Norman's lampeye is a small, peaceable schooling killifish whose defining feature — a crescent of vivid blue-green iridescence above the eye — gives the lampeye group its name. Measuring barely 2 in at maximum, it inhabits the slow waters of savannah rivers, brooks, and vegetated swamps from Senegal east to Sudan, one of the widest natural distributions of any West African killifish. Unlike the better-known annual killifishes that require seasonal drying to complete their life cycle, Poropanchax normani is a continuous, non-annual spawner of permanent water bodies, laying small clutches of adhesive eggs among fine vegetation across an extended season and demanding no diapause period from its eggs.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropanchax normani was formally described by the German zoologist Ernst Ahl in 1928. The authority is presented in parentheses because, as with many killifishes first assigned to a broad catch-all genus, the species has been moved since its original description — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Poropanchax normani (Ahl, 1928). The genus Poropanchax is placed within the family Poeciliidae by some recent treatments and within Aplocheilidae by others, reflecting ongoing instability in higher-level killifish classification; the American Killifish Association lists it under Class 14 (All Other Old World), a practical hobbyist grouping that sidesteps the contested phylogenetic placement.

The species epithet honours John Roxborough Norman (1898–1944), an English ichthyologist at the Natural History Museum, London, who made significant contributions to the study of tropical freshwater fish. The AKA database records 25 articles in the Journal of the American Killifish Association devoted to this species, evidence of the sustained hobbyist interest it has attracted since it first entered the trade.

Morphology

Poropanchax normani is a slender, fusiform lampeye of modest proportions. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in for males and approximately 1.5 in for females — in practice most aquarium specimens are closer to 1–1.5 in. The body is relatively deep compared with some of its near relatives, and adult males develop noticeably extended ventral fins that reach toward the base of the anal fin, a secondary sexual character absent in females. Dorsal fin counts run 6–8 rays, anal 9–12 rays, and mid-lateral scale counts fall between 24 and 27.

The defining feature of the species — and of the lampeye group broadly — is the iridescent light-organ located just above the eye. In P. normani this presents as a vivid blue-green crescent that catches and amplifies available light, producing a conspicuous signal under the dim canopy of shaded savannah swamps. Males are larger and more vividly coloured with longer, more elaborate unpaired fins; females are shorter, proportionally rounder, and show plainer colouration with reduced fin extension.

Habitat

The species occupies a wide arc of sub-Saharan Africa, documented from at least 11 countries: Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, and Chad, with FishBase extending the known range east to Sudan — a total of 55 confirmed collection localities across this belt. The habitats are shallow, heavily vegetated slow-water environments: savannah small rivers, seasonal brooks running between gallery-forest corridors, and standing swamps with emergent and submerged aquatic plants.

Water conditions across this range reflect the soft to moderately mineralised character of West African savannah drainages. FishBase records a temperature range of 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.2. Hobbyist accounts note that native waters lean soft and slightly acidic, though tank-bred specimens — which have been cultivated in Europe and North America for many decades — typically adapt without difficulty to a broader range of tap-water chemistries.

Feeding

In the wild, Norman's lampeye feeds primarily on small insects, insect larvae, and tiny invertebrates at or near the water surface — feeding behaviour consistent with the upper-column schooling lifestyle shared by most lampeyes. The small, upturned mouth is well suited to surface-film hunting.

In captivity the species readily accepts a variety of small prepared, frozen, and live foods. Finely ground dry foods, small-grade micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp nauplii are all taken. Variety is beneficial for long-term condition; a diet composed exclusively of dry foods can suppress colour in males. The small mouth size is the primary constraint — foods must be appropriately sized to be consumed efficiently.

Mating

Poropanchax normani is a non-annual, continuous egg-layer — one of the plant-spawning lampeyes that breeds throughout the year in permanent water bodies without requiring any dry season or egg diapause. In a well-maintained group tank, courtship is near-constant: males display actively to females and to competing males, erecting fins, intensifying colour, and orientating their iridescent eye-patch toward potential partners or rivals.

Pairing is typically brief and non-exclusive. A male courts an individual female, drawing alongside her, and the pair spawn with a rapid trembling embrace among fine-leaved vegetation or moss, depositing one or a small number of adhesive eggs at a time. The same individuals will repeat this across different plants and different partners over the course of a day. There is no territory defence around the spawning site and no pair bond is maintained afterward.

Breeding

Each spawning embrace produces only a small number of adhesive eggs that cling to plant leaves, moss fibres, or fine roots. Incubation at 75–79 °F lasts approximately 10–14 days; the larvae hatch as fully formed miniatures capable of accepting very small live foods almost immediately. Development is non-diapause: eggs proceed directly through embryogenesis without entering dormancy, and hobbyists do not need to dry, refrigerate, or stratify them as with true annual killifishes.

Because adults and other fish in the tank will readily consume both eggs and larvae, maximising yield requires some intervention. The most practical approach is to provide dense spawning substrate — Java moss, fine-leaved floating plants, or commercial spawning mops — and either remove adults periodically to a clean tank, or remove the plants carrying eggs and incubate them separately. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial fry powder as a first food, graduating to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii and finely powdered dry foods at two to three weeks. Growth is steady and the fish typically reach sexual maturity within a few months.

In the aquarium

Norman's lampeye is widely regarded as one of the most beginner-accessible killifishes, combining a non-annual life cycle (no peat-spawning complications), an adaptable constitution, and genuine visual appeal in a small footprint. A group of six or more in a 40-litre or larger aquarium with fine-leaved plants and subdued lighting allows the iridescent eye-patches to show to best effect; the fish are upper-column schoolers and use the full width of the tank. They are non-aggressive toward tankmates of similar size and temperament — small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, or other peaceful West African stream species are suitable companions.

Water should be clean and well-filtered, with gentle flow; lampeyes are not tolerant of poor water quality despite their wide chemical range. Temperature of 73–79 °F suits them in captivity, with pH 6.5–7.0 ideal, though tank-bred fish adapt to neutral, moderately hard tap water without difficulty. The species is long-established in the hobby and tank-raised stock is readily available through specialist killifish societies including the American Killifish Association, making wild-caught specimens unnecessary.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Poropanchax normani as Least Concern (LC) in its 2019 evaluation (Assessment ID 135022861, Taxon ID 182687), citing stable populations across a wide distribution spanning at least 11 countries and 55 documented collection localities in West and Central Africa. The breadth of the range, spanning from Senegal to Sudan, provides a meaningful buffer against localised threats that affect more narrowly endemic West African killies.

Nonetheless, the habitats this species occupies — shallow savannah swamps and small seasonal rivers — are under incremental pressure from agricultural conversion, wetland drainage for irrigation, and the spread of invasive species including mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which have been introduced across sub-Saharan Africa for mosquito control and compete aggressively with small native surface-feeders. The LC status reflects the current picture across the full range; individual drainage-scale populations may face more acute local pressures. Continued survey work to verify range persistence, particularly at peripheral collection localities in the Sahel fringe where habitat is most vulnerable to seasonal drought intensification, is a reasonable conservation priority.
