Taxonomy & naming
Profundulus hildebrandi was formally described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1950, based on material from the highland lakes and streams of the San Cristóbal de las Casas valley in Chiapas, Mexico. The original description was published in Copeia (1950, volume 1, pages 22–30), and the species was placed in the genus Profundulus within the small, exclusively Mesoamerican family Profundulidae — a lineage of killifishes entirely distinct from the unrelated African and South American killi families.
The IUCN Red List recognises this species under the recombined name Tlaloc hildebrandi (Miller, 1950), reflecting a generic revision that transferred several Profundulus populations to the resurrected genus Tlaloc. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Profundulus hildebrandi Miller, 1950 as the original combination; hobbyists and older literature routinely use the Profundulus binomial, and the FishBase and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service pages continue to list it under that name. For consistency with the source literature cited here both names are noted, with Profundulus hildebrandi used as the primary combination.
The genus name Profundulus alludes to the deep, spring-fed nature of the cool highland waters these fishes inhabit — from the Latin profundus, meaning deep or profound. The specific epithet hildebrandi honours the American biologist Samuel Frederick Hildebrand (1883–1949), a prolific ichthyologist of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries who made significant contributions to fish taxonomy in the Americas.
Morphology
Profundulus hildebrandi is a small, moderately compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3 in (FishBase), with most adults in the field considerably smaller; Anzueto-Calvo et al. (2022) report individuals below 5 in standard length in their population study, and typical adults encountered in the wild and in captivity are generally 2–3 in. The body form is elongate and cylindrical — characteristic of the family Profundulidae — with a slightly flattened dorsal profile and an upturned, superior mouth suited for surface feeding.
Colouration in life is typically olive-green to brownish-gold on the flanks, with males displaying brighter hues and often showing faint lateral banding or a series of small dark spots along the sides. The dorsal and caudal fins may carry orange or yellowish pigmentation in sexually active males. Females are plainer, typically a more uniform olive or cream-brown without the males' colour intensification. As a non-annual species, both sexes are comparatively robust and long-lived relative to the diapause-dependent annuals of lowland tropical killifish groups.
Habitat
The Chiapas killifish inhabits the permanent freshwaters of the San Cristóbal de las Casas valley in the Chiapas Highlands, southern Mexico, at elevations above 2,100 metres above sea level. Its known range is extremely restricted: the extent of occurrence is estimated at approximately 1,556 mi² and the area of occupancy at only 72 mi², across three recognised locations. The type locality is Lake Maria Eugenia (Lago María Eugenia), a small spring-fed lake of five to six hectares characterised by shallow water (0–2 ft depth), rocky substrate, abundant aquatic vegetation, and a slight through-current fed by cool springs.
Beyond the lake, the species occurs in permanently flowing spring-fed streams and the vegetated margins of highland wetlands within the basin. The cool, well-oxygenated, vegetation-rich character of these waters sets the Chiapas killifish apart ecologically from lowland tropical killies: it is adapted to the cool, clear, highland spring environment rather than warm or seasonally desiccating habitats. Water temperatures in the San Cristóbal basin are mild year-round given the altitude, and the fish is not a seasonal species dependent on flooding.
The IUCN assessment notes that approximately 60 per cent of the Jovel sub-basin — the hydrological unit containing the core habitat — is now affected by sewage pollution from San Cristóbal de las Casas, one of Chiapas's major cities. The Los Humedales municipal wetland park, established in 2008, provides some formal protection for part of the habitat.
Feeding
The IUCN species assessment records the diet of Profundulus hildebrandi as consisting principally of insect larvae and crustaceans — a diet consistent with the invertebrate-rich vegetation and spring seeps of its highland wetland habitat. The superior (upturned) mouth is well suited to taking prey at or near the water surface, and in vegetated shallows the species likely forages among stems and floating mats for aquatic insects, zooplankton, and small crustaceans.
In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: daphnia, cyclops, mosquito larvae, and small bloodworm are all appropriate. Small sinking or floating prepared foods may also be accepted by established individuals. The fish's small maximum size means that food items should be sized accordingly; oversized prey or feed designed for larger killifishes will be refused or ignored.
