Taxonomy & naming
Nothobranchius niassa was described by Valdesalici, Bills, Dorn, Reichwald and Cellerino in 2012, with the holotype (SAIAB 73777, a male of 1 in SL) collected from a pool in the Lukombe River drainage near the Mbstamila–Mantondovela road (12°08'17"S, 37°32'03"E), at elevations of 1037–1588 ft, on 14 August 2003. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Nothobranchius niassa Valdesalici, Bills, Dorn, Reichwald & Cellerino, 2012.
The species is placed within the subgenus Adiniops and assigned to the N. guentheri species group, a clade of East and southern African annual killifishes characterised by broadly similar male colour patterning — blue or turquoise ground colour overlaid with red or orange-red markings — and by inhabiting seasonal savanna pools that disappear completely in the dry season. Within the genus, which encompasses over one hundred described species across sub-Saharan Africa, the N. guentheri group represents some of the most ornately coloured members.
The specific epithet niassa refers to the Niassa Reserve (formerly Reserva do Niassa), the vast protected area in Niassa Province, northern Mozambique, from which all known specimens have been collected. No subspecies or geographic variants have been formally recognised. The name Nothobranchius nyassae is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Nothobranchius niassa is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in in males, while Wild Nothos reports the largest recorded specimen at 1 in SL — placing it among the smaller members of the N. guentheri group. The body form is the typical compressed, moderately deep Nothobranchius shape, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back and broadly overlapping, a feature shared across the genus.
Males are strikingly coloured: the iris is light blue and the body ground colour is similarly light blue, overlaid with a dark red reticulation that creates a net-like or mosaic pattern across the flanks. The snout and dorsal surface of the head are red. The dorsal and anal fins are light blue and carry curved red stripes; the pectoral fins are red. This combination of blue and red elements is characteristic of the N. guentheri complex. Females, as is general in Nothobranchius, are cryptically coloured — olive to tan with little or no patterning — making reliable field sexing straightforward only in adults. The dorsal fin carries 15–18 rays and the anal fin 15–17 rays, counts consistent with species in this group.
No syntopic congeners have been recorded at the known collection sites, so there is no risk of confusion with co-occurring Nothobranchius species in the field.
Habitat
All known material of Nothobranchius niassa originates from seasonal freshwater pools and intermittent river pools within the Niassa Reserve, northern Mozambique, in the Ruvuma (Rovuma) River drainage. The reserve encompasses a large block of miombo woodland and savanna biome, and the fish's pools are typical savanna seasonal wetlands: shallow depressions and floodplain pools that fill during the rainy season (roughly November–April) and dry out completely in the long dry season.
The IUCN assessment characterises the habitat as seasonal and intermittent inland wetlands — seasonal freshwater marshes and pools of less than 8 hectares. Water parameters recorded at the type locality are cool for a tropical fish: approximately 68 °F, with low electrical conductivity of approximately 100 μS/cm and slightly turbid, light clay-gray water with leaf litter and gravel substrate. Pools are shallow (recorded at less than 19.5 in depth) with no aquatic vegetation. The substrate is a vertisol-type mud — swelling clays that crack deeply in the dry season, forming the matrix in which eggs are deposited and overwinter in diapause.
The species is considered endemic to this part of northern Mozambique. Its estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) ranges from 535 to 10,0 mi² depending on the scenario applied, a figure reflecting limited survey data and uncertainty about the full distribution within the Ruvuma drainage.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to Nothobranchius niassa has been published. Based on the biology of the genus and the savanna pool habitat, the diet is presumed to follow the pattern documented for other annual Nothobranchius species: small invertebrates forming the bulk of the diet, with aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mosquito larvae), microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and worms all taken opportunistically. The small maximum size limits prey to similarly small invertebrates.
In the aquarium, N. niassa is expected to accept the live and frozen foods standard for annual killifish: live or frozen Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and Tubifex. Dry foods are generally less enthusiastically taken by Nothobranchius than by many other aquarium genera, and live or frozen invertebrates are strongly preferred for conditioning breeding stock. Regular feeding with high-quality live food in the weeks leading up to spawning is the standard practice in the killifish hobby and produces the best egg batches.
Mating
Nothobranchius niassa is an annual killifish with substrate-spawning reproduction — the defining biological mode of the Nothobranchius genus and the savanna pool annual killifish as a whole. In the wild, mating occurs during the wet season when pools are full. Breeding males display intensely to females with spread fins and lateral body posturing, showing off the blue-and-red chromatic pattern to maximum effect. As with other members of the N. guentheri group, males can be aggressive toward one another and toward females that are not ready to spawn.
