Taxonomy & naming
Profundulus guatemalensis was described by Albert Günther of the British Museum of Natural History in 1866, based on material from Guatemala. The parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus and later transferred to Profundulus, the only killifish genus endemic to Mesoamerica. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Profundulus guatemalensis (Günther, 1866).
The genus Profundulus belongs to the family Profundulidae, a small Mesoamerican radiation of non-annual toothcarps — the American killifish lineage most closely associated with the highland lakes and rivers of Central America rather than the coastal lowland and seasonal-pool habitats favoured by many of their relatives. Profundulidae is considered the sister group to the large northern clade that includes Fundulus and its allies. The genus currently contains around eight to ten recognised species distributed from Guatemala south to Costa Rica.
The species epithet guatemalensis is simply a Latinised toponym meaning 'of Guatemala', referring to the country from which the type material was collected. No subspecies are formally recognised, though populations from different lake systems may show geographic variation in colour and body proportions.
Morphology
Profundulus guatemalensis is a medium-sized killifish reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 3 in (FishBase), making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is moderately elongate and compressed, with a blunt, slightly upturned snout and a dorsally positioned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding.
Colouration in males is attractively marked: a brownish-olive or greenish dorsal surface transitions to silvery or bluish-silver flanks, which may carry a series of narrow vertical bars or lateral spots depending on the population and condition. The fins, particularly the dorsal and caudal fins, often show yellow-orange edging or speckling in breeding males. Females are plainer — olive-brown to buff, with less vivid fin pigmentation and a deeper, more rounded belly when gravid. Sexual dimorphism is thus present but moderate; the dorsal fin position (set further forward in males) and overall body depth are the most reliable morphological separators outside of breeding colour.
Habitat
Profundulus guatemalensis occupies permanent lakes, rivers, and highland streams across a relatively compact range in northern Central America — Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and El Salvador. It is a benthopelagic species, occupying the water column from the surface down to near-bottom depending on activity and feeding, rather than being a dedicated bottom-dweller or strict surface fish.
Lake Amatitlán in Guatemala (elevation approximately 1,610 ft above sea level) is one of the most thoroughly documented natural localities for this species. The lake is a volcanic caldera system with naturally alkaline, moderately hard water: pH values in the range of 7.9–8.2 and temperatures that fluctuate between approximately 26 and 84 °F across a natural daily cycle have been recorded at lake surface level. These parameters reflect the volcanic geology of the Guatemalan highlands and stand in marked contrast to the soft, acidic conditions often assumed for killifishes as a group. The species is categorically not a blackwater or peat-bog fish.
At higher elevations within its range, stream and river habitats tend toward cooler temperatures — hobbyist sources such as Killi.co.uk report a captive water temperature range of 68–81 °F, suggesting that slightly cooler conditions than the surface values measured at Amatitlán are tolerated and perhaps preferred by populations from higher-altitude tributaries. Water is consistently moderately hard and alkaline across documented localities.
Feeding
In the wild, Profundulus guatemalensis feeds as a generalised opportunist across the water column, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth is well suited to surface feeding on fallen terrestrial insects as well as emergent invertebrate prey. Its benthopelagic lifestyle means mid-water invertebrates are equally accessible.
In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and chironomid larvae are all taken with enthusiasm. Dried foods are also accepted, particularly if the fish is established in the tank and conditioned to them. Varied feeding with a mix of live or frozen invertebrates and quality dried food maintains colour and breeding condition.
Mating
Profundulus guatemalensis is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent, year-round water bodies and does not bury eggs in mud that dries seasonally. Its reproductive strategy is accordingly that of a sustained plant-spawner rather than a peat-burying annual. Pairs court over a period of days, with the male displaying to the female and pursuing her through the vegetation or along spawning mops. Courtship is relatively gentle; hobbyist accounts characterise the species as peaceful and suitable for a community of similarly sized fish.
Both the male's breeding colour — intensified fin pigmentation and lateral markings — and his positioning beneath or alongside the female serve as courtship signals. Pair bonds appear comparatively stable, and conditioning pairs together in a species tank with adequate cover is the standard approach. There is no territorial aggression toward the female of the kind seen in some more combative killifish genera.
Breeding
The pair spawns over an extended period, depositing adhesive eggs individually onto fine-leaved plant material, floating roots, or artificial spawning mops positioned at or near the water surface. Each spawning session adds a small number of eggs rather than a single mass clutch; over days and weeks the female may produce several dozen to a few hundred eggs total. This slow, incremental egg deposition is typical of non-annual plant-spawners and contrasts sharply with the large single clutches of annual peat-spawners.
Eggs incubate submerged in water — no drying, no diapause, no peat storage. Incubation takes approximately two to three weeks at typical aquarium temperatures in the 72–79 °F range. Newly hatched fry are small and benefit from infusoria or very fine powdered fry food for the first few days before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The Guatemalan killifish is noted as difficult to maintain in aquarium settings by FishBase — an assessment that reflects its specific water-chemistry requirements rather than aggression or disease susceptibility. The key demand is alkaline, moderately hard water in the 7.8–8.2 pH range, replicating the volcanic highland lake chemistry of its native range. Soft or acidic water quickly undermines condition. Regular water changes with appropriately mineralised, slightly alkaline water are more important than elaborate filtration.
Temperature should be kept in the 68–81 °F range; the upper end suits lowland Lake Amatitlán populations, while slightly cooler temperatures around 68–73 °F may better suit highland stream fish. The species does not tolerate the warm temperatures appropriate for tropical community tanks, making it best housed in a dedicated setup rather than mixed with common tropical fish.

Tankmates from the same Central American highland ecoregion — if available — are the most ecologically coherent choice. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Profundulus guatemalensis as Vulnerable (VU) in August 2019, under criterion B1ab(iii) — meaning the species' extent of occurrence is estimated below the threshold for Vulnerable and is inferred to be in continuing decline specifically in the area, extent, or quality of habitat. The volcanic highland lakes and river systems of Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and El Salvador that this species inhabits are under sustained pressure from multiple directions.
Lake Amatitlán, one of the most important documented localities, is one of the most severely polluted lakes in Guatemala: it receives the run-off and sewage of the greater Guatemala City metropolitan area, has lost much of its native aquatic vegetation through eutrophication and toxic algal blooms, and has been subject to introductions of non-native species including Oreochromis and other cichlids that compete with and prey upon native toothcarps. Similar pressures — agricultural run-off, deforestation of watershed vegetation, introduced species, and abstraction for irrigation and domestic use — affect highland river systems across the species' range.
Profundulus guatemalensis is listed on the American Killifish Association species registry and carries some presence in specialist collections, which represents a modest assurance population. However, the species' specific water-chemistry requirements and its restricted natural range mean that targeted habitat protection and water-quality restoration in key lake systems, particularly Lake Amatitlán, are the most meaningful conservation actions.
