resolve disputes before contact.

Spawning is initiated by the male courting the female through persistent lateral displays, driving her toward the substrate — most often soft mud, detritus, or leaf litter at the bottom of the pool. Once the female is receptive, the pair press together side by side, the male wrapping his body around hers, and they dive simultaneously into the soft substrate where the female deposits a single egg per embrace that the male fertilises. This substrate-diving spawning is the defining behaviour of the genus and separates annual egg-buriers from plant-spawning or mouthbrooding killies.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius ivanovae are buried in the substrate and left entirely without parental care. Once the pool dries out and the adult fish perish, the eggs enter a period of embryonic diapause — a state of arrested development in which metabolism is dramatically reduced and the embryo can survive months of complete desiccation in the cracked mud. When rains return and re-flood the site, the change in osmotic conditions triggers resumption of development and hatching, often within hours to days of re-wetting.

In the aquarium, this cycle is reproduced using a peat moss or coconut coir spawning medium: the pair spawn into the medium over several weeks, after which the medium is removed, gently pressed to remove excess moisture, sealed in a bag or container, and stored at room temperature for the diapause period. WildNothos data for this species indicates a recommended incubation period of 3 to 6 months at room temperature before re-wetting. When the time comes, the medium is placed in a shallow tray and soft water added; fry typically begin hatching within hours. Fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods such as Artemia nauplii or microworm. Adults are short-lived even in captivity, typically living less than 18 months, and the annual cycle should be managed to ensure continuity of the strain.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius ivanovae is a specialist fish suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than general community aquarists. It is best kept in small, species-only setups: a pair or a harem of one male and two or three females is typical. Males can be aggressive toward one another, so multiple males require a well-planted tank with sufficient visual barriers or should be kept one per tank.

A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and floating or fine-leaved plants create the conditions closest to its natural habitat and reduce stress. Water should be soft (around 5 dGH or less) and near-neutral (pH 7.0–7.5), maintained at 72–79 °F. A peat or coir spawning container placed on the substrate is essential for successful breeding. The species is sensitive to water quality deterioration — regular small water changes are important, and the tank should be kept away from cold draughts that could cause rapid temperature drops.

Because N. ivanovae is a single-locality endemic assessed as Vulnerable, hobbyist populations in captivity carry some conservation value. Killifish clubs and the American Killifish Association maintain studbook-style records for threatened Nothobranchius species; responsible keepers are encouraged to source fish from established captive lines and to share eggs with other hobbyists rather than relying on repeated wild collection.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius ivanovae as Vulnerable (VU) in December 2018. The primary threats identified are agricultural and aquacultural expansion and natural system modifications — activities that drain, divert, or degrade the seasonal wetlands and marshy pools that this species requires. Because the fish is endemic to a single, geographically restricted drainage system, any large-scale alteration to the hydrology of the Katuma River basin has the potential to eliminate populations with no possibility of recolonisation from elsewhere.

The temporary pool habitats on which annual killies depend are among the most ecologically overlooked wetland types in Africa. They are frequently drained for pasture improvement or irrigated agriculture, treated with pesticides, or simply filled during road construction — none of which are tracked in national conservation statistics as wetland loss in the way that permanent lakes and rivers are. The Katuma drainage is within the broader Lake Rukwa catchment in Tanzania's Songwe and Rukwa regions, an area under increasing agricultural pressure.

Conservation actions noted by the IUCN assessment include land and water protection and site management. Captive maintenance by killifish hobbyists through organisations such as the American Killifish Association provides a practical safety net for the species' genetic diversity while in-situ protection measures are developed. Because the entire known range is confined to a 50-kilometre marshy corridor, a single severe drought, a road-drainage project, or an agribusiness development could extirpate the species from the wild.
