Nothobranchius virgatus is a small annual killifish of the upper Nile drainage, inhabiting seasonal pools and flooded channels across the Nuba Mountains region of Sudan and the vast Sudd wetland complex extending into South Sudan and Ethiopia. Like all Nothobranchius, it packs an entire life cycle — birth, growth, spawning, and death — into a few months of wet-season water before the pools evaporate and the next generation waits out the dry season as dormant eggs buried in the substrate. Males are brilliantly coloured; females are cryptic, olive-brown, and built to survive long enough to fill the mud with eggs. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern in 2019, a reflection of its broad range across the Nile basin rather than any abundance data, and the threats that beset seasonal pool habitats across the African Sahel apply here as elsewhere in the genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius virgatus was originally described by Ernst Ahl in 1924. The genus Nothobranchius was established by Peters (1868) and belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes — the toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Nothobranchius virgatus (Ahl, 1924). The genus comprises over 90 described species of seasonal African killifish distributed across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to the upper Nile and east to the coastal drainages of Kenya and Tanzania.

Within Nothobranchius, N. virgatus belongs to a broadly defined Nile-drainage group alongside other northern species adapted to the seasonally inundated floodplains of the Sudd and the Nuba Mountains basin. The species has historically attracted relatively little systematic revision compared to the intensively studied East African coastal species, and its full distributional limits and any population structure within the Nile basin have not been comprehensively mapped. Catalog of Fishes treats the name as stable.

The species epithet virgatus is Latin for 'striped' or 'banded', from virga (a rod or stripe), referring to the pattern of the male's coloration.

Morphology

Nothobranchius virgatus is a small fish, reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase). The body form is typical of the genus: robust and somewhat laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth well-suited to taking surface-dwelling and water-column invertebrates. The caudal fin is rounded to slightly lyre-shaped.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as in virtually all Nothobranchius. Males are conspicuously coloured — the body and fins carrying iridescent blues, reds, and oranges arranged in a banded or striped pattern consistent with the species name. The caudal fin typically bears a dark marginal band. Females are uniformly drab: olive to brownish-grey with no patterning, small in comparison, and built for inconspicuousness rather than display.

The scales are cycloid and moderately large. The body musculature is dense relative to the small frame, an adaptation shared by the genus for the rapid growth required to complete a full life cycle before the pools dry. Fin rays are not elongated in this species; the dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body, positioned for efficient aquatic locomotion rather than display surface area.

Habitat

Nothobranchius virgatus occupies temporary freshwater pools, seasonally inundated floodplains, and flooded channels in the upper Nile system. The core of its range lies around the Nuba Mountains of central Sudan and the Sudd — one of the world's largest wetland complexes, a vast seasonally flooded swamp in South Sudan fed by the White Nile. Its range extends into Ethiopia along the upper Nile tributaries.

These are shallow, ephemeral pools that form during the rainy season and dry completely over the subsequent dry months. The water is typically turbid to slightly tannin-stained, soft to moderately hard, and acidic to near-neutral in reaction. Aquarium Co-Op forum records on the genus give a working pH range of 6.0–7.5 with soft to moderate hardness and temperatures around 75 °F (76 °F) — figures consistent with tropical African savanna seasonally flooded waters. Bottom sediment is fine organic mud and detritus, into which the fish spawn and which holds the eggs through the dry season.

The Sudd and surrounding Nuba Mountains pools are at low elevation in a semi-arid to sub-humid zone where rainfall is highly seasonal. During the rains the landscape floods extensively; during the dry season standing water disappears entirely from the marginal habitats these fish depend on, leaving only the buried eggs.

Feeding

Nothobranchius virgatus is a micro-predator typical of the genus. FishBase records the wild diet as cladocerans (water fleas), copepods, ostracods, and aquatic insects — the suite of small invertebrates that colonise temporary savanna pools rapidly at the onset of the rainy season. The upturned mouth positions the fish well for picking prey from the water column and just beneath the surface film.

In the aquarium, Nothobranchius feed readily on a variety of small live and frozen invertebrates. Conditioning adults for spawning is most effectively done with high-protein live or frozen foods: Daphnia, Cyclops, blood worms (Chironomus larvae), white worms, and similar items. Aquarium Co-Op hobbyists note feeding two to three times daily when conditioning pairs. Prepared foods are accepted but a predominantly meaty diet keeps the fish in peak colour and condition. Because these are short-lived fishes, maintaining nutritional condition is particularly important — there is little time to recover from poor feeding.

