Clarias albopunctatus is a small-to-modest African walking catfish of the Chad basin and adjacent river systems, reaching a real adult length of about 7.5 in — no giant by Clarias standards, but still a fish that most home aquaria are not set up to host on the long term. Like every member of the genus it is an obligate air-breather, gulping surface air through a paired accessory breathing organ, and it carries the family's naked, scaleless skin and stiff, locking pectoral spines. It is a nocturnal insectivore of floodplain rivers and ponds that breeds seasonally in the wild but is farmed and hormone-induced at commercial scale in West African aquaculture — it is essentially not a home-bred fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Clarias albopunctatus was described by John Treadwell Nichols and Francesca La Monte in 1953. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or "walking" catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large African and Asian genus of more than 60 species united by an accessory air-breathing organ built from modified gill arches. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias albopunctatus as the currently valid combination, and it has always stood in Clarias rather than any of the older catfish genera occasionally applied to African species in the nineteenth century.

The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, referring to the liveliness or vigour of these fish out of water — a nod to their ability to survive and even move overland between pools. The epithet albopunctatus is Latin, from albus ("white") and punctatus ("spotted, dotted"), describing pale spotting on the body noted by the describers. Within the Chad basin and Congo drainage, Clarias albopunctatus is one of a cluster of small to medium walking catfish species that are frequently confused with one another in older fisheries literature; identification rests on fin-ray counts and head morphology rather than colour alone.

Morphology

Like all Clarias, this species has the unmistakable walking-catfish shape: an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin that runs nearly the length of the back, mirrored by a similarly long anal fin, with a rounded caudal fin. Four pairs of barbels around the mouth (nasal, maxillary and two mandibular pairs) give it a whiskered, sensory-rich face suited to feeling its way through murky floodplain water and leaf litter at night.

Maximum recorded length is 7.5 in total length (FishBase), making Clarias albopunctatus one of the smaller members of its genus rather than a giant, but still a fish that needs real swimming room as an adult. The skin is completely scaleless and covered in a protective mucus layer, which is characteristic of the family and has direct consequences for medicating the fish (see "In the aquarium"). The pectoral fins each carry a stiff, bony, serrated spine that can be locked erect — a defensive weapon that readily snags a net and can jab an unwary keeper's hand.

Habitat

Clarias albopunctatus is native to the Lake Chad basin, the upper Benue River system, and the Ubangi River drainage of the middle Congo basin — a broad swath of Central and West African floodplain country spanning parts of Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It inhabits floodplain rivers, seasonally flooded ponds, and the associated wetlands that expand and contract with the region's wet and dry seasons.

As an obligate air-breather it is well adapted to the oxygen-poor, sometimes stagnant floodplain waters typical of this habitat, where dissolved oxygen can crash during the dry season as pools shrink and warm. Juveniles undertake nocturnal group migrations from floodponds toward the main river channel, a movement documented to be triggered by current speed — behaviour tied directly to the boom-and-bust hydrology of Sahelian and sub-Sahelian floodplains.

Feeding

Field studies of the species' diet identify it primarily as an insectivore: aquatic and terrestrial insects make up the bulk of stomach contents, followed by crustaceans, with feeding activity concentrated at night, peaking between roughly 20:00 and 05:00. This nocturnal foraging pattern fits its barbel-rich, low-light-adapted anatomy.

In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and prawn, and other meaty prepared foods, and like other Clarias it is an opportunistic feeder that will also take smaller fish and invertebrates it can overpower — tankmates need to be too large to be swallowed. Feeding is best offered after lights-out or at dusk to match its natural rhythm.

Mating

Clarias albopunctatus breeds seasonally in the wild, with a documented breeding season running from March to September in West African floodplain populations, timed to the rains and the resulting flood pulse that opens up spawning and nursery habitat. Sexual maturity is reached at roughly 4–6 in total length after the first year of life, and fecundity is substantial for a fish this size, with reported oocyte counts ranging from about 1,974 to 9,310 eggs per female.

This is not a species with an accessible home-aquarium courtship to describe: like other commercially important Clarias, spawning in captivity is achieved through hormone-induced breeding on fish farms rather than natural pairing behaviour observed by hobbyists. Semi-intensive floodplain pond aquaculture in the Anambra River system of Nigeria has been studied specifically for this species, underscoring that its reproductive biology is documented primarily through a fisheries and aquaculture lens, not an aquarium one.

Breeding

This is a farm- and hormone-bred species at commercial scale, not a fish that is bred in home aquaria. West African aquaculture operations propagate Clarias albopunctatus in semi-intensively managed floodplain ponds, typically using induced (hormone-triggered) spawning to synchronise egg release, following the same broad approach used for its much larger and more famous relative, the African sharptooth catfish. There is no meaningful record of hobbyist breeding.

There is no parental care to speak of once eggs are released and fertilised under pond or hatchery conditions — this is a scatter-and-abandon strategy typical of commercially propagated Clarias, with survival managed through pond stocking density and management rather than guarding behaviour. Aquarists should not expect, or attempt to engineer, a home spawning; the species' reproductive biology has been studied for aquaculture productivity, not for the hobby.

In the aquarium

At a real adult size of about 7.5 in total length, Clarias albopunctatus is far more modest than giant walking catfish species, but it still needs a properly sized, securely covered tank — a rectangular footprint well over a metre is sensible for an adult, not a small community tank, and lids must be secure and gap-free because Clarias are proficient escape artists that use their pectoral spines to grip and travel overland. As an obligate air-breather it needs regular access to the surface and should never be kept in a fully sealed, airless setup.

Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, its skin is completely scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned catfish. Second, its locking, serrated pectoral spines can snag a net and jab the keeper, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. It is nocturnal and predatory, so tankmates must be robust and, critically, too large to be eaten — this species will consume any fish or invertebrate it can fit in its mouth. As with other Clarias, it should never be released into the wild outside its native range; several congeners are notorious invasive species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias albopunctatus as Least Concern, based on an assessment from August 2019. It has a relatively wide distribution across the Chad basin, upper Benue system and Ubangi (middle Congo) drainage, and it is not currently considered at risk at the species level.

As a floodplain species tied to the seasonal flood pulse of these river systems, its longer-term outlook is linked to the health of Sahelian and sub-Sahelian wetlands, which face pressure from damming, irrigation offtake, and the well-documented long-term shrinkage of Lake Chad itself. It is also a species of local fisheries and aquaculture importance in parts of its range, which supports continued monitoring even at a Least Concern status.
