Simpsonichthys suzarti is a small annual killifish endemic to the seasonal floodplain pools of the Rio Pardo drainage in northeastern Brazil, a tributary system of the upper São Francisco basin. Like all members of its genus, it is an obligate annual: its entire life cycle is shaped by seasonal drying, with adults spawning in soft substrate before the pools evaporate, their drought-resistant eggs persisting buried in mud and peat through the dry season in arrested development, and hatching when rains return. Described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2004 from Zootaxa 468, the species honours both a friend of the author and an aquarist who provided the type material — a fitting tribute for a fish that straddles the worlds of field ichthyology and the specialist killifish hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Simpsonichthys suzarti was described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 2004 in Zootaxa 468:1–7, with the type locality given as the Rio Pardo floodplains of northeastern Brazil. The original 1990 authority credit — Costa & Brasil, 1990 — reflects foundational work on Brazilian annual Cynolebias species, and the parenthetical presentation of the authority in the current name indicates that the taxon was subsequently transferred to the genus Simpsonichthys. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) governs the valid combination Simpsonichthys suzarti (Costa & Brasil, 1990), placed within the family Rivulidae — the South American killifishes — in the order Cyprinodontiformes.

Simpsonichthys is a strictly Neotropical genus confined to the seasonal drainage basins of eastern and central Brazil. It belongs to the annual killifish radiation characteristic of the São Francisco River system and neighbouring drainages, a group that has undergone extensive species proliferation in the patchy mosaic of temporary floodplain pools that form during the wet season and vanish during the dry. The genus has been revised repeatedly, with many species formerly assigned to Cynolebias now redistributed among Simpsonichthys, Hypsolebias, Xenurolebias, and allied genera on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence.

Morphology

Simpsonichthys suzarti is a compact, deep-bodied annual killifish in the mould typical of the genus: males are considerably more colourful than females, with vivid iridescent flanks and extended, ornate finnage, while females are cryptically patterned in olive-brown with darker spotting or banding — a dimorphism common to virtually all annual rivulids and functionally tied to the male's need to attract mates during the brief spawning window before the pool dries.

The species is small even by killifish standards. FishBase records a maximum length of approximately 1–1.5 in total length for males; females are typically shorter. The body form is laterally compressed and relatively deep, the dorsal and anal fins set far back on the body and drawn to soft-rayed points in mature males — an arrangement that facilitates the spawning dive into substrate. The mouth is small and upturned, adapted to surface and mid-water feeding in shallow seasonal pools.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Pardo drainage system of northeastern Brazil, a region of the São Francisco basin characterised by strongly seasonal rainfall and extensive floodplain areas that become inundated during the wet season and contract or disappear entirely during the dry months. These temporary pools and floodplain swales — shallow, warm, often densely vegetated, and underlain by soft, organic-rich mud — are the sole habitat of Simpsonichthys suzarti. The fish is found in no other water type.

Water conditions in this habitat are soft and mildly acidic, reflecting the organic load of leaf litter, peat, and decomposing vegetation that accumulates in slow-moving or still floodplain pools on a predominantly sandy-substrate lowland. Temperatures can rise steeply in the late dry season as pools shrink, but the fish is not present as a free-swimming adult at that stage; the population over-winters as buried eggs. The accessible habitat window for adult fish is a matter of weeks to a few months.

The Rio Pardo drainage lies in the Caatinga biome — one of the world's most distinctive and threatened dry tropical forests — and in the cerrado-caatinga transition zone. This geographical setting gives Simpsonichthys suzarti a very limited native footprint and makes it highly sensitive to any alteration of the floodplain hydrology on which its unique life cycle depends.

Feeding

Annual killifishes of the Simpsonichthys lineage are generalist carnivores in the wild, feeding opportunistically on whatever invertebrate prey is available in the shallow, temporary pools they inhabit. Small aquatic and semi-terrestrial insects (larvae and adults), zooplankton, microcrustaceans, and worms form the principal diet — the same prey base that colonises seasonal floodplain pools during the wet season and provides the energy budget that annual fish must convert into reproductive output within a compressed timeframe.

In aquarium care, Simpsonichthys suzarti and its close relatives accept live and frozen foods readily. Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and tubifex are all taken. The species is small enough that food particle size matters; micro-worm and vinegar eels are suitable additions for rearing juveniles. Prepared dried foods are accepted by most individuals given time to acclimatise, though live foods elicit the strongest feeding response and support the best condition in breeding adults.

Mating

Simpsonichthys suzarti follows the annual killifish mating system characteristic of the Rivulidae: brief, intense spawning activity during the wet season, driven by the biological imperative to deposit eggs into substrate before the pool dries. Males are strikingly more colourful than females and actively court through lateral displays, fin-spreading, and colour intensification — behaviour that can be observed in the aquarium whenever a male is placed within sight of a female.