Mating
Profundulus hildebrandi is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner: pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and spawning mops near the substrate or within dense vegetation, rather than burying eggs in peat or mud for a diapause period. The IUCN assessment records a breeding season of January through June in the wild, suggesting spawning is broadly associated with the cooler part of the year in this highland system rather than the wet-dry cycle that triggers annual spawners at lower elevations.
Males court females with lateral displays, spreading fins and intensifying colour to signal condition. The pair make brief spawning contacts over the spawning substrate, depositing single eggs or small numbers of eggs at each pass. The eggs are adhesive and are pressed onto plant leaves or fibres; the adults do not guard the clutch. Because spawning is distributed over days or weeks rather than concentrated in a single mass event, the total number of eggs produced per season can be substantial relative to a single-clutch species, though individual clutch sizes are small.
Breeding
Eggs of Profundulus hildebrandi incubate in water at the ambient temperature of the spring-fed highland habitat — there is no diapause and no requirement for a dry storage period, which distinguishes this species fundamentally from the annual killies of lowland tropical America and Africa. Incubation times in cooler highland water are likely longer than in warm tropical aquarium conditions; the eggs are semi-transparent and moderately sized for the family.
FishBase notes that the species is difficult to maintain in the aquarium, implying that replication of its cool, well-oxygenated, and vegetation-rich native conditions is challenging for most hobbyists. For those who do succeed in keeping the fish, breeding requires a well-planted or mop-equipped tank at cooler temperatures — ideally replicating the spring-fed 64–72 °F range of the Chiapas Highlands rather than the warmer conditions standard for tropical aquaria. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods such as paramecia or very fine nauplii. The species is not widely kept or bred in the hobby, and captive populations are rare outside specialist killifish circles.

The Chiapas killifish is rated as difficult to maintain by FishBase, a summary that reflects its specialised ecological requirements rather than any particular fragility. The key challenge is temperature: this is a cool highland species, not a tropical fish, and it requires water in the 64–72 °F range with high dissolved oxygen and good flow — conditions that are straightforward in temperate climates but challenging in warm-room aquariums without chilling equipment.
A species tank or small group setup with dense planting, clean water, and moderate current is the appropriate approach. Fine-leaved plants such as Myriophyllum or Java moss provide both shelter and spawning substrate. The fish are peaceful and can be kept in same-species groups or with other cool-water non-aggressive species, though given its rarity and conservation status, most serious keepers focus on maintaining pure breeding colonies. Feeding on small live and frozen invertebrates is straightforward for an established, healthy individual.
The species is rarely available in the commercial trade and is most likely to be encountered through specialist killifish societies and responsible breeders committed to maintaining captive assurance populations. Given the severity of threats to wild populations, any captive-bred stock of this species carries genuine conservation value, and keepers are encouraged to connect with other hobbyists and conservation breeding programmes to sustain a genetically diverse captive population.
Conservation
Profundulus hildebrandi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii), based on a 2018 assessment published in 2019. With an extent of occurrence of only 1,556 mi² and an area of occupancy of 72 mi² across three locations, the species meets the threshold for endangered status by virtue of its tiny, declining, and severely fragmented range.
The IUCN assessment documents a roughly 70 per cent decline in habitat quality within the San Cristóbal de las Casas valley over the past fifty years, driven by the rapid urbanisation of one of Chiapas's largest cities across the Jovel sub-basin. Approximately 60 per cent of that hydrological unit now carries sewage pollution. Additional threats include the introduction of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), a highly effective piscivore that has colonised the lake system; chlorination of spring water for municipal supply, which alters the chemistry of the fish's core habitat; dam construction and hydrological fragmentation; and the physical removal of sediment and aquatic macrophytes — the spawning substrate — during waterway management works. The population at San Cristóbal is estimated at roughly 40,000 individuals (lower 95% confidence interval 8,000), a figure whose trend is unknown but which is presumed to be declining given ongoing habitat deterioration.
The Los Humedales municipal wetland park, established in 2008, protects part of the core habitat and represents the main in-situ conservation measure. The species is listed as endangered under Mexican federal law as well as the IUCN Red List. Given the scale of urban encroachment and the severity of the combined threats, ex-situ breeding in captivity represents an important complement to habitat protection, and this species is a priority for conservation breeding programmes.