Mating

Like all Nothobranchius, N. virgatus is an annual fish and a substrate-spawner. The spawning act is a brief, repeated dive into the soft bottom sediment: the male courts the female with lateral displays that show off his banded colouration, then the pair press together side by side and plunge into the mud, depositing a small number of fertilised eggs before returning to the water column. The sequence is repeated many times across the breeding season, with each dive burying a clutch of eggs several centimetres into the substrate.

Males are highly competitive with one another and should be kept one male to one or several females in captivity to prevent harassment and injury. The courtship displays — lateral spreads, flared fins, rapid approach-and-retreat sequences — are among the most visually striking behaviours in the killifish hobby, and the sexual dimorphism in this genus means the male's striped, iridescent colour pattern is effectively advertising fitness to receptive females. Spawning activity is typically highest in the mornings.

Because wild fish live only as long as the pool holds water — often a matter of months — the pace of reproduction is intense. Adults invest heavily in spawning throughout their short adult lives.

Breeding

The eggs of Nothobranchius virgatus are drought-resistant, diapausing embryos — the defining feature of the annual-killifish life strategy. Once buried in the substrate, the eggs enter a state of developmental arrest (diapause) that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of the habitat for months. In the wild, the dry season lasts until the following rains refill the pools and trigger hatching; in captivity this is replicated by harvesting the eggs from the spawning medium (peat moss or coconut coir), drying the medium to a just-barely-moist state, sealing it in a labelled bag, and storing it at room temperature for a species-appropriate incubation period.

FishBase records an incubation period of three to six months for N. virgatus — broadly typical of Nile-drainage Nothobranchius. After this period the medium is re-wetted (submerged in soft, warm water) and fry hatch over the following hours to days. Fry are large by killifish standards at hatching and accept Artemia nauplii (brine shrimp) almost immediately; growth is rapid. Wild fish rarely survive a full year, so reaching sexual maturity within weeks and spawning repeatedly until the pool dries is the evolutionary strategy.

The hobby keeps this species on peat or coir spawning substrate placed on the tank bottom. Eggs are harvested monthly by sieving, checking for development under magnification, and returning undeveloped eggs to storage. A temperature of approximately 75 °F (76 °F) during the wet-season tank phase is recommended, with a slight reduction during dry storage.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius virgatus is suitable for intermediate killifish keepers who are comfortable with the diapause egg storage cycle. A small species tank of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a pair or a trio (one male, two females). Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), and kept at around 72–79 °F. Because the fish are short-lived and spawning-focused, conditioning with high-quality live or frozen foods is essential from the start.

The tank should have a dark, fine-substrate layer of peat or coconut coir on the bottom for spawning. Spawning containers — small, covered pots or trays of moist peat — placed on the tank floor also work well and simplify egg harvesting. Gentle filtration (a sponge filter) avoids disturbing the substrate; bright lighting is not required and subdued lighting with floating plants shows the male's colours best and reduces female stress.

This is not a community fish. Males of Nothobranchius should not be kept together without careful monitoring; females must have adequate space to retreat from persistent males. The short lifespan — often six to nine months from hatching to natural death — means the keeper should have the next generation already developing in storage before the adults age out. For hobbyists drawn to the annual-killi lifestyle, N. virgatus offers the full experience: vivid male colour, easily triggered spawning, and the satisfying ritual of the wet-dry cycle that mimics the African seasonal flood.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius virgatus as Least Concern in 2019. This reflects the species' relatively broad distribution across the upper Nile system — the Nuba Mountains region of Sudan, the Sudd wetland of South Sudan, and into Ethiopia — compared with the many single-locality Nothobranchius endemics assessed as Vulnerable or Endangered. A wide range, combined with the extreme drought tolerance of the diapausing eggs, buffers the species against localised habitat loss.

Nonetheless, the threats that affect annual killifish throughout Africa apply to N. virgatus. Seasonal pools in the Nuba Mountains and Sudd margins are subject to drainage and agricultural conversion, overgrazing that degrades pool margins and increases siltation, and the diversion of seasonal floodwaters for irrigation. The Sudd itself has faced proposals for large-scale canal projects (notably the Jonglei Canal, construction of which was halted by the South Sudanese civil war) that would fundamentally alter the hydrology of the region. Introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.), deployed across Africa for malaria control, are documented predators of killifish eggs and fry in some regions.

The species is maintained in the European Killifish Association (EKA) and American Killifish Association (AKA) studbook networks, and hobbyist captive populations provide a degree of ex-situ security. Given the political instability in South Sudan and Sudan, field survey data on population status are limited, and the Least Concern assessment should be read as reflecting known range extent rather than confirmed population stability.
