Profundulus kreiseri is a rare, narrowly endemic killifish confined to small, fast-moving highland tributaries of the Chamelecón and Ulúa river systems in northwestern Honduras. Described by Matamoros and colleagues in 2009 and assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 2019, this non-annual species occupies clear-water streams with stone and boulder substrates beneath dense riparian canopy — a specialised microhabitat under direct pressure from a planned hydroelectric dam on the Chamelecón River. Its restricted range, encompassing just two known collection localities, makes it one of Central America's most conservation-significant killifishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Profundulus kreiseri was formally described by Wilfredo A. Matamoros, Scott A. Schaefer, Caleb D. Hernández, and Prosanta Chakrabarty in 2009. The genus Profundulus is placed within the family Profundulidae, the Central American killifishes — a small, exclusively Mesoamerican lineage distinct from both the North American Fundulidae and the South American and West African annual killifish families. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Profundulus kreiseri Matamoros, Schaefer, Hernández & Chakrabarty, 2009.

The type locality is recorded at approximately 15.197667°N, 88.616°W, within the Chamelecón River drainage of northwestern Honduras. A second known population exists in the Ulúa River system, south of the Motagua divide, placing the species wholly within the Atlantic-slope highlands of Honduras. The 2012 ZooKeys publication by Matamoros and colleagues provided expanded morphological and distributional documentation.

The species epithet kreiseri honours Dr. Brian R. Kreiser, in recognition of his contributions to the ichthyology of the region. The genus name Profundulus is derived from the Latin profundus (deep, in the sense of profound or meaningful) combined with the Greek -ulus diminutive suffix, reflecting the original concept of a small but ecologically significant killifish group.

Morphology

Profundulus kreiseri reaches a maximum of 3 in standard length (FishBase), with the male holotype measuring 2 in SL and a total length of 3 in recorded from type material. In overall body plan it is a moderately elongate, fusiform killifish typical of the genus Profundulus — more robust than many annual killifishes but without the extreme dorso-ventral compression seen in some surface-feeding species.

Fin placement and body proportions follow the Profundulidae family pattern: a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, rounded caudal fin, and the upturned mouth characteristic of a fish that feeds at or near the water surface and in the water column. Detailed colour descriptions are limited in available literature; males in breeding condition in related Profundulus species typically show intensified lateral banding or speckling, and sexual dimorphism is modest, with females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid.

The species shares with its congeners an overall robustness suited to life in fast-flowing stream habitats — firmer musculature and a heavier build than the delicate annual killifishes with which it may be compared in the hobby context.

Habitat

Profundulus kreiseri inhabits small tributaries of the Chamelecón and Ulúa river systems in the highlands of northwestern Honduras, the only two drainage systems in which it has been recorded. Field data from the original description and the ZooKeys 2012 documentation characterise the occupied streams as 0.8–4 metres wide with a variety of microhabitat types — runs, pools, riffles, rapids, and waterfalls — across a mosaic of stream-flow conditions.

Substrate is predominantly stone, pebble, and boulder, with the riffle and rapid zones most characteristic of the species' core habitat. Riparian canopy cover is dense, measured at 70–80% in surveyed localities, providing both shade and leaf-litter input that supports the invertebrate base on which the fish feeds. Water chemistry at type-locality sites is near-neutral to slightly alkaline: pH 7.2, temperature 77 °F, and hardness of approximately 5 dH — soft to moderately soft, clear highland water that differs markedly from the acidic blackwater conditions associated with many West African and South American annual killifishes.

This is a cool, well-oxygenated, structurally complex highland-stream environment, and the species is specifically adapted to it. It does not occur in the warmer, larger main-channel rivers, still water, or lowland environments.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Profundulus kreiseri specifically are lacking in available literature. In common with its congeners and with non-annual killifishes generally, the species is expected to be an opportunistic carnivore feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mayfly and stonefly nymphs appropriate to the riffle habitats it occupies), terrestrial insects falling to the water surface, small crustaceans, and similar invertebrate prey.

The dense riparian canopy at 70–80% cover documented at collection sites produces a continuous rain of terrestrial arthropods onto the stream surface, a resource heavily exploited by stream killifishes throughout the neotropics. The upturned mouth typical of Profundulus facilitates surface feeding on both aquatic and terrestrial prey items.

In aquarium settings, members of the genus accept live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia, chironomid larvae, and small earthworms — alongside high-quality dried foods of appropriate particle size. A varied diet with a strong invertebrate component best reflects the natural foraging mode.

