Taxonomy & naming
Poropanchax rancureli was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1964, and the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has been reassigned from its original genus since description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Poropanchax rancureli (Daget, 1964). The genus Poropanchax belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the large African killifish family that encompasses both the spectacular annual killifish of seasonal savanna pools and the less-studied but diverse lampeye assemblages of permanent forest waters.
The specific epithet honours Dr Paul G. Rancurel, a zoologist attached to the French Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer (ORSTOM), the colonial-era research body responsible for a large body of West African natural-history collecting. Naming a species after Rancurel was a common way to recognise ORSTOM's field workers, and several West African fish species bear his name.
Within Poropanchax, rancureli is one of a number of small West African lampeyes whose taxonomy continues to be refined as molecular data accumulate. The American Killifish Association (AKA) lists the species under Class 14 (Old World killifish) and documents sixteen journal articles in the JAKA covering it, reflecting the interest this attractive but challenging species has generated in the specialist killifish hobby over the decades since its formal description.
Morphology
Poropanchax rancureli is a slender, elongate killifish reaching a maximum total length of 2 in (FishBase). The body is laterally compressed and tapers to a pointed caudal peduncle carrying a long, lyre-like caudal fin — a shape typical of the lampeye group and one that makes the fish appear larger than its actual size. Meristic counts from FishBase record 6–8 dorsal fin rays, 11–15 anal fin rays, and 27–29 mid-lateral scales.
Coloration is strongly sexually dimorphic. Males display two iridescent blue-green reflective bands along the flanks — one above the lateral midline and one below it — that shift in intensity depending on lighting angle and the fish's mood. The dorsal and anal fins are pale green to yellow-orange, sometimes with a reddish margin; the caudal fin is yellow-orange with red margins and can show dark red spotting. The reflective blue-green patch above the iris — the defining lampeye characteristic, produced by a light-organ of specialised iridophores — is present in both sexes but most conspicuous in males.
Females are translucent grey with a silver-grey ventral surface and colourless fins. The disparity between the sexes is wide enough that unpaired fish are often initially identified as different species by inexperienced observers. Both sexes have relatively large eyes for their body size, a feature characteristic of fish living in shaded forest streams where low light levels put a premium on visual acuity.
Habitat
Poropanchax rancureli occupies the coastal-plain forest zone of the Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot. Its confirmed distribution spans the lower Tano River in Ghana and a series of drainages along the Ivory Coast coastline including the lower Comoé, Banco, Boudo, Bia, Mé, lower Bandama, lower Sassandra, and Cavally rivers; FishBase also notes a possible occurrence in extreme southeastern Liberia based on the continuity of suitable habitat across the border.
Within these drainages the species is associated specifically with small rivers and brooks flowing through swampy lowland rainforest on coastal plains. This is permanent, flowing or slow-moving water rather than the seasonally desiccating pools that support annual killifish. Forest-canopy shade keeps water temperatures moderate and maintains the soft, slightly acidic to neutral chemistry characteristic of the habitat: FishBase records a pH range of 5.8–7.2 and temperatures of 75–79 °F. Hobbyist breeding records suggest the species may tolerate and even prefer temperatures somewhat lower than the wild field measurements — one experienced breeder reports successful spawning at 68–73 °F, possibly reflecting a dry-season or upland-tributary optimum that is not well-captured in the published field data.
The forest-stream habitat places rancureli in an ecological guild quite distinct from the open-country annual killifish for which West Africa is most famous in the hobby. Its waters are clear, well-shaded, and permanent — more akin to a temperate chalk stream than a savanna floodplain pool — and the management of a stable permanent-water aquarium is the appropriate model for keeping this species.
Feeding
In the wild, Poropanchax rancureli feeds primarily on small invertebrates — zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and small surface invertebrates — consistent with its trophic level of 3.2 recorded on FishBase. The relatively small mouth and the association with clear, permanently flowing water suggest the fish is a visual feeder that picks individual prey items from the water column and surface film rather than a filter-feeder or bottom-sifter.
In captivity, lampeyes of this size class respond well to a varied diet of live and frozen small invertebrates. Daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms are all appropriate staples; frozen bloodworm can be offered in moderation. A high-protein diet is particularly valuable as a spawning stimulus — hobbyist accounts specifically note that rich feeding encourages egg production in this species, which is otherwise described as modest in its spawning output. Dry foods are accepted by many individuals but should not constitute the majority of the diet for breeding fish.
