Enteromius arcislongae is a small African barb described by Keilhack in 1908 from East African freshwaters. Like most members of the large genus Enteromius — the dominant barb lineage across sub-Saharan Africa — it is a slender, shoaling cyprinid of streams and rivers, an opportunistic omnivore, and an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. It is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and remains one of the less-documented members of a genus that spans the continent.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius arcislongae was described by Keilhack in 1908. It was originally placed in the old aggregate genus Barbus, which historically served as a catch-all for barb-like fishes across Africa, Asia and Europe. Phylogenetic and morphological revisions progressively dismembered that unwieldy grouping, and African species have been reassigned to Enteromius Cope, 1861 — the genus that now holds the great majority of small to medium barbs across sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination Enteromius arcislongae (Keilhack, 1908), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move from Keilhack's original genus.

The species epithet arcislongae is Latin in construction. Enteromius is a large and taxonomically challenging genus; many of its several hundred species are known from few specimens and restricted localities, and the boundaries between closely related forms are not always well resolved. Molecular and morphological work on African barbs is ongoing, and the placement of individual species may be further refined as the group is revised.

Morphology

Enteromius arcislongae has the typical body plan of a small African Enteromius: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a relatively pointed snout, a subterminal mouth, and the single dorsal fin placed roughly at mid-body. The caudal fin is forked. Coloration in the genus is variable but generally silvery to olive-brown on the flanks, often with one or more dark lateral markings — spots, bars or a lateral stripe — that assist species identification; specific pattern details for E. arcislongae are poorly documented in the literature accessible to this account.

Adult size is in the small-barb range typical of the genus. Precise maximum length data are sparse for this species; comparable Enteromius from East African stream habitats typically reach 2–4 in in total length. Reliable measurements from examined specimens or a full species account have not been confirmed for this entry.

Habitat

Keilhack's original collection localises Enteromius arcislongae to East Africa. Like most African Enteromius, it likely inhabits flowing freshwaters — smaller rivers, streams, and seasonal tributaries — in lowland or mid-altitude terrain. African savanna and highland streams supporting Enteromius typically present a moderate current over sandy, gravelly or rocky substrates, with riparian vegetation providing shade and terrestrial invertebrate input.

Water chemistry in East African river systems varies considerably with geology: coastal lowland and forest-margin streams tend toward soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, while rivers crossing volcanic or carbonate terrain can be harder and more alkaline. Without a detailed ecological study for E. arcislongae specifically, water parameter ranges can only be estimated broadly from the regional context. The species is assumed seasonally abundant or reduced in accessibility as regional rainfall patterns drive stream levels.

Feeding

Enteromius arcislongae is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner typical of small African barbs. Members of Enteromius from stream and river habitats generally exploit a wide range of food items: aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms), algae, diatoms, fine organic detritus and occasional terrestrial insects drifting into the current. Feeding is often opportunistic and changes with seasonal availability.

No dietary study specific to E. arcislongae has been published in the sources available to this account. In captivity, small African barbs of this type readily accept high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp; some plant-based foods are beneficial given the likely algal component of the natural diet.

Mating

Enteromius arcislongae is an egg-scattering barb with no parental care or pair bond. Spawning behaviour follows the pattern common to the genus: when females are gravid and conditions are suitable, males pursue them through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. There is no territory defended beyond the transient courtship, no nest constructed, and no permanent association between spawning partners.

In many African Enteromius, reproductive activity is loosely tied to seasonal rainfall — rising water levels, increased flow and temperature changes that accompany the rains stimulate spawning in stream species. Specific reproductive triggers for E. arcislongae have not been documented.

Breeding

Like other members of Enteromius, E. arcislongae scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, over gravel or sandy substrate, or among root masses. The eggs receive no attention from either parent once laid; adult barbs frequently consume their own eggs if given the opportunity. The larvae are small and initially attach to surfaces before becoming free-swimming and seeking food.

No captive breeding account has been published for this species. Hobbyists working with small African barbs of this type typically replicate stream conditions in a shallow, well-filtered spawning tank with soft substrate or spawning mops, remove adults immediately after spawning, and raise the fry on infusoria and then micro-foods. Detailed fecundity and developmental data for E. arcislongae specifically are not available.

In the aquarium

Enteromius arcislongae is not a species commonly available in the aquarium trade. As a small East African barb it would in principle suit a modestly sized aquarium with good filtration, a moderate current, open swimming space, and fine-leaved planting or other cover. Small African Enteromius are generally peaceful shoaling fish and do best in groups; solitary specimens or pairs may be shy and prone to stress.

Because wild-caught supply is limited and captive-bred stock essentially absent from the commercial trade, aquarists are unlikely to encounter E. arcislongae through normal hobbyist channels. Species-level identity can also be difficult to confirm without expert examination of morphological characters. Those interested in East African stream barbs generally have better access to commoner regional Enteromius, or to the small but growing representation of African cyprinids reaching specialist retailers.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been confirmed for Enteromius arcislongae in the sources available to this account. Many Enteromius species across sub-Saharan Africa are listed as Data Deficient or Least Concern where assessed, though a number of narrowly distributed or single-basin species face genuine threats from habitat degradation, water extraction, agricultural runoff and climate-driven flow changes.

East African freshwater biodiversity faces sustained pressure from a growing human population, agricultural expansion into riparian zones, and infrastructure development affecting stream connectivity. Without a modern range survey and population assessment for E. arcislongae, its conservation status cannot be stated with confidence. It is not known to be targeted by the ornamental fishery.
