Taxonomy & naming
Poropanchax scheeli was originally described by Roman in 1971. For much of the decades following its description, the species was placed in or associated with the genus Micropanchax, a broad and heterogeneous assemblage of small African lampeye killifishes whose boundaries were long debated. A 2004 paper by Wildekamp and Malumbres in Cybium resolved the nomenclatural confusion by formally identifying scheeli as a Poropanchax and clarifying its position within a revised generic arrangement. The valid name, following Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences), is Poropanchax scheeli (Roman, 1971), with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species has been moved from its original generic placement.
The genus Poropanchax belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes and lampeyes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Within Nothobranchiidae, the lampeye clade is characterised by the iridescent supraorbital patch of specialised chromatophores that reflect blue-green light, a feature that gives the group its common name and that functions in intraspecific signalling in the dim, tea-stained waters the lampeyes often inhabit. Poropanchax is a small genus of West and Central African lampeyes; scheeli is one of its better-known representatives in the aquarium hobby, though it has never been as widely traded as the more common West African lampeye species.
Morphology
Poropanchax scheeli is a slender, fusiform killifish with pronounced sexual size dimorphism: FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.5 in for males and 1 in for males and females respectively, with females consistently smaller and more subdued in coloration. The body profile is typical of the Poropanchax lampeyes — slim and torpedo-shaped, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding, and fins set well back toward the tail.
The defining morphological feature is the iridescent blue-green lampeye spot above the pupil, formed by a patch of guanine-rich cells that reflect incident light as a turquoise or emerald gleam. This patch is present in both sexes but is typically more vivid in males. Males additionally develop brighter body colouration — a silvery or golden body sheen with enhanced fin colouration — while females are plainer and more translucent. Sexual dimorphism extends to fin morphology, with males showing more developed unpaired fins relative to their body size. The overall impression is of a delicate, almost transparent schooling fish that comes alive under good lighting when the lampeye patches fire their characteristic green-blue signal.
Habitat
The native range of Poropanchax scheeli spans southwestern Nigeria eastward across the Niger River delta to the Cameroon border, continues into the lower Lomé and Kienke drainages of southwestern Cameroon, and extends south into the Rio Utonde and Rio Benito drainages of Equatorial Guinea — a coastal forest zone running from the Niger delta to the Bight of Biafra. Within this range the species occupies a notably broad gradient of freshwater and brackish habitats: FishBase documents it from freshwater rivers, forest-shaded brooks, and weedy areas under forest cover, but also from brackish water environments — river mouths, lagoons, and estuaries near the coast.
This tolerance of brackish conditions is unusual among small killifishes and likely reflects the coastal, lowland nature of the drainages it inhabits, where tidal influence can extend well inland during dry season low-water periods. In freshwater settings the preferred habitat is the slow-moving, heavily vegetated marginal water of streams and rivers — areas of overhanging riparian vegetation, trailing roots, and emergent macrophytes — where the fish school in mid-water and at the surface. FishBase gives water parameters of pH 5.8–7.2 and temperature 75–82 °F for the species, consistent with the warm, moderately soft to neutral lowland streams of the Upper Guinean forest zone and the Cross-Niger transition forests.
Feeding
Poropanchax scheeli feeds at or near the water surface, a habit consistent with its upturned mouth morphology and its preference for vegetated marginal habitats where small invertebrates and microorganisms are abundant at the surface film. In nature the diet consists primarily of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and surface-fallen insects — supplemented by whatever micro-invertebrates occur among the fine-leaved plants and roots of its preferred habitat.
In the aquarium the species presents few feeding challenges, readily accepting suitably sized live and frozen foods. Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worm, glass worm (Chaoborus larvae), and finely crushed quality flake or micro-pellet all work well. Because Poropanchax scheeli is a small fish — females at 1 in are among the smaller lampeyes — food particle size is important; anything too large will be ignored or attempted and then spat out. The species does best with multiple small feedings daily rather than a single large one, mimicking the continuous opportunistic feeding of a schooling surface fish in its native habitat.
Mating
Poropanchax scheeli is a non-annual lampeye: it inhabits permanent water bodies and has no diapause phase in its life cycle. Rather than producing drought-resistant eggs buried in substrate — the strategy of annual killifishes from seasonal pools — it is a continuous, open-ended spawner that deposits small numbers of adhesive eggs at a time among fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, or tangled root masses, returning to spawn again and again over an extended period.