Mating
Poropanchax rancureli is a non-annual lampeye with continuous, non-seasonal reproduction tied to permanent forest streams. There is no diapause, no desiccation-resistant egg phase, and no programmed annual lifecycle — the fish spawns repeatedly over an extended period whenever conditions are suitable, in the manner typical of lampeyes and other permanent-water killifish.
Courting males display intensely, orientating toward females and angling the body to maximise the iridescent sheen of the lateral bands and the blue reflective iris patch. The lampeye light organ is thought to function as a species-recognition and mate-quality signal in the shaded, visually complex forest-stream environment where these fish live. Males court actively but are not reported as aggressively territorial in the manner of some other killifish; maintaining a group with a slight male skew in a well-planted tank gives females space to avoid persistent pursuit.
Spawning occurs in fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, with the pair depositing a small number of adhesive eggs at each pass. Productivity per session is modest: hobbyist accounts flag poor egg production as the main practical difficulty with this species, distinguishing it from more prolific plant-spawners. Patience and optimal conditioning — particularly a rich invertebrate diet — are the reported keys to consistent output.
Breeding
Eggs are placed individually or in small clusters among fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops to which they adhere. Because the species inhabits permanent, flowing water in the wild, the eggs do not require any form of diapause or dry storage — unlike annual killifish eggs, they develop continuously and will hatch within approximately two to three weeks at breeding temperature.
Hobbyist records (killi.co.uk) document successful breeding in moderately soft, slightly acidic water at 68–73 °F. A group of more than fifteen individuals is recommended to provide the social dynamics — paired pursuit, spawning stimulus from the presence of rivals — that encourage consistent reproduction. The tank must be tightly lidded: this species is prone to jumping, and gaps in the cover will result in losses. Clean, well-filtered water with moderate surface movement replicates the flowing-stream conditions of the natural habitat and keeps the fish in spawning condition.
Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry food for the first week, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once size permits. Growth is relatively slow compared with annual killifish, consistent with the permanent-water life history. Adults should be removed or eggs transferred to a separate rearing vessel, as adults will consume eggs and fry. The modest egg production per clutch means that building up a stock of rancureli requires consistent effort over several months rather than a single successful spawning.
In the aquarium
Poropanchax rancureli is regarded as a rewarding but moderately demanding species in the specialist killifish hobby. FishBase notes that it is difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a rating that reflects the species' sensitivity to water-quality lapses rather than any requirement for unusual chemistry. Hobbyist accounts consistently emphasise the need for clean, well-filtered water, a tight-fitting lid (jumping is a constant risk), and a group of at least fifteen or more individuals to support natural social behaviour and encourage spawning.
The ideal aquarium replicates the shaded, clear-water forest-stream habitat: a densely planted tank with fine-leaved plants such as Ceratopteris or Java moss, subdued lighting, a gentle flow, and soft to moderately hard water in the pH 5.8–7.2 range at 68–79 °F. A species-only or lampeye-species setup is preferable to a mixed community; the fish is small, peaceful, and easily outcompeted for food by larger or more assertive tankmates. A dark substrate enhances the visibility of the males' iridescent coloration.
Spawning mops of dark wool can supplement or replace live plants for egg collection. The species is listed as a commercial aquarium trade species on FishBase, but it is not common in the trade and is more often encountered through specialist killifish clubs and the AKA than through general retailers. Given its habitat in a biodiversity-rich but increasingly threatened West African forest zone, maintaining captive breeding lines has conservation value beyond the aesthetic.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Poropanchax rancureli as Least Concern in November 2019, finding no major threats to the population as of that date. The assessment reflects a species that is moderately widespread across several coastal West African drainages — the Tano, Comoé, Banco, Boudo, Bia, Mé, Bandama, Sassandra, and Cavally basins — and has not demonstrated measurable population decline attributable to a specific threat.
Nonetheless, the species occupies the Upper Guinea forest zone, one of the world's most threatened tropical forest regions. Deforestation, agricultural encroachment, and conversion of coastal lowlands for oil palm, cocoa, and rubber cultivation have dramatically reduced forest cover in Ivory Coast and Ghana over recent decades. The small forest streams and swampy rainforest waterways that rancureli depends on are particularly vulnerable to the removal of riparian canopy, which raises water temperatures, increases sedimentation, and alters the hydrology of small catchments. Introduction of invasive species — most significantly the Nile tilapia and various invasive mosquitofish — into West African coastal streams poses an additional predation and competition pressure on small killifish.
The species' absence from the lists of the most urgently threatened West African fish does not mean its habitat is secure. The IUCN assessment from 2019 should be understood against a backdrop of ongoing forest loss, and regular reassessment of the species' status is warranted as land-use change continues across its range.
