Schmitt's killifish is a small, non-annual jewel from the rainforest streams of eastern Liberia, living in clear, soft, acidic water draining the Cavally–Cess river catchments. Males carry the intricate iridescent patterning typical of West African forest killies — blue, red, and orange markings on a dark ground — while females are a cryptic pale brown. The species is assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, its already narrow range lying within one of the most heavily deforested stretches of Upper Guinean forest. In the hobby it is known almost exclusively from the Juarzon strain, kept by specialist killifish societies in Europe and North America who recognise it as both a conservation priority and one of the more subtly demanding Scriptaphyosemion to maintain.

Taxonomy & naming

Scriptaphyosemion schmitti was first described by R. Romand in 1979 under the name Roloffia schmitti, a genus that was subsequently absorbed into the broader rearrangement of West African lyretail killifishes. The species now sits in Scriptaphyosemion, a genus erected to hold the small non-annual forest killies of Upper Guinea that are distinguished from their Fundulopanchax relatives by morphological and molecular characters. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Scriptaphyosemion schmitti (Romand, 1979), with the authority in parentheses reflecting the move from Roloffia.

The species epithet honours Gérard Schmitt, a French killifish enthusiast and collector who assisted with obtaining material that formed the basis of Romand's description. The naming convention of honouring field collectors and hobbyist contributors is long-standing in killi taxonomy, where the practical network of specialist keepers has historically been indispensable for gathering specimens from remote localities. The AKA Reference Library preserves Romand's original German-language preliminary description, the full title of which is 'Vorlaufige Beschreibung von Roloffia schmitti'.

Morphology

Males reach approximately 2 in total length; females are slightly smaller, typically around 1.5 in TL. Like other Scriptaphyosemion, the body is slender and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and a subterminal mouth angled upward — adaptations for surface and mid-water feeding in still or slow-moving forest water. The dorsal and anal fins are set well back toward the caudal peduncle, a placement characteristic of the group.

Male colouration follows the Scriptaphyosemion pattern of rich iridescent markings on a darker base: the flanks carry rows of red-to-orange spots or streaks over blue-green iridescence, and the fins show red patterning with pale blue or turquoise borders. Females are considerably plainer — pale brownish with little marking — which is typical sexual dichromatism for the genus. Colour intensity in males is strongly influenced by water quality, temperature, and social context; fish in suboptimal conditions fade noticeably.

Habitat

In the wild, Scriptaphyosemion schmitti inhabits small rainforest brooks and streams in eastern Liberia, in the Cavally–Cess river drainage system. This is the Upper Guinean forest zone, characterised by dense closed-canopy tropical forest that shades the streams completely, keeping water temperatures low and stable and allowing leaf litter to accumulate on the substrate. The water is very soft and acidic — FishBase records pH 6.0–6.5 and general hardness of 1–2 dH, with temperatures in the 72–75 °F range — and is typically stained amber-brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids leaching from decaying leaf matter.

These streams are not seasonal in the sense of drying up annually. They flow year-round, though discharge fluctuates with Liberia's two wet seasons. The fish's non-annual breeding strategy is directly linked to this permanence: unlike savanna-dwelling annual killies that have evolved diapausing eggs to survive dry-season pool desiccation, Scriptaphyosemion schmitti breeds continuously when conditions are suitable, and its eggs incubate directly in water without entering dormancy.

Feeding

Like most small forest killies, Scriptaphyosemion schmitti is an opportunistic micro-predator in the wild, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface. The upturned mouth and mid-water station are consistent with a reliance on surface-associated prey as well as pelagic invertebrates.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — artemia (brine shrimp), daphnia, mosquito larvae, and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae are all suitable and preferred over dry foods. Small-granule or micro-pellet prepared foods can be taken but should be supplemented regularly with live or frozen items to maintain condition and colour in males. Overfeeding is a greater risk than underfeeding in the small tanks typically used for Scriptaphyosemion; keeping the diet varied and the portions modest helps avoid water quality problems.

