Described in 1982 by Lévêque and Paugy under the name Barbus lauzannei and later reclassified into Enteromius, this diminutive cyprinid barely reaches 3 in and is confined to highland headwater streams of the Fouta Djallon massif — a region known for its exceptional diversity of endemic small barbs. Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, its restricted range and dependence on clear, clean highland water make it one of the more conservation-sensitive West African barbs.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius lauzannei was described by Christian Lévêque and Didier Paugy in 1982, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus lauzannei. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Lévêque & Paugy, 1982) — reflects the subsequent transfer of the species into Enteromius, a large genus now used for most African small barbs that were formerly lumped into the sprawling old Barbus. FishBase records this species under the entry ID 11477.

The genus Enteromius encompasses a diverse assemblage of small to medium-sized African barbs spanning sub-Saharan and parts of North Africa. Molecular and morphological revisions in recent decades have moved many species out of Barbus and into Enteromius, though the taxonomy of this group remains an active area of research. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the accepted authority for the valid combination Enteromius lauzannei.

The species epithet lauzannei honours an individual; the Fouta Djallon highlands of Guinea, where the Lofa River rises, have been identified as a centre of endemism for small barbs, and E. lauzannei is among the species restricted to this upland region.

Morphology

Enteromius lauzannei is a small barb reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 3 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has the typical small-barb body plan: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a rounded snout and relatively small mouth.

Detailed morphological descriptions of this species are sparse in the available literature. As an endemic of the upper Lofa River system, it has not been the subject of extensive morphological study in the aquarium literature. Coloration and scale counts from the original description (Lévêque & Paugy, 1982) constitute the primary diagnostic record, and comparative material is limited.

Habitat

Enteromius lauzannei is endemic to the upper Lofa River (also spelled Loffa River) in Guinea, West Africa. The Lofa rises in the Fouta Djallon highlands, and the species is known from headwater streams and riverine reaches within this system. The Fouta Djallon massif supports cool, clear, fast-flowing streams over rock and gravel substrates — habitats characteristic of West African highland barbs.

No detailed water-chemistry measurements specific to E. lauzannei localities appear in the accessible literature. Headwater streams of the Fouta Djallon are generally oligotrophic, with moderate to low conductivity and broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH, reflecting the granitic and lateritic geology of the region. Water temperatures in highland Guinea streams are cooler than lowland West African rivers, with seasonal fluctuation tied to rainfall patterns.

The Fouta Djallon highlands are recognised as a centre of endemism for freshwater fish, and the restricted distribution of E. lauzannei within the upper Lofa catchment makes it highly sensitive to any alteration of that specific watercourse.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary studies on Enteromius lauzannei appear in the accessible literature. Enteromius barbs are generally opportunistic omnivores that forage along the substrate and water column for small invertebrates, algae, fine organic matter and detritus. Highland stream species like E. lauzannei likely subsist primarily on aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — supplemented by algae and particulate organic material.

In the aquarium, members of this genus typically accept a wide range of small prepared foods, live and frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter. Given the scarcity of husbandry records for this species, extrapolation from related West African Enteromius is the most reliable guide.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius lauzannei is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and no parental care. Males in breeding condition pursue gravid females through available vegetation or over the substrate in the typical barb courtship drive, and eggs and milt are released together in brief lateral presses.

Courtship behaviour in the wild has not been documented for this species specifically. Seasonal spawning is probable, likely timed to the onset of rains and elevated water levels in the Lofa catchment — a pattern common among small West African barbs that spawn into flooded marginal vegetation and gravel beds.

Breeding

There are no published husbandry or captive breeding records for Enteromius lauzannei in the available literature; the species is not established in the aquarium trade. Breeding biology is inferred from the genus. Like other Enteromius, it is almost certainly a broadcast egg-scatterer that deposits small, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, root masses or gravel, with no parental investment beyond spawning.

Adults of barbs in this group typically consume their own eggs, so any captive breeding attempt would require separation of adults from eggs immediately after spawning. Given the conservation status of the species and its restricted wild range, aquarium husbandry records would be of scientific value if the species were ever successfully maintained.

In the aquarium

Enteromius lauzannei is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No husbandry guidelines specific to this species exist in the accessible literature. It has not been reliably exported from Guinea, and any specimens encountered would be of exceptional rarity.

If it were to become available, general principles for small highland West African barbs would apply: a well-oxygenated tank with moderate to good flow, clean water, and a temperature range consistent with Fouta Djallon highland streams. A group of six or more individuals is standard practice for small barbs, which are social schooling fish. The conservation status of E. lauzannei — Vulnerable, with a very restricted range — argues for extreme caution regarding any collection from the wild.

Conservation

Enteromius lauzannei is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment, taxon ID 182252). The species was previously assessed as Endangered in 2019 before being downlisted to Vulnerable in 2020 following a reassessment. Its restricted range — confined to the upper Lofa River system in Guinea — is the primary driver of its conservation concern; any significant deterioration of that single river system could threaten the entire species.

The Lofa River basin and the Fouta Djallon highlands face mounting pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation of catchment headwaters, artisanal gold mining (which causes heavy sedimentation and mercury contamination), and water extraction for irrigation. Guinea's rapid population growth and land-use change in the western highlands compound these pressures. The species is not in the ornamental trade, so collection is not a known threat.

Conservation of E. lauzannei depends on maintaining habitat quality in the upper Lofa catchment. The Fouta Djallon region's broader importance as a freshwater biodiversity hotspot — sometimes called the 'water tower of West Africa' — offers some hope that watershed protection efforts at a regional scale may indirectly benefit this species.
