Labeobarbus claudinae is a large, benthopelagic barb endemic to the Upper Akagera river system in Burundi and Rwanda — a remarkably restricted range for a fish that can exceed 12 in in total length. Described in 1990 from the headwaters above Rusumo Falls, it is the only member of the African yellowfish group known solely from this highland drainage, and its confinement to a single river system above an impassable waterfall has left it with no safety net against localised habitat degradation. The IUCN assesses it as Vulnerable, citing ongoing habitat loss as the primary threat, and no aquarium records have been documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus claudinae was described by De Vos and Thys van den Audenaerde in 1990 from specimens collected in the Upper Akagera drainage of Rwanda and Burundi. It was originally placed in the broad genus Barbus, as Barbus claudinae, following the convention then used for most large African cyprinids. Subsequent revision of African large-bodied barbs transferred the species to Labeobarbus, the genus now used for the yellowfish and allied large barbs of sub-Saharan Africa.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Labeobarbus claudinae (De Vos & Thys van den Audenaerde, 1990), with the parenthetical authority marking the move out of the original genus. Labeobarbus is a large genus of African riverine barbs with species reaching considerable sizes, several of which are ecologically and economically important in their home river systems.

The species epithet claudinae honours Claudine Mauel, who died in 1985 in Gisenyi, Rwanda, likely a collector or supporter associated with the original ichthyological work in the region. The name is thus a patronym in the genitive feminine form.

Morphology

Labeobarbus claudinae is a large barb, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 12 in. As a benthopelagic species it is adapted for life near the bottom as well as in open water, and the general build is typical of the large-bodied Labeobarbus complex: a robust, fusiform body with a slightly arched dorsal profile, moderately large scales, and the barbels characteristic of the genus.

Specific morphological details beyond maximum size are sparsely documented in the accessible literature, reflecting how little-studied this endemic species remains. FishBase records it as benthopelagic and freshwater, consistent with a fish at home in both torrent streams and the calmer reaches of lakes within its range. Size data are based on male/unsexed specimens only, and females at full size and gravidity may differ.

Habitat

The species is confined entirely to the Upper Akagera system above Rusumo Falls, straddling the border of Rwanda and Burundi in the Great Lakes region of East-Central Africa. Within this drainage it occupies a range of freshwater environments: FishBase records its habitat as rivers, lakes, and torrential waters, indicating tolerance of both fast-flowing montane streams and standing or slow-moving lacustrine conditions.

The Upper Akagera catchment lies on the central African plateau at considerable elevation, meaning water temperatures are likely cooler than typical equatorial lowland rivers. Specific physicochemical data (temperature, pH, hardness) for the species' range are not reported in the published literature. The impassable barrier of Rusumo Falls has prevented any natural downstream colonisation, making the species an isolated endemic above a natural dispersal barrier.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for Labeobarbus claudinae have not been published in the accessible literature. Large Labeobarbus species in general are omnivorous to detritivorous, feeding on algae, plant material, invertebrates, and organic debris gleaned from the substrate — a benthic grazing strategy consistent with the benthopelagic lifestyle recorded for this species.

The labeonine-type mouth typical of the genus, with fleshy lips adapted for scraping and suction, suggests a significant benthic algal and detrital component in the diet. Larger individuals may also consume invertebrates, crustaceans, or small fish opportunistically, as documented for related large-bodied African barbs.

Mating

No spawning observations for Labeobarbus claudinae have been published. Like all barbs, it is inferred to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive strategy of cyprinids in the barb lineage. Courtship in large African riverine barbs typically involves males actively pursuing gravid females through the water column or over suitable substrate, and eggs and milt are released together without the formation of a pair bond.

In larger Labeobarbus species, spawning is often seasonal and linked to rainfall-driven river spates that cue migration toward spawning grounds — a pattern common to many large-bodied barbs and mahseers that use seasonal flooding as a reproductive trigger. Whether L. claudinae undertakes such migrations within the Upper Akagera system is undocumented.

Breeding

Labeobarbus claudinae has not been bred in captivity and is not known from the aquarium trade. In the wild it is expected to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over suitable substrate — gravel, rocks, or coarse riverbed material — with no parental care of any kind. Adults provide no guarding of eggs or fry, which is the standard condition across Labeobarbus and barbs generally.

The isolated nature of the Upper Akagera population, combined with its restricted range, means that reproductive success is entirely dependent on the health of local habitat. Any disruption to spawning grounds — through sedimentation, water extraction, or hydrological alteration — would directly affect recruitment with no possibility of recolonisation from outside the drainage.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus claudinae is not kept in the aquarium hobby and no records of it in captivity have been documented. Its large adult size of 12 in, combined with its threatened status and highly restricted wild range, make it unsuitable as an aquarium subject, and it would require special permits and conservation justification to collect legally.

Interest in the species is principally scientific and conservation-focused rather than commercial. The absence of a captive population also means there is no insurance colony against wild population collapse, a gap that applies to many narrowly endemic African riverine fishes.

Conservation

Labeobarbus claudinae is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in October 2015 under criterion B1ab(iii), meaning it qualifies on the basis of a restricted extent of occurrence combined with ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. Its entire known range lies within a single river system above Rusumo Falls — the Upper Akagera drainage of Rwanda and Burundi — a geographic confinement that leaves no room for population rescue from elsewhere.

The primary threat is habitat loss, consistent with the pressures facing freshwater ecosystems across the East African plateau: land clearance, agricultural runoff, sedimentation from deforested catchments, and water extraction for irrigation and domestic use. The Great Lakes region has experienced significant land-use change in recent decades, and small, endemic fish above natural barriers are among the most exposed species. Continued monitoring of the Upper Akagera system and protection of riparian habitat would be the most direct conservation measures for this species.