Courting pairs dive together into the soft substrate — mud, leaf litter, or detritus at the pool bottom — where eggs are deposited and fertilised simultaneously, buried a few millimetres below the surface. Each dive results in one or a small number of eggs. The pair may repeat this sequence many times across a spawning session. Because eggs are buried in the sediment, they are left behind when the pool dries; the adults play no further role in parental care once the eggs are in the substrate. The fish are polygamous and promiscuous — a single male may court multiple females and vice versa — as is general across the genus.
Breeding
The eggs of Nothobranchius niassa, like those of all annual Nothobranchius, are adapted for survival through a complete annual dry season. Once buried in the substrate, they enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — that allows survival for months in desiccated mud. Wild Nothos notes that the reproduction and embryonic development of N. niassa have not been formally studied, but the pattern is presumed similar to the closely related N. makondorum and other N. guentheri group members, in which eggs pass through multiple diapause stages before hatching is triggered by re-flooding. In practice, hobbyists store N. niassa eggs on slightly damp peat or coconut coir for a diapause period of approximately three to six months before rewetting to induce hatching — standard protocol for savanna-zone Nothobranchius species.
In the aquarium, spawning is straightforward. A container of peat or coconut coir placed on the bottom of the tank serves as the spawning medium; pairs are given a few weeks to spawn, after which the medium is removed, gently squeezed to drain excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature (approximately 75–79 °F) for the diapause period. The medium is then re-wetted with aged water and larvae should emerge within days. Fry are tiny at hatching and require very fine live food — infusoria, vinegar eels, or newly-hatched Artemia nauplii — before graduating to larger live foods. Growth is rapid; fish may reach sexual maturity in as little as six to eight weeks under warm conditions. Life expectancy in the wild is under a year and is not substantially longer in captivity.
In the aquarium
Nothobranchius niassa is an annual killifish for the specialist hobbyist rather than the general community aquarist. The species is rare in collections — it is not established in the ornamental trade and is maintained primarily by killifish society members who manage the diapause cycle. Sourcing requires contact with killifish associations such as the American Killifish Association, which lists the species in its records.
Housing follows the standard approach for small annual Nothobranchius: a small, species-only aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a breeding pair or small group. Filtration should be gentle — sponge filters are preferred — and the water column should not be deep. Water temperature around 68–72 °F reflects the cool conditions recorded at the type locality and is lower than what is used for many tropical killifish; maintaining the species on the cool side prolongs life span compared with higher temperatures, which accelerate ageing in annual killifishes. Soft, slightly acidic water with low conductivity mirrors the approximately 100 μS/cm field conditions. A peat or coconut coir spawning tray on the substrate is essential for breeding.
Because males are highly competitive, multiple males should only be kept together in larger tanks with visual breaks. Females should not be outnumbered by males to prevent harassment. Given the species' restricted range and Vulnerable status, those maintaining it are encouraged to engage with conservation breeding networks and killifish societies to preserve genetic diversity across captive lines.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius niassa as Vulnerable under criterion B1ab(iii) in January 2019 (assessors: Nagy & Watters). The assessment records an extent of occurrence of 535–10,0 mi² and estimates that the species is known from only a few observation points within one to ten threat-defined locations, all within the Niassa Reserve of Niassa Province, northern Mozambique. The primary threat identified is habitat degradation caused by agriculture and smallholder farming activities encroaching on and modifying the seasonal wetland pools on which the species depends. No specific conservation measures were in place at the time of assessment.
The Niassa Reserve — one of the largest conservation areas in Africa — provides nominal legal protection to the habitat, but internal settlement and agricultural activity within the reserve's buffer and community zones represent ongoing pressure on lowland seasonal pools. The species' reliance on a very small number of discrete seasonal wetland habitats makes it inherently vulnerable to local disturbances; the complete drying of pools is natural and tolerated through the diapause mechanism, but permanent conversion or modification of pool basins — through drainage, cattle trampling, or siltation from cleared catchments — eliminates the habitat entirely.
No reassessment has been published since 2019. Survey data from within the Ruvuma drainage remain limited, and the true number of populations is uncertain. Given the species' restricted range and single-country endemism in Mozambique, any future agricultural intensification or climate-driven shifts in the timing or reliability of the rainy season pose real risks to continued survival in the wild.
