Poropanchax pepo is a tiny lampeye killifish — barely 1 in standard length — described in 2019 from wetlands immediately adjacent to Inga Falls on the lower Congo River, making it the southernmost known member of its genus and the only Poropanchax found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its nearest congener populations lie in Gabon, roughly 435 mi to the north, a striking biogeographic gap that makes this fish both scientifically interesting and ecologically fragile. Males are distinguished by a humeral blotch and warm orange-suffused dorsal and unpaired fins — the pumpkin hue that inspired its epithet.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropanchax pepo was formally described in 2019 in American Museum Novitates (No. 3941) by Van der Zee, Bernotas, Bragança, and Stiassny, based on specimens collected from a wetland adjacent to Inga Falls, Kongo Central Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The genus Poropanchax belongs to the subfamily Aplocheilichthyinae within the family Poeciliidae (sensu the broadened classification that absorbs many former aplocheilid groups), and it represents a five-species clade restricted to humid coastal and sub-coastal drainages of West and West-Central Africa.

The new species was distinguished from its four congeners by a suite of morphological characters: a higher dorsal-fin to anal-fin ray ratio, rounded (rather than pointed) anal and dorsal fins, the presence of a humeral blotch in males, and the absence of a sharp ventral process on the basipterygium. The holotype, AMNH 267246, is a male deposited in the American Museum of Natural History. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Poropanchax pepo Van der Zee, Bernotas, Bragança & Stiassny, 2019.

The species was initially confused with or compared to the West African Micropanchax scheeli; the description paper also addressed the identity of that species, clarifying the limits of both taxa. The isolation of P. pepo — roughly 435 mi from the nearest known Poropanchax locality in Gabon — was unexpected and underlines how poorly explored the aquatic ichthyofauna of the lower Congo basin remains.

Morphology

Poropanchax pepo is a miniature fish, reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length (SL) — typical for the lampeye group, whose members are among the smallest killifishes in Africa. The body is slender and laterally compressed, as in other aplocheilichthyine lampeyes, with the characteristic iridescent blue-green light-organ patch above the pupil that gives the group its common name.

The most diagnostically useful features in males are the humeral blotch — a dark marking on the shoulder behind the operculum — and the rounded outlines of both the dorsal and anal fins, which separate P. pepo from the more pointed-finned relatives found farther north. The dorsal-to-anal fin ray count ratio is higher than in congeners. Males display warm orange suffusion on the dorsum and the unpaired fins; this pigmentation was the inspiration for the species name. Females are plainer, lacking the humeral blotch and with subdued coloration — a consistent pattern across aplocheilichthyine lampeyes.

Habitat

The type locality is the Fwamalo River, situated approximately 3 mi northeast of Inga village, Kongo Central Province, DRC. This small stream drains into the lower Congo River system close to Inga Falls, one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth. The collection site was a stagnant side channel with a sandy and boulder-strewn substrate, lying about 591 ft from the main Congo River channel. Water conditions recorded at collection: temperature approximately 75 °F, pH around 7, and hardness around 10 dGH — slightly soft, near-neutral freshwater consistent with the lower Congo's generally well-mineralised but not extreme chemistry.

The habitat described — a quiet, vegetated wetland margin adjacent to a large river — is characteristic of West and Central African lampeye micro-habitats: sheltered from strong current, with organic debris and aquatic vegetation providing both food and spawning substrate. The proximity to the main Congo channel suggests the population may be restricted to suitable marginal wetlands rather than occupying the river itself, making it vulnerable to any disturbance that drains or alters those wetlands.

Feeding

Like other aplocheilichthyine lampeyes, Poropanchax pepo is understood to feed on small invertebrates and microalgae. FishBase records the diet as small invertebrates and algae. At its maximum size of 1 in, the mouth is tiny and prey items are correspondingly minute: midge larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, zooplankton, and associated organic detritus are the likely natural food base in the stagnant marginal wetland it occupies.

In aquaria, lampeyes in this size class are routinely maintained on small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), micro worms, Daphnia, and similarly fine invertebrate prey. Dry foods are accepted if the particle size is appropriate. Because of the tiny mouth, oversize or coarse foods are unsuitable.

Mating

Poropanchax pepo is a non-annual lampeye — it inhabits permanent water and does not produce diapausing eggs. Lampeyes of the genus Poropanchax are continuous or extended-season spawners: rather than concentrating reproduction into a brief wet-season burst, they spawn repeatedly over weeks to months, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs at a time.

Male lampeyes typically display to females with the flanks angled to catch light on the iridescent supraorbital spot — the light organ — and with fins spread to show pigmentation. In P. pepo, the male's humeral blotch and orange fin coloration are likely components of the courtship display, as analogous markings in related species have been noted to be context-dependent in intensity. Pair formation is temporary; no long-term pair bond or territory defence around a spawning site has been described for Poropanchax species.

Breeding

As a non-annual plant-spawner, Poropanchax pepo deposits small batches of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or soft substrate debris over an extended period — the same pattern documented across West African aplocheilichthyine lampeyes. Eggs are small, transparent to pale, and adhesive, attaching individually or in loose clusters to plant material. There is no parental care; adults may consume eggs and should be separated from spawning substrate if raising fry intentionally.

Incubation under tropical conditions (around 75 °F) typically spans two to three weeks for Poropanchax-grade eggs. Larvae hatch at a very small size and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry powder — before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Growth is steady in warm, clean water. The non-annual life history means the species can potentially be maintained as a self-sustaining aquarium colony, unlike annual killifish, which require peat incubation and dry storage of eggs between generations.

In the aquarium

Poropanchax pepo is an uncommon species in the hobby but is maintained by specialist lampeye and African killifish keepers. Its small size (1 in SL) makes it suitable for nano or species-only aquaria; it should not be housed with significantly larger fish. Like other lampeyes, it is a schooling species and benefits from being kept in groups of six or more, which reduces individual stress and brings out natural shoaling and display behaviour.

Water conditions should approximate the type locality: temperature 72–79 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5, softish to moderately hard water. Dense planting with fine-leaved vegetation (Java moss, hornwort, or floating plants with trailing roots) provides both spawning sites and refuge. The tank should be securely covered — killifish are accomplished jumpers. Lighting can be moderate; the iridescent supraorbital spot is best appreciated under good directional light. Feed small live or frozen invertebrates as the primary diet, supplemented with appropriately fine dried foods.

Because this species was described only in 2019 and is known from a single locality, captive specimens are primarily held by killifish society members and specialist breeders rather than the general trade. Killi-Data records it as a lampeye of the lower Congo, and distribution within the hobby is accordingly limited.

Conservation

Poropanchax pepo has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no published conservation status. The species is known from a single locality — a stagnant wetland channel adjacent to Inga Falls, about 3 mi from Inga village, Kongo Central Province, DRC. Its entire documented range amounts to one collection site, making it among the most geographically restricted killifish on record and inherently vulnerable to any local disturbance.

The lower Congo region faces a range of anthropogenic pressures: infrastructure development around the Inga hydroelectric complex (Grand Inga dam proposals have been discussed for decades), agricultural encroachment, riparian deforestation, and the general degradation of marginal wetlands. A fish known from a single stagnant side-channel 591 ft from the main river could be eliminated by a single drainage or impoundment event. The biogeographic isolation of P. pepo — 435 mi from the nearest Poropanchax populations in Gabon — means there is no nearby source population from which the lower Congo population could be naturally recolonised. Targeted assessment and ideally the establishment of a captive safety-net colony are warranted given the species' extreme range restriction.
