Profundulus oaxacae is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to Oaxaca state in southern Mexico, where it inhabits creeks and the tributaries of the Atoyac river system. Described by Seth Eugene Meek in 1902 from material collected at the Río Verde, it belongs to the genus Profundulus — the most basal lineage of the Middle American killifishes — which was erected by Hubbs in 1924 to separate these Mesoamerican fish from the North American Fundulus. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN (2018), a status that reflects a genuine lack of population surveys rather than confirmed security: the Atoyac drainage has deteriorated sharply since 1995 under heavy urban, industrial, and agricultural pressure.

Taxonomy & naming

Profundulus oaxacae was described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1902, with a type locality of the Río Verde, Oaxaca, Mexico — material Meek collected himself during a survey expedition to the region. The authority is rendered in parentheses because the species was subsequently moved from its original generic placement. The valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Profundulus oaxacae (Meek, 1902).

The genus Profundulus was erected by Carl Leavitt Hubbs in 1924 to accommodate the Middle American killifishes, which Hubbs recognised as more basal relatives of the North American Fundulus rather than true members of that genus. The genus name combines the Latin pro (before, earlier) with fundulus (a diminutive of fundus, meaning bottom), conveying the sense of a fish that preceded Fundulus in an evolutionary sense — a basal form on the killifish tree.

The specific epithet oaxacae is a toponym, the Latinised genitive of Oaxaca, the Mexican state in which the species is endemic. The state name itself derives from the Nahuatl Huaxyacac, meaning 'at the nose of the white leadtree' (Leucaena leucocephala, formerly Huaxin in Nahuatl). Profundulus belongs to the family Profundulidae — a small family of Mesoamerican killifishes distinct from the large North American family Fundulidae — and sits among the most basal killifish lineages in molecular phylogenies.

Morphology

Profundulus oaxacae is a moderately slender killifish of modest size, typical of the genus in its fusiform, laterally compressed body and upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The genus is characterised by relatively large scales, a single dorsal fin positioned well back over the anal fin, and a rounded caudal fin — all traits shared with Fundulus and broadly representative of non-annual killifishes that inhabit permanent or semi-permanent waters rather than ephemeral pools.

Detailed morphometric data for this species are sparse in accessible literature. Members of Profundulus typically reach 1.5–3 in standard length, and P. oaxacae falls within that range. Colouration in life has not been thoroughly documented in the available sources; the genus tends toward an olive-brown or greenish lateral ground colour with variable flank markings, and males of various Profundulus species display brighter colouration and more prominent fin patterning than females, which are generally plainer and deeper-bodied when gravid.

As a non-annual killifish, P. oaxacae lacks the suite of physiological adaptations — rapid growth, early sexual maturity, desiccation-resistant diapausing eggs — found in annual species. Its life history is comparatively slow-paced, consistent with residence in permanent or near-permanent creek and river habitats.

Habitat

The Oaxacan killifish is endemic to Oaxaca state in southern Mexico and is known from the Atoyac river drainage, with the type locality at the Río Verde and subsequent records from creeks near Jalapa del Valle. It inhabits the freshwater streams, creeks, and smaller tributaries of the Atoyac system — inland wetland habitats in the highlands and foothills of Oaxaca.

The IUCN assessment (2018) records the habitat as inland wetlands, encompassing the permanent and semi-permanent freshwater streams typical of the region. Specific water chemistry data for the species' natural habitat are not detailed in available sources, but streams in the Oaxacan highlands are generally moderately hard and close to neutral in pH, fed by calcareous geological substrates that characterise much of this part of Mexico. Temperatures in upland Oaxacan streams vary seasonally but remain within the temperate-to-warm range suitable for a non-annual killifish year-round.

The Atoyac river system, which forms the core of this species' range, has been under increasing anthropogenic pressure since at least the mid-1990s. The IUCN assessors noted documented deterioration of water quality in the drainage resulting from urban and industrial development, making the current occupancy of suitable habitat uncertain.

Feeding

Profundulus oaxacae is a generalist predator and insectivore in the manner typical of non-annual killifishes inhabiting permanent stream habitats. The upturned mouth is well-adapted to taking prey at or near the water surface — aquatic and terrestrial insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton are the expected dietary staples in the wild, supplemented opportunistically by whatever small organisms are abundant in the stream environment.

