Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion bualanum was originally described by Ernst Ahl in 1924 as Panchax bualanus, with a type locality recorded as Buala, Cameroon — the modern village of Bouala, situated in what is now the western Central African Republic near the Cameroon border. The authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been transferred to the genus Aphyosemion, which acts as the principal receptacle for much of the West and Central African non-annual killifish radiation. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphyosemion bualanum (Ahl, 1924).
The taxonomy has a convoluted history. The specific name bualanum was incorrectly applied to populations of the closely related Aphyosemion elberti for several decades before the error was recognised and corrected in the killifish literature around 1990. A synonym listed by the British Killifish Association is Aphyosemion rubrifascium, reflecting the earlier misapplication and the species' striped colouration. The specific epithet is formed from the Latinised toponym bualanum, meaning 'from Buala' — a straightforward commemorative reference to the type locality.
Multiple geographically distinct collection-point strains are maintained in the hobby, including fish from Ndop, Ndikinimeki, Ndouzem, Ndokayo (catalogued under collection code JVC08), Bafoussam, Ngong (ADK 10/313), Ntui, the Mbam River, Koupa Matapit, Bamessi, and Diang. These strains show colour and pattern variation and are catalogued separately by killifish societies, though all remain under the single species concept as currently understood by Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Aphyosemion bualanum reaches approximately 2 in total length (FishBase), with males attaining roughly 2.5 in and females remaining somewhat smaller at around 2 in; slow growth is characteristic of the species and spawning females are typically seen at 1.5 in or above. The body is elongate, moderately compressed, and of the typical Aphyosemion build — slender through the mid-body, with the dorsal fin positioned posteriorly opposite the anal fin, and an expanded, fan-shaped caudal fin in fully developed males.
Male colouration is striking despite the species' savanna origin. The flanks are metallic blue-green with a pinkish lustre, crossed by twelve to fourteen dark tan-to-red vertical bars that give the fish its synonym rubrifascium (Latin for 'red-banded'). The dorsal and anal fins are long and pointed in adult males, green in ground colour with red spots and markings; the caudal fin is fan-shaped, bearing red-spotted vertical bars, distinctive blue outer-edge markings, and red borders. The pectoral fins are orange. Females are considerably plainer: pale pinkish brown with rows of brown vertical spots in place of the bars, and rounded, pale grey fins. The sexual dimorphism is therefore marked and makes in-tank sexing straightforward.
Habitat
Aphyosemion bualanum occupies highland savanna marshes, slow brooks, and seasonally flooded grassland pools at relatively high elevation for a West African killifish. Its core range centres on northern Cameroon — including the marshes around Ndop and Bamunko in the highland plains between the Vuri and Sanaga river systems — with the range extending into western Central African Republic and southeastern Chad, and possibly into eastern Nigeria in upper Benue tributaries and Mayo Kébbi headwaters. The Logone and Chari drainages feeding Lake Chad form the principal hydrological context.
The habitat is described as brooks and swamps in open and humid grassland savanna on highlands. This is a meaningfully different environment from the dense rainforest blackwater streams associated with many Aphyosemion species further west: the water here is exposed to more light and is influenced by high rainfall feeding highland catchments, producing relatively cool temperatures — the British Killifish Association notes high rainfall and low temperature as defining characteristics of the Ndop–Bamunko populations. FishBase records a temperature range of 70–77 °F and a pH around 6.0 with soft water (dH 5–8). The BKA records water softness at 50–80 ppm total dissolved solids and pH 6.8–7.0 for aquarium maintenance, indicating the species tolerates a mild range on either side of slightly acid.
Because the species is benthopelagic in habit — occupying the lower-to-mid water column near vegetation and the substrate — fine-leaved aquatic vegetation and root masses are likely important structural features of its natural microhabitat, as is typical for plant-spawning Aphyosemion.
Feeding
In the wild, Aphyosemion bualanum feeds on small invertebrates accessible at the surface and mid-water of savanna brooks and marshes: the BKA records a preference for live foods including mosquito larvae, small white worm (Enchytraeidae), Tubifex, and Daphnia. This invertivore diet is standard across the non-annual Aphyosemion and reflects the small gape and quick strike behaviour of these fish relative to the larger annual killies.
In captivity the species requires live or frozen invertebrate foods for best condition and colour, though dried foods are accepted occasionally. The BKA notes the species must be fed little but often — it is not a species that thrives on once-daily bulk feeding. Variety is important for maintaining the vibrancy of male colouration; a staple of frozen bloodworm supplemented with Daphnia, baby brine shrimp nauplii, or white mosquito larvae produces good results. Overfeeding should be avoided in the small, shallow tanks typically used for killifish maintenance as it rapidly degrades water quality.