Males in breeding condition display vigorously to females and to rival males, extending their fins and intensifying the blue-green lampeye flash to establish position within the school's loose social hierarchy. Courtship involves parallel swimming and display posturing rather than prolonged pursuit. The mating act is brief: a spawning pair positions side by side or slightly wrapped, and one to a few adhesive eggs are deposited and fertilised before the pair separates. This low-volume, high-frequency spawning strategy spreads reproductive investment across time and reduces the cost of any single spawning failure — a significant advantage in the fluctuating wetland margins and estuarine habitats the species occupies. The American Killifish Association records 17 collection localities across the species' range, suggesting that hobbyist populations may preserve meaningful geographic diversity.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, breeding Poropanchax scheeli follows the standard non-annual lampeye protocol. A small group — one male and two or three females, or a single pair — is conditioned on live and frozen foods in a tank furnished with fine-leaved plants (Javanese moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops) that provide egg-deposition sites. Spawning occurs continuously at low intensity: each day a handful of adhesive eggs will be found attached to plant fronds or mop fibres, though they are small and can be difficult to spot without a close search.
Eggs can be left in the spawning tank if it is thickly planted and the adults are well fed, reducing egg predation — though some attrition from the parents should be expected. Alternatively, plants or mops can be removed to a small hatching container of similar water composition. Incubation at 77–79 °F takes approximately 10–14 days. Newly hatched fry are tiny and require first foods of appropriate scale: infusoria, commercial fry powder, or green water for the first days, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worm, and vinegar eels as they grow. Growth is steady in warm, clean, well-fed conditions. FishBase notes that the species is considered very difficult to maintain in captivity, suggesting attention to water quality, temperature stability, and diet is more critical for this species than for hardier lampeyes.
In the aquarium
FishBase flags Poropanchax scheeli as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a rating that reflects the species' sensitivity rather than any aggressive behaviour. It is a peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; singletons or pairs will be stressed and rarely display or spawn. Tankmates, if used, must be small and non-threatening: other micro-fish of comparable size (small rasboras, tiny tetras, diminutive corydoras), but in dedicated setups the species is best kept alone or with other lampeyes to observe its natural schooling and display behaviour without competition.
The aquarium should be mature, heavily planted, and covered — small surface-schooling killifishes are instinctive jumpers. A dark substrate and dim to moderate lighting suit the species well, both reducing stress and making the iridescent lampeye patch far more visible against a dark background. Water should be maintained in the pH 5.8–7.2 range at 75–82 °F; sudden changes in temperature or chemistry are poorly tolerated. Good biological filtration with gentle flow is important — the species naturally inhabits weedy, slow-moving or still water, and a strong current will stress the fish. Its tolerance of mild brackish conditions (river mouths, estuaries) makes it unusual among small African killifishes and means it may also be kept in very slightly brackish water, though this is not required.
The difficulty rating and limited trade presence mean Poropanchax scheeli is primarily found in specialist killifish circles rather than the general aquarium market. The American Killifish Association and affiliated European killifish societies maintain hobbyist stocks from multiple collection localities, making species-true specimens available through member exchanges — the preferred route for acquiring a fish of this calibre.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Poropanchax scheeli as Least Concern in September 2019, citing a sufficiently wide distribution — covering southwestern Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, with 17 recorded localities — and no evidence of a population decline rapid enough to qualify for a threatened category. The species' tolerance of brackish estuarine and lagoonal habitats as well as freshwater gives it access to a broader niche than many small forest-stream killifishes, adding resilience to its distribution.
Nevertheless, the habitats on which it depends — lowland forest streams, coastal wetlands, river margins in the Niger delta region and the Cross-Niger transition forests of southwestern Nigeria and Cameroon — are under sustained pressure. Deforestation for agriculture and timber, urban and peri-urban wetland drainage, water extraction, and the expansion of the Niger delta's oil infrastructure all degrade the shallow, vegetated, low-velocity habitats that Poropanchax scheeli and other small lampeyes require. The introduction of invasive fish species, particularly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) into West African coastal waters, adds predation and competition pressure in disturbed systems. Equatorial Guinea's drainages, though less developed, face growing deforestation pressure. The current Least Concern status should be revisited as updated survey data emerge from this understudied region.