In the aquarium, Profundulus species accept a wide range of live and frozen foods — Daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small insect larvae are all readily taken. Dried and prepared foods are accepted by most individuals once acclimated, though the species shows the strongest interest in moving prey. Feeding at or near the surface is most natural given the mouth orientation.

Mating

As a non-annual killifish, Profundulus oaxacae reproduces by the plant-spawning mode characteristic of permanent-water killifishes: pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, or spawning mops over an extended period of days to weeks, rather than burying eggs in substrate to diapause through a dry season. This is the reproductive strategy shared by the Fundulus relatives and most Middle American killifishes, reflecting their evolutionary context of stable, permanent or near-permanent stream habitats.

Males in breeding condition are more vibrantly coloured than females and actively court females in the water column. The pair come alongside each other and eggs are deposited singly or in small batches on plant matter, where they adhere and are left unguarded. There is no bubble-nesting, mouthbrooding, or substrate-digging behaviour. Spawning can be sustained over a prolonged period under favourable conditions, with a female producing a steady trickle of eggs rather than a single large clutch.

Breeding

The eggs of Profundulus oaxacae incubate in water attached to plant material — there is no diapause phase and no requirement for a dry-season dormancy period, which distinguishes this and all Profundulus species from the annual killifishes. Incubation duration depends on temperature but is typically measured in days to a couple of weeks at warm water temperatures, after which fully formed fry emerge that are capable of feeding almost immediately on suitably small live foods.

In the aquarium, breeding is encouraged by maintaining clean, well-oxygenated water, providing fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and offering a varied diet of live or frozen invertebrate foods. Eggs can be collected from the mop and incubated separately to protect them from being eaten by the parents or other tank inhabitants. Fry are raised on infusoria and micro-worms before graduating to nauplii and finely chopped invertebrate foods. The species is comparatively long-lived relative to annual killifishes, consistent with its non-annual life history.

In the aquarium

Profundulus oaxacae is an uncommon species in the hobby, encountered mainly through specialist killifish societies and breeders rather than the general trade. Like most Profundulus, it does best in a species or near-species aquarium rather than a crowded community tank. A modest-sized, well-planted tank with a secure lid — killifishes are accomplished jumpers — and subdued lighting is appropriate. The addition of surface cover in the form of floating plants or overhanging vegetation is appreciated.

Water chemistry should reflect the moderately hard, near-neutral conditions of Oaxacan highland streams: a pH in the range of 7.0–7.8 and moderate hardness are appropriate starting points. Temperature can be maintained in the 64–75 °F range; slightly cooler than tropical community tanks, consistent with the upland stream origins of the species. The American Killifish Association is the primary hobbyist resource for locating captive-bred stock and husbandry advice for this and related Profundulus species.

Given its conservation status — Data Deficient, but from a drainage known to be deteriorating — captive populations maintained by specialist keepers represent a potentially valuable reserve. Hobbyists who keep this species are encouraged to maintain careful records of origin and to share surplus fish within the killifish community.

Conservation

Profundulus oaxacae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 7 June 2018 by Laura Maiz-Tome. The Data Deficient status does not indicate that the species is secure; it reflects insufficient survey data to make a reliable population estimate or trend assessment. Notably, the assessor documented real and ongoing threats to the species' Atoyac river drainage: deterioration of water quality since 1995 linked to urban and industrial development, heavy metal pollution, fecal bacteria contamination, and agricultural and industrial runoff.

As an Oaxacan endemic confined to a single river drainage, the species is inherently vulnerable to any degradation of that system. The combination of a restricted native range and a polluted, deteriorating watershed is a conservation concern that the Data Deficient listing does not adequately convey. Other Profundulus species are threatened or endangered where assessed, and P. oaxacae's situation may well be similar once adequate surveys are conducted.

Protection of water quality in the Atoyac drainage — through enforcement of pollution controls on industrial and agricultural discharges and investment in wastewater treatment for the growing urban centres of Oaxaca — is the most direct conservation measure available. Targeted surveys to establish current population extent and abundance would support a more meaningful IUCN reassessment. Captive assurance colonies maintained by the killifish hobby community offer a supplementary safeguard while in-situ threats persist.