Mating

Scriptaphyosemion schmitti is a non-annual plant spawner. Pairs and small groups engage in repeated brief spawning acts over days and weeks rather than producing a single mass of eggs buried in substrate for later hatching. Males display vigorously to females, fanning their coloured fins and circling; receptive females are driven to fine-leaved plants, moss clumps, or spawning mops near the surface, where one or a few adhesive eggs are deposited per act.

The adhesive eggs attach firmly to the spawning medium and incubate directly in water at ambient temperature without any diapause period. Males are active and may harass females persistently; in the small aquaria used for killies this can cause stress-related injury or death to females, and most experienced keepers recommend providing adequate cover for females or running a rotation system — a single male with two females, or periodic rest periods for females separated from the male.

Breeding

In practice, hobbyists breed Scriptaphyosemion schmitti by one of two methods documented for the species: the mop method, in which fine synthetic or natural fibre spawning mops are provided and checked every few days for eggs that are removed and incubated separately in small containers; and the long-term or colony method, in which fry are left with adults in a well-planted tank and allowed to appear on their own. Killi.co.uk notes that fry are tolerant of adults in the colony method, suggesting that predation pressure from parents is not severe, though fine-leaved surface cover provides essential refugia for newly hatched fry.

Eggs are relatively small and sensitive to fungus; incubation water should be soft and acidic, ideally matching the breeding tank, with a small amount of methylene blue or alder cones to reduce fungal infection. Incubation takes approximately two to three weeks at 72–73 °F. Spawning ceases when water temperature rises above 75 °F, making temperature control important — this is a cool-water forest species, not a warm-water killi. The species is not highly prolific, producing modest numbers of eggs per week compared with more fecund Fundulopanchax relatives, but steady production over an extended period is possible in stable, well-managed conditions.

In the aquarium

Killi.co.uk rates Scriptaphyosemion schmitti as average difficulty, a fair assessment for an experienced killifish keeper but a significant challenge for someone new to the group. FishBase describes it as 'difficult to maintain', and the two ratings together suggest a species that rewards careful husbandry but punishes neglect or unsuitable water conditions.

A small species-only or Scriptaphyosemion-only aquarium is the appropriate setup — a 10 US gal tank is sufficient for a pair or trio. Water must be very soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.5, dH 1–2, or as close as local supply allows), clean, and cool: the upper temperature limit of around 73–75 °F means the species cannot be kept alongside fish that require warmer conditions, and in warm climates an aquarium chiller may be necessary. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort, or equivalent) and a cover of floating vegetation replicates the shaded forest stream environment, reduces male aggression toward females, and provides egg-laying sites.

The species is not aggressive toward fish its own size but should not be kept with boisterous tankmates. Water changes with properly conditioned soft, acidic water are essential; the fish is sensitive to dissolved waste accumulation and to the shock of a large water change with markedly different chemistry. Given its Critically Endangered status in the wild, every successful captive breeding effort represents genuine conservation value.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment, completed in 2020 by P. Laleye, lists Scriptaphyosemion schmitti as Critically Endangered (CR). The species is a single-locality endemic of eastern Liberia's rainforest stream network, and that forest has been subjected to decades of intensive logging, agricultural conversion, and civil-conflict-driven disruption. Liberia lost a major proportion of its Upper Guinean forest cover in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; the small, shaded forest brooks that Scriptaphyosemion schmitti requires are directly dependent on intact canopy — deforestation raises water temperatures, increases siltation, and destroys the leaf-litter microhabitat that underpins the species' prey base.

The Cavally–Cess drainage system where the species occurs sits in one of the remaining significant forest blocks of western Liberia, but this area continues to face pressure from logging concessions, small-scale mining, and agricultural encroachment. There is no known captive-conservation programme under institutional management; the species survives in the hands of specialist killifish societies, principally through the Juarzon strain maintained by hobbyists affiliated with organisations such as the American Killifish Association and European killi clubs. Given the narrow wild range and the severity of habitat degradation, the maintenance of genetically sound captive populations by specialist keepers is not merely an aquarium hobby activity but a practical buffer against extinction.
