Taxonomy & naming
Lacustricola centralis was described by Lothar Seegers in 1996, in his monograph 'The Fishes of the Lake Rukwa Drainage' (Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, vol. 278), with figures 192–198 illustrating the species. The type locality is Bukoba, in northwestern Tanzania on the southwestern shore of Lake Victoria. The authority is therefore rendered as (Seegers, 1996) in accordance with Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the governing authority for valid names.
The genus Lacustricola was erected for a group of small African lampeyes within the family Procatopodidae (order Cyprinodontiformes) characterised by adhesive eggs — distinguishing them from free-spawning or substrate-burying lampeye genera. The genus name combines the Latin lacus (lake) and -cola (dweller), alluding to the lacustrine and lake-margin habitats favoured by its members. The specific epithet centralis (Latin for 'central') reflects the broadly central East African distribution, spanning Tanzania and Rwanda.
FishBase places the species in Procatopodidae alongside other African lampeyes such as Procatopus and Aplocheilichthys. FaunAfri (the Africa Museum, Tervuren) lists the species under its original description and confirms it as non-seasonal — a continuous spawner, not a diapausing annual — consistent with its permanent-water habitat.
Morphology
Lacustricola centralis is a slender, torpedo-shaped fish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in, typical for the genus. The body is laterally compressed but streamlined, with a slightly flattened dorsal profile and a rounded, subterminal mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. Scales are relatively large for the body size, giving a slightly reflective, silvery flanks.
The defining feature of all lampeyes in the family Procatopodidae is the iridescent light-organ — a reflective, blue-green or silver patch situated above and behind the eye — which catches and scatters light and serves a role in schooling cohesion and courtship signalling. In Lacustricola centralis, males are noticeably more brightly coloured than females, showing intensified iridescence on the light-organ and elongated or more vivid fins during breeding condition. Females are plainer, with a rounded, fuller abdomen when gravid.
The fins are relatively modest in extension. The dorsal and anal fins are set towards the posterior of the body in a pattern consistent with a mid-water swimmer. The caudal fin is rounded to subtly lanceolate.
Habitat
The natural range of Lacustricola centralis spans several drainage systems in east-central Africa: FishBase records it from the Lake Rukwa drainage, the Malagarasi River basin, and the southwestern Lake Victoria catchment in Tanzania, with additional records from the Middle Akagera system in Rwanda. These waters lie across the interior plateau of Tanzania at elevations that moderate temperature, and they connect the Central African rift margins with the East African Great Lake system.
FishBase describes the typical microhabitat as quite shallow water between flooded grasses — vegetated margins, emergent macrophytes, swampy lake edges, and flooded floodplain grass. This is the classic lampeye niche: slow to still, shallow, well-oxygenated margins with ample cover of aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation and accumulated roots, which provide spawning surfaces for the adhesive eggs. The water chemistry falls within a moderate range: FishBase records a pH of 6.5–7.2, reflecting the near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions of the inland Tanzanian plateau rather than the extreme softness of West African forest streams or the high alkalinity of the Rift Valley crater lakes.
As a species of permanent water — not seasonal or ephemeral pools — Lacustricola centralis inhabits waters that persist year-round, which is reflected in its non-annual breeding strategy.
Feeding
Like most procatopodid lampeyes, Lacustricola centralis is a micro-predator and planktivore. The small, upturned or subterminal mouth, positioned to take food at or near the water surface and in the upper water column, is designed for capturing small invertebrates: mosquito larvae, midges and other chironomid larvae, water-surface insects, zooplankton, and small crustaceans. This feeding mode is consistent across the lampeye family and suits the shallow vegetated margins the species inhabits.
In the aquarium, lampeyes of this type readily accept suitably sized live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, and bloodworm — and will take quality micro-pellets and fine dry foods once settled. They are active foragers that do well with multiple small feedings per day rather than a single large meal, matching their opportunistic feeding style in nature.
Mating
Lacustricola centralis is a non-annual lampeye with a continuous pair-spawning or small-group spawning strategy. Unlike the dramatic annual killifishes that synchronise breeding with seasonal rainfall and bury eggs in mud to survive drought, lampeyes of this group spawn repeatedly and persistently through the year in permanent water bodies. Males display their iridescent light-organs and extend their fins to court females, with competition between males for access to gravid females.
The courtship is typically brief and active: a male positions himself alongside or slightly above the female, both individuals swimming in close parallel. Spawning takes place near or among fine-leaved plants, floating roots, or other fibrous substrate where the adhesive eggs can be deposited one or a few at a time. The light-organ above the eye likely plays a role in species recognition and courtship signalling, and is at its most vivid in males in peak condition.
Breeding
Breeding in Lacustricola centralis follows the non-annual, adhesive-egg model shared across the genus Lacustricola and the broader lampeye family. The female releases a small number of eggs — typically one to a handful per spawning act — which adhere to fine plants, root mats, or other fibrous surfaces and develop over one to two weeks depending on water temperature, without any diapause phase. Both parents ignore the eggs after spawning; there is no paternal or maternal care.
In the aquarium, a clump of Java moss, spawning mops of wool or nylon, or floating plants with trailing roots provides sufficient spawning substrate. Eggs can be left in the breeding tank if ample cover protects them from the adults, or the mop or plant clump can be transferred to a separate rearing vessel. Fry are very small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods as first foods before graduating to baby Artemia nauplii. A consistent temperature in the range of approximately 73–79 °F and good water quality support steady spawning activity.
In the aquarium
Lacustricola centralis is rarely seen in the mainstream hobby but appears occasionally in the collections of killifish specialists, particularly those focused on East African procatopodids. Its care requirements are straightforward for an experienced keeper: a small, well-planted tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a group, with a tight-fitting lid to prevent the jumping that is common in small killifishes. Water parameters should fall within the species' natural range — near-neutral pH (6.5–7.2), moderate hardness, and a temperature of approximately 72–79 °F.
The species is peaceful and best kept in a single-species or species-only group of six or more individuals, which encourages natural schooling behaviour and reduces inter-male stress. It should not be housed with larger or aggressive tankmates; conversely it poses no threat to similarly sized peaceful species. Subdued lighting and a dark substrate show the iridescent light-organ to best advantage.
The combination of its small size, peaceful disposition, continuous spawning behaviour, and moderate water requirements make Lacustricola centralis an appealing subject for the specialist killifish hobbyist, though its limited availability means it requires sourcing from specialist breeders and killifish societies rather than general aquarium retail.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Lacustricola centralis; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species' range across multiple drainage systems — the Lake Rukwa drainage, the Malagarasi basin, the southwestern Lake Victoria catchment, and the Middle Akagera in Rwanda — provides some distributional buffer compared with a single-locality endemic, but it does not render the species immune to the pressures bearing on freshwater fish across east-central Africa.
The primary threats facing shallow-water species of this type in Tanzania and Rwanda are habitat degradation and loss: deforestation and agricultural expansion increase sedimentation and nutrient loading in lake margins and river systems; drainage of swamp and wetland habitat eliminates the shallow vegetated margins on which lampeyes depend; and introduced species, particularly Nile perch (Lates niloticus) and tilapia within the Lake Victoria basin, have reshaped fish communities across the region. The Lake Rukwa catchment has faced periodic water-level fluctuations and increasing human pressure on its catchment vegetation.
As a small, specialised lampeye of permanent-water margins, Lacustricola centralis is vulnerable to any large-scale alteration of its shallow, vegetated microhabitat. A formal IUCN assessment drawing on current distributional survey data would clarify the conservation picture for this little-documented species.