Spawning is initiated by the male herding the female toward the substrate. The pair execute a spawning dive together, pressing into soft peat or mud, where a single egg is fertilised and buried with each dive. This spawning act is repeated many times during a session, distributing eggs through the substrate at varying depths. There is no pair bond beyond this cooperative dive, and males will spawn with multiple females. Competition between males is common in natural populations, where the density of breeding adults can be high in the brief period the pool holds water.

Breeding

The defining biological fact of Simpsonichthys suzarti is its annual reproductive strategy with diapausing eggs. After the spawning dives deposit eggs in the substrate, the adults have no further role; in the wild, they typically perish as the pool dries, having completed their entire adult life within a single wet season. The eggs, however, are built to survive: encased in a tough chorion and arrested at an early developmental stage (diapause I, II, or III depending on conditions), they persist through months of dry-season burial in desiccating mud or peat, resistant to desiccation and able to resume development when water returns.

In hobbyist care, this life cycle is reproduced using a peat or coconut coir spawning medium placed on the aquarium floor. After a spawning period of four to six weeks, the medium is removed, gently pressed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature for a diapause period — typically two to four months for Simpsonichthys species, though optimal timing varies and experienced keepers often test hatch a small portion to check embryonic development before committing to a full wetting. Hatching is triggered by flooding the peat with soft, slightly acidic water. Fry are free-swimming almost immediately on hatching; they are relatively large compared to the egg size and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii from the first day.

Growth is rapid — a biological necessity in a species whose lifespan is calibrated to a single rainy season. Juveniles reach sexual maturity in as little as six to eight weeks under warm conditions. Adults typically live six months to a year in the aquarium, and multi-year survival, while possible under very cool conditions, is unusual.

In the aquarium

Simpsonichthys suzarti is a specialist fish suited to killifish enthusiasts familiar with the annual maintenance cycle. A small species aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal is sufficient for a breeding pair or trio; the tank should be kept away from strong light, which bleaches the male's colours and stresses fish adapted to shaded, tannic floodplain pools. Soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0, hardness below 100 ppm, temperature 72–79 °F) most closely matches the native habitat, though the species shows reasonable tolerance for slightly harder water in non-breeding situations.

The substrate should include a layer of soft peat or coconut coir — both as spawning medium and as a water-softening, acidifying buffer. Dark substrate and floating or fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort) reduce skittishness and show off the male's colouration. Tankmates are not recommended: males will harass females relentlessly in confined space, and the species does not coexist easily with fish outside its own genus. A ratio of one male to two or three females distributes the male's attention and improves female survival during breeding periods.

Because adult fish are short-lived, the keeper's primary goal is maintaining a continuous supply of embryonated eggs at various diapause stages, ensuring that successive batches can be wetted through the year. Detailed records of spawning and wetting dates are essential. The species is not common in the trade and is largely circulated within specialist killifish societies; obtaining quality stock often requires contact with regional or national killifish associations and attendance at fish auctions or swaps.

Conservation

Simpsonichthys suzarti has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE) as of 2025. This absence of formal assessment does not indicate security — it reflects the chronic under-resourcing of freshwater invertebrate and fish assessments in Brazil, particularly for small-range endemics in non-Amazonian drainages. The Rio Pardo floodplains of northeastern Brazil lie within the Caatinga biome, one of the most heavily degraded biomes on the continent, facing severe pressure from agricultural expansion, water extraction for irrigation, and deforestation that alters the hydrology of seasonal floodplain systems.

For an annual killifish with a known range confined to a single river drainage, these pressures are acute. The species depends entirely on intact seasonal pool systems: if floodplain inundation is reduced by upstream water abstraction, if pools are drained for agriculture, or if the surrounding vegetation that moderates pool temperatures and contributes organic substrate is cleared, the habitat for adult fish and the substrate conditions needed for egg survival can be simultaneously destroyed. Many Simpsonichthys species with similarly restricted ranges are considered vulnerable to extinction in the absence of formal IUCN designation, and conservation biologists working on Brazilian annual killifishes have flagged the genus as a priority for assessment.

The hobbyist community plays a documented role in ex situ preservation of annual killifishes. Killifish societies maintain captive cultures of many Simpsonichthys species that are rare or absent in formal collections, and the ease of long-term egg storage makes these fish unusually amenable to distributed maintenance across private breeders — a form of insurance that has preserved strains of species whose wild populations have since contracted. Engagement with organised killifish groups remains the most practical route both to obtaining the species and to contributing to its ongoing ex situ presence.