Mating
Aphyosemion bualanum is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent or near-permanent water and does not bury eggs in substrate to undergo embryonic diapause as the true annual killifishes of seasonally desiccating pools do. Instead, it is a plant spawner (also called a substrate or mop spawner): pairs deposit adhesive eggs singly on fine-leaved vegetation, floating plant roots, or nylon spawning mops near the surface or along the mid-water column, a few eggs at a time, over extended periods rather than in a single clutch event.
The BKA describes the species as a 'switch spawner', meaning it will spawn at multiple depths depending on the substrates available — not restricted to surface mops alone. Males display to females by flaring fins and showing their full lateral colouration; the courtship is relatively low-key compared to the spectacular battles of some Aphyosemion species. The species is documented as not prolific, producing approximately 15–30 eggs per week per pair, making it a slow producer relative to many aquarium killifishes. A tank furnished with nylon spawning mops — both floating and weighted substrate mops — and fine-leaved plants will provide spawning sites. Males are competitive and multiple males together may stress subordinates; pairs or trios (one male, two females) in dedicated species tanks are recommended.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive and are deposited individually on mop fibres or plant leaves over successive days and weeks. Aquarists collect eggs by removing mops and picking eggs by hand or by transferring the whole mop to a hatching container. Incubation in shallow, slightly acidic water at approximately 72–75 °F (around 74 °F as recorded by the BKA) takes 12–16 days before hatching — a relatively short incubation for Aphyosemion, consistent with the non-annual plant-spawning life history in which no diapause phase is required.
Fry are large at hatching relative to egg-burying annual killies and accept baby brine shrimp nauplii and microworms as first foods immediately after becoming free-swimming. Growth is slow compared with annual species, and females are typically not sexually mature until they reach approximately 1.5 in. Dedicated breeding tanks of modest size — the BKA suggests approximately 30 × 20 × 8 in — with very shallow water depth, a spawning mop or two, and gentle circulation from a small sponge filter are standard. Because the eggs are non-diapausing, they should be kept in water throughout incubation and should not be stored in moist peat as one would for annual species. Regular small water changes in the hatching container maintain water quality through the incubation period.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion bualanum is regarded as a shy species requiring a calm, dedicated species setup rather than a community aquarium. Males are competitive with one another, so standard killifish practice applies: single pairs or trios in tanks of modest size (from around 10 US gal) with plenty of visual cover from floating plants, fine-leaved vegetation, and dark substrate to bring out male colouration and reduce inter-male conflict. The BKA rates it as difficult to maintain relative to more robust Aphyosemion, likely reflecting its origin in relatively cool highland water; temperatures above 77 °F are stressful and the species does better in the lower range of 70–75 °F typical of its highland habitat.
Water quality must be pristine and stable: soft to moderately soft water at slightly acid to near-neutral pH (6.8–7.0 is cited by the BKA for maintenance) and negligible nitrate accumulation. Because the fish feeds little and often, small meals of live or frozen invertebrates two to three times daily are more appropriate than large once-daily feedings. The slow growth and modest fecundity (15–30 eggs per week) mean that building up a working colony takes patience, which contributes to the species' status as a specialist's fish rather than a wide-market aquarium species.
Numerous geographic strains circulate among killifish societies — BKA, the American Killifish Association, and European affiliates — and strain identity should be carefully maintained by hobbyists keeping multiple populations, as crossing different collection-point strains is discouraged within the hobby to preserve the documented geographic variation. Acquiring fish through killifish society auctions and exchanges, where strain provenance is labelled, is preferred to the general trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Aphyosemion bualanum as Least Concern (LC) as of its September 2019 assessment, on the basis that the species has a relatively broad distribution across northern Cameroon, western Central African Republic, southeastern Chad, and possibly eastern Nigeria, and no immediately acute population-level threats have been documented. The IUCN taxon ID is T181875 and the assessment ID is 134751665.
Nonetheless, several contextual factors warrant attention. The species' savanna highland habitat in the Lake Chad basin is subject to broader pressures: the Lake Chad catchment has contracted dramatically since the 1960s due to a combination of reduced rainfall associated with Sahelian climate change and increased irrigation withdrawals, and the highland tributary systems of the Logone and Chari drainages — the heartland of A. bualanum — are not immune to this trajectory. Wetland drainage for agriculture, deforestation of highland catchments reducing the buffering capacity of seasonal brooks, and the diffuse introduction of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia) and other exotic species in some parts of Cameroon represent ongoing background pressures on small-stream killifish communities.
Because A. bualanum is documented from multiple discrete collection points across a moderately wide geographic area, the species is less immediately vulnerable than single-locality endemics within the genus, and its maintenance in killifish hobby collections provides an ex situ reserve. The numerous named collection-point strains maintained by killifish societies represent documented localities whose geographic provenance could in principle support future reintroduction or supplementation efforts should populations decline.