Mating

Profundulus kreiseri is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the annual species that breed explosively in ephemeral pools and bury diapausing eggs in substrate before the dry season, Profundulus inhabits permanent or near-permanent highland streams and follows the non-annual reproductive mode shared across the Profundulidae family: plant or mop spawning in which pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or spawning mops over extended periods, with eggs incubating in water without any diapause phase.

Males court females with lateral displays, spreading their fins and exhibiting any species-specific colour intensification. Spawning is not a single synchronised event but occurs in repeated, low-volume episodes over days or weeks — the characteristic pattern of plant-spawning killifishes. This extended spawning mode suits the stable, year-round stream habitats the species occupies, where there is no seasonal drying pressure that would select for rapid, explosive reproduction.

Sexual maturity and the onset of active spawning condition in the wild are presumably linked to seasonal temperature and rainfall cycles in the Honduran highlands, though no specific behavioural studies of this species have been published.

Breeding

As a non-annual plant-spawner, Profundulus kreiseri deposits small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, aquatic mosses, or synthetic spawning mops. Eggs incubate submerged in water at ambient temperature — no peat burial, no diapause, no desiccation phase. At the natural water temperature of approximately 77 °F, incubation periods for non-annual killifishes of this type typically span 10–18 days, with fry emerging fully formed and immediately capable of accepting small live foods.

In an aquarium setting the pair can be set up in a heavily planted or mop-equipped breeding tank; eggs should be checked and collected regularly to prevent predation by the adults. Fry are straightforward to raise on infusoria, commercial fry food, and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, progressing to increasingly large live and frozen foods as they grow. The species' stream origin — cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with modest hardness around pH 7 — should be replicated in the breeding setup for best results.

Profundulus kreiseri has been kept and bred in specialist killifish collections, but it is not a common aquarium fish. Its conservation status and restricted wild population make responsible husbandry and the maintenance of captive colonies of additional importance — hobby-held populations can serve as a buffer against wild decline.

In the aquarium

Profundulus kreiseri is an uncommon killifish in the hobby, encountered primarily among specialist American Killifish Association members and collectors focusing on Mesoamerican species. It is a non-annual fish with a comparatively long lifespan relative to annual killifishes, and it rewards patient, attentive husbandry rather than the rapid spawn-collect cycle of the annual species.

Aquarium conditions should replicate the cool, clear, well-oxygenated highland streams of northwestern Honduras: a temperature around 72–79 °F (the natural site value of 77 °F provides a target), pH near neutral (6.8–7.4), soft to moderately soft water (around 5 dH as measured at collection sites), and strong water movement to maintain oxygenation. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants such as Myriophyllum or Java moss provides both cover and spawning sites. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory — like all killifishes, this species is an accomplished jumper.

Because the wild population is small and under documented threat, hobbyists who acquire Profundulus kreiseri are encouraged to participate in the American Killifish Association's species-maintenance programmes, share surplus fish within the specialist network, and maintain accurate records of the fish's lineage and origin. Keeping the captive population genetically diverse and well-documented is a meaningful conservation contribution for a fish of this rarity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Profundulus kreiseri as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) — the assessment was completed on 12 August 2019 by Tim Lyons (Albuquerque Biopark), Enrique Barraza, and Wilfredo A. Matamoros (Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas). The B1 criterion reflects a severely restricted extent of occurrence combined with evidence of habitat decline; the ab(iii) qualifier identifies the specific driver as the continuing deterioration of habitat quality.

The most acute documented threat is the proposed hydroelectric dam on the Chamelecón River, one of only two river systems in which the species is known. Dam construction would directly alter or eliminate the stream-flow conditions, substrate character, and riparian integrity on which the species depends. With only two known collection localities across its entire range, any significant degradation of either site could constitute a population-level event. The 70–80% canopy cover that characterises occupied sites is itself a feature of intact riparian forest, leaving the species doubly vulnerable to deforestation for agriculture or cattle grazing — a pervasive pressure throughout the Honduran highlands.

No formal in-situ protection programme for this species is documented in the available literature. The small number of collectors maintaining captive populations in specialist killifish circles represents the only ex-situ buffer. Survey work to establish whether additional populations exist within the Chamelecón and Ulúa systems, and formal legal protection for occupied stream reaches, are the most urgent conservation needs identified by the IUCN assessors.
